You are here: Home ? This and That ? A Holiday Birth!

I don?t hae a lot of experience with baby showers. I planned one impromptu small one and that?s it. I never really gave them a ton of thought, which is why I found this article sent to me by Jeni thought provoking.

baby shower

Whether it?s the birth of Jesus, a New Year to look forward to, or just a new holiday to enjoy, this is the time of year when we all think of new beginnings. Nowhere is a new beginning more celebrated than in the tradition of baby showers. Plenty of new mothers are awaiting their own newborns during this season. A holiday theme is a very? fitting and festive one to plan a baby shower around.

From the traditional Santa motif to a more abstract winter inspired one, the possibilities are infinite. It?s important, however, to harmonize the season with the overall baby shower theme. Choosing one visual or topical theme and threading it through all the party supplies, from quality invitations to personalized baby gifts, will help create excitement about the shower. It also helps the party planner set up a structure around which to plan the event.

One topical theme, even a general one like winter itself, can be combined with a baby shower for a unique event. A winter colors blue and silver theme might be a perfect one for a baby boy about to be born. A customizable blue-colored baby shower invitation, like any other winter theme, could be matched with bright blue bulbs and tinsel for decorations.

A traditional red and white Santa theme could include holiday cards with a snowmen or angels. A less traditional but chic red and white theme could be suggested with a decorated crib, holiday baby bunting or specially designed baby shower invitations from? http://www.invitationbox.com/. An air of friendly, low-key holiday party fun might begin with any of these choices.

Once the? baby shower holiday theme is established, the shower planner can pull together corresponding party supplies to fit the mood and season. A menu is usually made of light party finger food fare and party beverages. The expectant mother and her equally expecting friends would probably appreciate non-alcoholic refreshments.

Lastly, the shower planner may want to coordinate with the guest of honor in suggesting preferred baby gifts from her guests. This is done tastefully by collecting a list of items the new parents may especially need and then posting this publicly or passing it casually between friends. In that way, everyone can more effectively welcome the most important guest of honor, the baby about to arrive.

NRSC Funneled Money to Missouri GOP That Supported Akin

Updated 11:55 a.m. | In the last days of the 2012 campaign, the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent $760,000 to the Missouri Republican Party, which appears to have used the money to run TV ads for Rep. Todd Akin?s ill-fated Senate campaign.

By not?transferring?the money until the first two days of November, people could only speculate as to the source of the cash infusion until after casting their ballots. Democrats would no doubt have targeted Republicans in other battleground states with ads and statements that the GOP was effectively backing Akin, despite indications to the contrary by the group?s chairman, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

Democrats were quick to pounce on the news Friday morning after a report by the Springfield News-Leader outlining the apparent connection between the $760,000 transfer and an ad buy by the Missouri GOP for practically the same amount in support of Akin.

?It is not only wrong that the NRSC would provide funds to support a dangerous extremist like Todd Akin; it was underhanded and dishonest that they would purposely mislead the public about their actions,? said Matt Canter, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Shortly after securing the Republican nomination, Akin appeared on a St. Louis TV program and made what became?infamous?comments in which he suggested that?pregnancy?does not result from incidents of ?legitimate rape.? That was the first of many issues for Akin.

Akin then issued a statement saying he ?misspoke.?

There may also be questions about why the NRSC considered it a wise investment to put the money in Missouri. Despite public polls showing the race close between Akin and re-elected Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, it was not. McCaskill prevailed, 55 percent to 39 percent. Her internal polls regularly showed her with a double-digit lead, in line with the actual result.?The Missouri Senate race was just one of many with unreliable or misleading polling data.

The NRSC declined to comment.

Govt approves setting of Indira Gandhi Centre for Sustainable Development at Oxford's Somerville college

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (Indir? Priyadar?in? G?ndh? , n?e Nehru; 19 November 1917 ? 31 October 1984) was an Indian politician who served as the third Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms (1966?77) and a fourth term (1980?84). Gandhi was the second female head of government in the world after Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka, and she remains as the world's second longest serving female Prime Minister as of 2012. She was the first woman to become prime minister in India.

Gandhi was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India. She adhered to the quasi-socialist policies of industrial development that had been begun by her father. Gandhi established closer relations with the Soviet Union, depending on that nation for support in India?s long-standing conflict with Pakistan. She was also the only Indian Prime Minister to have declared state of emergency in order to 'rule by decree' and the only Indian Prime Minister to have been imprisoned after holding that office. She was assassinated by her bodyguards in retaliation for ordering Operation Blue Star.

Early life and career

Indira Nehru was born on 19 November 1917 at the Anand Bhavan in the historically important town of Allahabad, in what was then the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, into the politically influential Nehru family. Indira Gandhi's father was Jawaharlal Nehru and her mother was Kamla Nehru. Her grandfather, Motilal Nehru, was a prominent Indian nationalist leader. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a pivotal figure in the independence movement of India.

Nehru did her pre-schooling at the Modern school in Delhi. She attended primary school in a variety of institutions in India and Europe, including Ecole Internationale in Geneva, Ecole Nouvelle in Bex, St Cecilia's and St Mary's convent schools (both in Allahabad), before graduating from the Pupils' Own School in Poona and Bombay. In 1936, Nehru enrolled at Somerville College, Oxford, University of Oxford in United Kingdom. While preparing for the entrance exam, she suffered a personal tragedy after her mother died from a prolonged battle with tuberculosis in Switzerland. This left her emotionally devastated: she subsequently failed the exam. Despite the setbacks, Gandhi chose to continue studying in England and spent a few months at the Badminton School in Bristol before clearing the Oxford entrance exam in 1937.

During her time in Europe, Nehru was plagued with ill-health and was constantly attended by doctors. She had to make repeated trips to Switzerland to recover, disrupting her studies. She was being treated by the famed Swiss doctor Auguste Rollier in 1940, when the Nazi armies rapidly conquered Europe. Nehru tried to return to England through Portugal but was left stranded for nearly two months. She managed to enter England in early 1941, and from there returned to India without completing her studies at Oxford. She had excelled in history, political science and economics but struggled with her Latin, failing in the subject several times. The Oxford university later conferred on her an honorary degree. In 2010, Oxford further honoured Gandhi by selecting her as one of the ten Oxasians, illustrious Asian graduates from the University of Oxford.

During her stay in the UK, Nehru frequently met her future husband Feroze Gandhi, whom she knew from Allahabad, and who was studying at the London School of Economics. The marriage took place in Allahabad according to Adi Dharm rituals though Feroze belonged to a Parsi family of Gujarat.

In the 1950s, Nehru served her father unofficially as a personal assistant during his tenure as the first Prime Minister of India. After her father's death in 1964 she was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha (upper house) and became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

Then Congress Party President K. Kamaraj was instrumental in making Indira Gandhi the Prime Minister after the sudden demise of Shastri. Nehru soon showed an ability to win elections and outmanoeuvre opponents. She introduced more left-wing economic policies and promoted agricultural productivity. She led India as Prime Minister during the decisive victory of East Pakistan over Pakistan in the 1971 war and creation of an independent Bangladesh. She imposed a state of emergency in 1975. Congress Party and Indira Gandhi herself lost the next general election for the first time in 1977. Indira Gandhi led the Congress back to victory in 1980 elections and Gandhi resumed the office of the Prime Minister. In June 1984, under Gandhi's order, the Indian army forcefully entered the Golden Temple, the most sacred Sikh Gurdwara, to remove armed insurgents present inside the temple. She was killed on 31 October 1984 in retaliation for this operation by her bodyguards.

Legislative career

When Indira became Prime Minister in 1966, the Congress was split in two factions, the socialists led by Gandhi, and the conservatives led by Morarji Desai. Rammanohar Lohia called her Gungi Gudiya, which means 'Dumb Doll'. The internal problems showed in the 1967 election where the Congress lost nearly 60 seats winning 297 seats in the 545-seat Lok Sabha. She had to accommodate Desai as Deputy Prime Minister of India and Minister of Finance. In 1969, after many disagreements with Desai, the Indian National Congress split. She ruled with support from Socialist and Communist Parties for the next two years. In the same year, in July 1969 she nationalised banks.

War with Pakistan in 1971

The Pakistan army conducted atrocities against the civilian populations of East Pakistan. An estimated 10 million refugees fled to India, causing financial hardship and instability in the country. The United States under Richard Nixon supported Pakistan, and mooted a UN resolution warning India against going to war. Nixon apparently disliked Gandhi personally, referring to her as a "witch" and "clever fox" in his private communication with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (now released by the State Department). Gandhi signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, resulting in political support and a Soviet veto at the UN.

Foreign policy

Gandhi invited the Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Shimla for a week-long summit. The two national leaders eventually signed the Shimla Agreement, which bound the two countries to resolve the Kashmir dispute by negotiations and peaceful means. Due to her antipathy for Nixon, relations with the United States grew distant, while relations with the Soviet Union grew closer.

Congress was criticised by some for not making the Line of Control (LoC) a permanent border while a few critics even believed that Pakistan-administered Kashmir should have been extracted from Pakistan, whose 93,000 prisoners of war were under Indian control. But the agreement did remove immediate United Nations and third party interference, and greatly reduced the likelihood of Pakistan launching a major attack in the near future. By not demanding total capitulation on a sensitive issue from Bhutto, she had allowed Pakistan to stabilise and normalise. Trade relations were also normalised, though much contact remained frozen (sealed) for years.

Nuclear weapons program

Gandhi contributed and further carried out the vision of Jawarharalal Nehru, former Premier of India to develop the program. Gandhi authorised the development of nuclear weapons in 1967, in response to the Test No. 6 by People's Republic of China. Gandhi saw this test as Chinese nuclear intimidation, therefore, Gandhi promoted the views of Nehru to establish India's stability and security interests as independent from those of the nuclear superpowers.

The program became fully mature in 1974, when Dr. Raja Ramanna reported to Gandhi that India had the ability to test its first nuclear weapon. Gandhi gave verbal authorisation of this test, and preparations were made in a long-constructed army base, the Indian Army Pokhran Test Range. In 1974, India successfully conducted an underground nuclear test, unofficially code named as "Smiling Buddha", near the desert village of Pokhran in Rajasthan. As the world was quiet by this test, a vehement protest came forward from Pakistan. Great ire was raised in Pakistan, Pakistan's Prime minister Zulfi Ali Bhutto described this test as "Indian hegemony" to intimidate Pakistan. Gandhi directed a letter to Bhutto and, later to the world, describing the test for peaceful purposes and India's commitment to develop its programme for industrial and scientific use.

Green Revolution

Special agricultural innovation programs and extra government support launched in the 1960s finally transformed India's chronic food shortages into surplus production of wheat, rice, cotton and milk, the success mainly attributed to the hard working majority Sikh farmers of Punjab. Rather than relying on food aid from the United States ? headed by a President Gandhi disliked considerably (the feeling was mutual: to Nixon, Gandhi was "the old witch"), the country became a food exporter. That achievement, along with the diversification of its commercial crop production, has become known as the "Green Revolution". At the same time, the White Revolution was an expansion in milk production which helped to combat malnutrition, especially amidst young children. 'Food Security', as the program was called, was another source of support for Gandhi in the years leading up to 1975. Established in the early 1960s, the Green Revolution was the unofficial name given to the Intense Agricultural District Program (IADP) which sought to insure abundant, inexpensive grain for urban dwellers upon whose support Gandhi?as indeed all Indian politicians?heavily depended. The program was based on four premises: 1) New varieties of seed(s), 2) Acceptance of the necessity of the chemicalization of Indian agriculture, i.e. fertilizers, pesticides, weed killers, etc., 3) A commitment to national and international cooperative research to develop new and improved existing seed varieties, and 4) The concept of developing a scientific, agricultural institutions in the form of land grant colleges.

Bank nationalizations

In 1969, fourteen major banks were nationalized as a means of encouraging economic development and widening access to banking facilities. Banks were given targets for lending in priority areas (like agriculture) and were directed to offer banking services to poorer members of Indian society who had been neglected by the private banks. Under the nationalization drive, the number of bank branches rose from 8,200 to over 62,000, most of which were opened in the unbanked, rural areas. The nationalization drive not only helped to increase household savings, but it also provided considerable investments in the informal sector, in small and medium-sized enterprises, and in agriculture, and contributed significantly to regional development and to the expansion of India?s industrial and agricultural base.

1971 election victory and second term

The government faced major problems after her tremendous mandate of 1971. The internal structure of the Congress Party had withered following its numerous splits, leaving it entirely dependent on her leadership for its election fortunes. Garibi Hatao (Eradicate Poverty) was the theme for Gandhi's 1971 bid. The slogan and the proposed anti-poverty programs that came with it were designed to give Gandhi an independent national support, based on rural and urban poor. This would allow her to bypass the dominant rural castes both in and of state and local government; likewise the urban commercial class. And, for their part, the previously voiceless poor would at last gain both political worth and political weight.

The programs created through Garibi Hatao, though carried out locally, were funded, developed, supervised, and staffed by New Delhi and the Indian National Congress party. "These programs also provided the central political leadership with new and vast patronage resources to be disbursed... throughout the country." Scholars and historians now agree as to the extent of the failure of Garibi Hatao in alleviating poverty ? only about 4% of all funds allocated for economic development went to the three main anti-poverty programs, and precious few of these ever reached the 'poorest of the poor' ? and the empty sloganeering of the program was mainly used instead to engender populist support for Gandhi's re-election.

Verdict on electoral malpractice

On 12 June 1975 the High Court of Allahabad declared Indira Gandhi's election to the Lok Sabha void on grounds of electoral malpractice. In an election petition filed by Raj Narain (who later on defeated her in 1977 parliamentary election from Rae Bareily), he had alleged several major as well as minor instances of using government resources for campaigning. The court thus ordered her to be removed from her seat in Parliament and banned from running in elections for six years. The Prime Minister must be a member of either the Lok Sabha (Lower house in the Parliament of India) or the Rajya Sabha (the Higher house of the Parliament). Thus, this decision effectively removed her from office. Mrs Gandhi had asked one of India's best legal minds and also one of her colleagues in government, Mr Ashoke Kumar Sen to defend her in court. It has been written that Mrs Gandhi was told she would only win if Mr Sen appeared for her.

But Gandhi rejected calls to resign and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. The verdict was delivered by Mr Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha at Allahabad High Court. It came almost four years after the case was brought by Raj Narain, the premier's defeated opponent in the 1971 parliamentary election. Gandhi, who gave evidence in her defence during the trial, was found guilty of dishonest election practices, excessive election expenditure, and of using government machinery and officials for party purposes. The judge rejected more serious charges of bribery against her. Gandhi insisted the conviction did not undermine her position, despite having been unseated from the lower house of parliament, Lok Sabha, by order of the High Court. She said: "There is a lot of talk about our government not being clean, but from our experience the situation was very much worse when [opposition] parties were forming governments". And she dismissed criticism of the way her Congress Party raised election campaign money, saying all parties used the same methods. The prime minister retained the support of her party, which issued a statement backing her. After news of the verdict spread, hundreds of supporters demonstrated outside her house, pledging their loyalty. Indian High Commissioner BK Nehru said Gandhi's conviction would not harm her political career. "Mrs Gandhi has still today overwhelming support in the country," he said. "I believe the prime minister of India will continue in office until the electorate of India decides otherwise".

State of Emergency (1975?1977)

Gandhi moved to restore order by ordering the arrest of most of the opposition participating in the unrest. Her Cabinet and government then recommended that President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declare a state of emergency because of the disorder and lawlessness following the Allahabad High Court decision. Accordingly, Ahmed declared a State of Emergency caused by internal disorder, based on the provisions of Article 352 of the Constitution, on 26 June 1975.

Rule by decree

Within a few months, President's Rule was imposed on the two opposition party ruled states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu thereby bringing the entire country under direct Central rule or by governments led by the ruling Congress party. Police were granted powers to impose curfews and indefinitely detain citizens and all publications were subjected to substantial censorship by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Finally, impending legislative assembly elections were indefinitely postponed, with all opposition-controlled state governments being removed by virtue of the constitutional provision allowing for a dismissal of a state government on recommendation of the state's governor.

Indira Gandhi used the emergency provisions to change conflicting party members.

"Unlike her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who preferred to deal with strong chief ministers in control of their legislative parties and state party organizations, Mrs. Gandhi set out to remove every Congress chief minister who had an independent base and to replace each of them with ministers personally loyal to her...Even so, stability could not be maintained in the states..."

President Ahmed issued a ordinances that did not need to be debated in the Parliament, allowing her to rule by decree.

Elections

In 1977, after extending the state of emergency twice, Indira Gandhi called elections, to give the electorate a chance to vindicate her rule. Gandhi may have grossly misjudged her popularity by reading what the heavily censored press wrote about her. In any case, she was opposed by the Janata Party. Janata, led by her long-time rival, Desai and with Jai Prakash Narayan as its spiritual guide, claimed the elections were the last chance for India to choose between "democracy and dictatorship." Gandhi's Congress party was crushed soundly in the elections which followed. Indira and Sanjay Gandhi both lost their seats, and Congress was cut down to 153 seats (compared with 350 in the previous Lok Sabha), 92 of which were in the south.

Removal, arrest, and return

The Congress Party split during the election campaign of 1977: veteran Gandhi supporters like Jagjivan Ram and her most loyal Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna and Nandini Satpathy, the three were compelled to part ways and form a new political entity CFD (Congress for Democracy) primarily due to intra party politicking and also due to circumstances created by Sanjay Gandhi. The prevailing rumour was that Sanjay had intentions of dislodging Gandhi and the trio stood between that.

A coalition of opposition parties, under the leadership of Morarji Desai, came into power after the State of Emergency was lifted. The coalition parties later merged to form the Janata Party under the guidance of Gandhian leader, Jayaprakash Narayan. The other leaders of the Janata Party Charan Singh, Raj Narain, George Fernandes and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Janata government's Home Minister, Choudhary Charan Singh, ordered the arrest of Indira and Sanjay Gandhi on several charges, none of which would be easy to prove in an Indian court. The arrest meant that Indira Gandhi was automatically expelled from Parliament. These allegations included that she ??had planned or thought of killing all opposition leaders in jail during the Emergency??. However, this strategy backfired disastrously. Her arrest and long-running trial, however, gained her great sympathy from many people. The Janata coalition was only united by its hatred of Gandhi (or "that woman" as some called her). With so little in common, the Morarji Desai government was bogged down by infighting. Desai resigned in June 1979 after Charan Singh and Raj Narain formed their own breakaway party. Charan Singh was appointed Prime Minister, by President Reddy, after Gandhi promised Singh that Congress would support his government from outside.

After a short interval, Congress withdrew support and President Reddy dissolved Parliament in the winter of 1979. In elections held the following January, Congress was returned to power with a landslide majority.

In 1979, when she visited Madurai, some hooligans attacked her. Nedumaran saved her from the attacks.

Operation Blue Star

In the 1977 elections, a coalition led by the Sikh-majority Akali Dal came to power in the northern Indian state of Punjab. In an effort to split the Akali Dal and gain popular support among the Sikhs, Indira Gandhi's Congress helped bring the orthodox religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to prominence in the Punjab politics. Later, Bhindranwale's organisation Damdami Taksal became embroiled in violence with another religious sect called the Sant Nirankari Mission, and he was accused of instigating the murder of the Congress leader Jagat Narain. After being arrested in this matter, Bhindranwale disassociated himself from Congress and joined hands with the Akali Dal. In July 1982, he led the campaign for the implementation of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, which demanded greater autonomy for the Sikh-majority state. Meanwhile, a small section of the Sikhs including some of Bhindranwale's followers, turned to militancy in support of the Khalistan movement, which aimed to create a separate sovereign state for the Sikhs. In 1983, Bhindranwale and his militant followers headquarted themselves in the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, and started accumulating weapons. After several futile negotiations, Indira Gandhi ordered the Indian army to enter the Golden temple in order to subdue Bhindranwale and his followers. In the resulting Operation Blue Star, the shrine was damaged and many civilians were killed. The State of Punjab was closed to international media, its phone and communication lines shut. To this day the events remain controversial with a disputed number of victims; Sikhs seeing the attack as unjustified and Bhindrawale being declared the greatest sikh martyr of the 21st century by Akal Takht (Sikh Political Authority) in 2003.

Assassination

The day before her death Indira Gandhi visited Orissa on 30 October 1984 where she gave her last speech:

"I am alive today, I may not be there tomorrow. I shall continue to serve till my last breath and when I die every drop of my blood will strengthen India and keep a united India alive."thumb|Indira Gandhi's last speech at Bhubaneswar Indira Gandhi delivered her last speech at the then Parade Ground in front of the Secretariat of Orissa. After her death, the Parade Ground was converted to the Indira Gandhi Park which was inaugurated by her son, Rajiv Gandhi.

On 31 October 1984, two of Gandhi's bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, shot her with their service weapons in the garden of the Prime Minister's residence at 1 Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. The shooting occurred as she was walking past a wicket gate guarded by Satwant and Beant. She was to have been interviewed by the British actor Peter Ustinov, who was filming a documentary for Irish television. Beant Singh shot her three times using his side-arm, and Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds. Beant Singh and Satwant Singh dropped their weapons and surrendered. Afterwards they were taken away by other guards into a closed room where Beant Singh was shot dead. Kehar Singh was later arrested for conspiracy in the attack. Both Satwant and Kehar were sentenced to death and hanged in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Indira Gandhi was brought at 9:30 AM to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where doctors operated on her. She was declared dead at 2:20 PM. The post-mortem examination was conducted by a team of doctors headed by Dr. T D Dogra. Dr. Dogra stated that as many as 30 bullet wounds were sustained by Indira Gandhi, from two sources, a Sten gun and a pistol. The assailants had fired 31 bullets at her, of which 30 had hit; 23 had passed through her body while 7 were trapped inside her. Dr. Dogra extracted bullets to establish the identity of the weapons and to correlate each weapon with the bullets recovered by ballistic examination. The bullets were matched with respective weapons at CFSL Delhi. Subsequently Dr. Dogra appeared in the court of Shri Mahesh Chandra as an expert witness (PW-5), and his testimony lasted several sessions. The cross examination was conducted by Shri P N Lekhi, the defence counsel.

Gandhi was cremated on 3 November near Raj Ghat. Her funeral was televised live on domestic and international stations, including the BBC. Following her cremation, millions of Sikhs were displaced and nearly three thousand were killed in anti-Sikh riots. Rajiv Gandhi on a live TV show said of the carnage, "When a big tree falls, the earth shakes."

Family and personal life

Firstly, her younger son Sanjay had been her chosen heir; but after his death in a flying accident in June 1980, his mother persuaded a reluctant elder son Rajiv Gandhi to quit his job as a pilot and enter politics in February 1981. Over a decade later, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated.

Gandhi's yoga guru, Dhirendra Brahmachari, helped her in making certain decisions and also executed certain top level political tasks on her behalf, especially from 1975 to 1977 when Gandhi "dissolved Parliament, declared a state of emergency and suspended civil liberties."

Legacy

Indira Gandhi is associated with fostering a culture of nepotism in Indian politics and in India's institutions.

The Indira Awaas Yojana, a central government low-cost housing programme for the rural poor, is named after her. The international airport at New Delhi is named Indira Gandhi International Airport in her honour. The Indira Gandhi National Open University, the largest university in the world, is also named after her. Indian National Congress established the annual Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration in 1985, given in her memory on her death anniversary. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust also constituted the annual Indira Gandhi Prize.

How to become a Speaker > Ron White ? Job Shadow

World Memory Champion and sought after public speaker Ron White talks about his career. ?You can find Ron at www.ronwhitetraining.com on his Twitter feed in the sidebar of this interview. ?@memorytraining?

What do you do for a living?

I?m a professional speaker.? I speak at conferences and conventions on the topic of how better memory will help you in business.? Things like remembering names and faces, giving speeches without notes, memorizing chapters of books, building relationships with your customers by remembering key (data) about them, that kind of thing.

    What does your work entail?

Well, what the customer sees is they see me walk on a stage and give a 60-minute speech and think that?s the product.? And I think that?s what everybody thinks a speaker does but really that?s the easy part.? The main part is the marketing.

I?ve been doing this 21 years now and for the first ten years I was just beating up the telephone, calling companies saying, ?hey, can I speak to your organization, can I speak for you??? There was a lot of cold calls and selling for years until I built up a name.

Now these days a lot of it is just getting on that stage and speaking but any person or company that wants to grow can?t just stay there.? So I write a lot of blogs and articles and I continue to keep my name out there.

Overall it?s writing blogs, writing articles, it?s creating new products whether it be CD?s for books and then, of course, giving the speeches which is the fun part.

What?s a typical workweek look like?

Well in December a typical workweek looks like me typing up scripts, writing blogs, articles, creating new products, brainstorming, marketing plans, that kind of stuff because there?s not many speeches in December.? A month like September, October, jam-packed; that looks like me getting on an airplane flying to a speech.

For example, here was how September looked for me.? September the 6th I gave a speech in Indianapolis. ?So on the 5th I flew up there, woke up in Indianapolis on the 6th,?gave my speech and ?came home.? The next week I got on an airplane and I flew to New York.? So I arrived the evening of the 11th and on the 12th I spoke in New York and then on the 13th I got on a plane and I headed to Rome, Italy where I spoke in Italy on the 14th.? Then from Italy I took a train to Germany and I spoke in Germany on the 20th.? From there I got on an airplane and flew home.? I landed at home on Saturday and then Sunday I flew to Arizona for a speech on Monday.? I got back home on Monday night and then Tuesday I left for Europe.? I gave a speech there and then directly from Europe I left and I went to Africa for a week and gave conferences in Africa and then I came back home again.

In a four-week period I was in the USA for three days and I was home one day.? So it just all depends.? December I?m going to be home the whole month and in September I was in the United States for one day.

The positives about being a speaker are that in that four or five week stretch I got to see Italy and Germany and England and Nigeria and Ghana.? That?s the positive, you get to see the world.? The negative is you?re traveling all the time.

How did you get started in this?

Well I was 18 years old and I took a class because I thought it would help me with my memory.? I liked it and I ended up asking the company if I could go to work for them.

It wasn?t something that I pursued it just was a couple of chance introductions and it sounded interesting to me and so I decided to do it.? Nothing I sought after for sure.

What do you like about what you do?

I like to travel, I like to see the world.? I?ve been to probably 40 or 50 countries now.? I get to do something that comes very natural to me and that?s speaking on a stage in front of people and they pay me for it.

Before I had this job I rolled burritos at Taco Bueno. If you can get up on a stage and you are confident and you are fun you can do this.

That?s enjoyable and the field that I?m in, the field of memory, is a fun challenge.? But even if I wasn?t a memory speaker, if I was speaking about sales, leadership, or motivation I could still enjoy the travel to an extent and I?d still enjoy doing something that is a fun way to make a living.? I?m not doing something that?s dull.

What are some things that you dislike about it?

I dislike the travel, that?s what I love about it but it?s also what I hate about it.? That, I think, can be controlled.? Ten years ago I was just broke in Dallas, Fort Worth, Texas and I told myself, you know what, I?m going to be an international speaker, I?m going to travel the world, see the world and get paid to do it and that?s what I did.

It was by design.? Now I?m trying to design it the other way.? I?m trying to reverse it and go back to just sticking around in Texas.? And I?m not saying I regret all the travel I did I?m just at a different stage in my life.? But the traveling does get to you.? That?s probably the biggest drawback.

How do you make money or how are you compensated in this career?

Well there?s a couple of different ways that you can make money as a speaker.? The first way is how I did it for the first ten years.? And that is I spoke for free.?? What I?d do is I?d call local Dallas/Fort Worth companies, car dealerships, real estate offices, mortgage companies and I?d ask them when they had their weekly sales meeting and they?d say Tuesday or Wednesday or whatever and I?d say, ?hey, can I come out for 30 minutes and give you a free presentation on how better memory will improve your sales??

They?d have me out and I?d go speak for free and then at the end sell tickets to a seminar or sell CD?s.? That is a great, great way for a speaker to get their feet wet and start to speaking and making money.? Unfortunately most speakers won?t do it because they don?t see themselves as sales people, they see themselves as speakers.? And that?s why most speakers don?t make it; you are a salesperson.

So that?s the number one way to make a living and I did it for ten years.? As I became a better speaker and became more well-known I was able to start charging for my speeches which, of course, I do now.

I still, depending upon the venue and the speech, will sell CD?s at the end of my speech and sometimes you can go speak at a conference to 500 people and then at the end sell your CD?s or books as well as get paid to speak.? Maybe you?ll get $7000, $10,000 to speak and then you?ll sell your CD?s at the end and sell another $10,000 in CD?s.

Some people who host seminars though have gotten wise to this and they realize, you know what, these speakers need me more than I need them.? There?s a million speakers out there, there?s not many people out there who can put 300 people in a conference room and some of the promoters now say to the speakers, ?not only are we not going to pay you to speak, you can sell your CD?s but we?re going to split the sales 50/50?.? And a lot of the speakers, especially the ones who don?t have a good reputation where they can just charge $10,000 to speak, they?re over a barrel and they have to do it.? There are a lot of events like that around now where you?ll go speak at a conference and the promoter will split your sales with you 50/50.

How much money do you make?

Well, again that all depends on the month.? I charge $10,000 a speech.? I don?t always get that.? I recently gave a speech in London where I spoke for free, Donald Trump was a speaker that spoke after me and I sold $25,000 worth of stuff after I spoke for free.

I?ll tell you this, in 2006 I brought in $250,000 and my income has increased every year since 2006.

Essentially I?ll charge $10,000 per speech, some will pay it and some will say that we can?t pay you the full $10,000.? To which I?ll say well how about $7500 but you let me sell CD?s?

    It?s a good income opportunity.

How much money did you make starting out?

Oh, it was awful.? I was 18 years old and my first year I made $7000.? I?ll say that again, $7000.? That was my gross income for that year but keep in mind I was 18.? I had no discipline really, I was working three days a week and I was going to college two days a week I saw it more as a part-time job.

With that said, even when I did get serious about it I think for the first seven or eight years I probably never made more than $30,000. $25,000 to $30,000 the first seven years I did this.

What education or skills are required or needed to do this career?

I have no college degree.? Before I had this job I rolled burritos at Taco Bueno.? If you can get up on a stage and you are confident and you are fun you can do this.? But that?s something that people really overlook. They think, I?ve got so much knowledge, so much value to share I?m going to be a speaker.? Well you have to be fun, and this is why I speak so much, my speech is fun.? I?m up there telling jokes, they?re laughing, I say 50% entertainment is in jokes and 50% education and I get more speaking jobs than the people who give 90% education because here?s the sad truth, people want to be entertained more than they want to be educated.? That?s the truth.? But that doesn?t mean I don?t give tremendous value.

Let me go back to your question.? A college education is not required unless you want to go to work for somebody who promotes speakers and they require you to have it but most speakers are self-employed. People are not going to hire you to speak at their conference because you have a degree.? People are going to hire you to speak at their conference if you hold their attention, if you?re fun, and if you give value. And because of that you just you need become an expert on whatever topic you speak about.? If you speak to a leadership or sales or team building or whatever it is, solidify yourself as an expert in that field.? You don?t need certificates or degrees to be an expert you just simply need to know your stuff.

One of the easiest ways to position yourself as an expert is to start writing blogs and to start writing books even if it?s just eBooks.? When I walk into a prospective customer instead of handing them a business card I say, ?hey, here?s my book consider me for your conference?.? They look at my book and know I must be an authority on what I speak about.

So things like that are more valuable than degrees.

What would you say is most challenging about what you do?

Getting the business, getting the speeches.? That?s without question. ?There?s something called the NSA, it?s the National Speakers Association.? The NSA is full of people who are dynamic speakers but they just aren?t good marketers.? The hardest part about this business is being a good marketer, being able to get the speeches.? So you?ve got to learn how to build an email list, how to make cold calls, how to advertise, how to market.? That?s the hardest part of it.

What would you say is most rewarding?

Helping people and educating people, seeing the light bulbs go off in their head is great.? It?s also great to be able to make an income where you can help out your friends and your family if they need help and that?s an awesome feeling.

What advise would you offer to someone considering this career?

I?d say just do it!? Just dive in and start speaking.? I remember I was 27 years old and I was talking to somebody who was in their early 60?s and she said, I want to finish my master?s degree in two years and by the time I?m 65 I want to be out there speaking.? And I looked at her and I said, you know what, I?m 27 and I apologize but I?ve got to go right now because I?ve got a speech in the morning and I don?t have a degree.

And she just looked at me dumbfounded.? It shook her paradigm.? She needed to get a degree, she needed to do this and this and then she was going to be speaking within three years and I was 27 without a degree and I had a speech the next morning.

My advice would be to start writing articles, start writing blogs, start writing eBooks on your topic that you want to speak as to (list) yourself as an expert and then if it?s something that applies to businesses call your local businesses, your car dealerships, your real estate officers, your mortgage companies, your stock brokers and say, hey, do you have a staff meeting or a sales meeting once a week?? Can I come in there for free and give a free 30-minute workshop?

A lot of them are going to tell you, yeah, come on in.? Then my next suggestion is have something to sell at the end even if it?s just a $20, $30, $40 CD/book or package.

But get your feet wet and get started tomorrow.? Write articles, write blogs, put content out there and then at the very least start speaking for free in your local area.

How much time do you take off?

It?s hard to say.? For example, this week is the week of the World Series.? In June, July, August I was getting speaking requests for this week and next week.? I declined all speaking requests.? I was turning down speeches that were going to pay me $7000, $8000 and $9000 but I was declining all of them because this is the week of the World Series and there was a chance the Texas Rangers might be in the World Series.

So I not only chose this week as a week off I lost maybe $10,000 or $15,000 because of my belief in the Rangers. I remember in 2011 I basically did nothing except speak.

A speaker could take off three or four months of the year if they wanted.

What is a common misconception that people have about what you do?

I think a common misconception is that if you?re a good speaker the speeches will just come.

That if you have a good product and you?re a good speaker well then you?re going to be busy.? That?s not the truth.? It?s more important to be a good marketer and a good salesperson.? Marketing and selling is more important than being a good speaker.? If you?re not a marketer or you?re not a salesperson you will fail unless you have a partner or somebody who can do the marketing and sales for you.? But if you?re just a great charismatic speaker you?re going to fail this business without marketing and sales.

What are your goals and dreams for the future?

I want to travel less.? I want to sell more CD?s and DVD?s and books online.? I?d love to walk by my CD?s and books at stores like Barnes & Nobles and stuff like that.? That?s my biggest goal and dream for the future, clear up more of my time where I can still travel but when I do it?s on my terms and for fun.

What else would you like people to know about what you do?

It?s very rewarding and you can get paid well.? I?ve been lucky enough to be able to charge $10,000 for about a year now.? You?ve got to put in a lot of work and write blogs and articles and content and putting it out there.? Also being honest will pay dividends in your career.? For example, somebody recently called me, they booked me for a speech and I charged them, I think, $7000 to speak and then two weeks later I was talking to somebody who booked speeches for me and I said, yeah, I just got back from Denver, I spoke to this XYZ company and they said, you?re kidding?? I called XYZ Company and tried to get you there and they said no!

Basically what happens was they hung up the phone with that speaker?s agent, they Googled me, contacted me directly and got a lower fee.? And when I found that out I went home, wrote a check for 25% and took it over to the agent and paid them.? I didn?t have to do that.? The agent was so appreciative and it was just honest and it builds that relationship and that?s going to go a long way in this business.

    Pre-Wedding Jitters: Top 9 Causes

    By Ashley Seeger for YourTango.com

Are you feeling anxious about your upcoming wedding? Sick to your stomach? Having bad dreams? Does the sight of the dress fill you with dread? Feeling like you may have made a mistake saying "yes" or proposing?

If you answered yes, you are experiencing pre-wedding jitters. This is your subconscious telling you that something is not right and you need to listen to it. It may be that you are nervous about your own ability to be a husband or wife, anxious that your fianc? can't be the spouse you need or both.

Having wedding jitters does not mean that the marriage is doomed or that it is time to call off the wedding. But all jitters mean that an intervention is needed. Something is making you anxious and you need to understand what it is.
We all have an internal compass that guides us in our life and when we go against it, there is a reaction. At first, you feel a gentle tugging at the back of your brain; something does not feel right. You feel "off." If you pay attention to this feeling, the cause or causes will slowly become clear. But if you don't pay attention, your subconscious will get louder and louder and the bad feelings begin to turn to physical symptoms ? you may have bad dreams, difficulty sleeping, stomach issues, illness or even injuries.

I have worked with many brides and grooms who have had jitters and some that have had physical symptoms of anxiety and stress about their upcoming nuptials. The work is focused on finding the cause of their "jitters" so they can clearly see what action is needed.

I have outlined my own list of the main causes for wedding jitters. I hope it will help you to begin to understand where your anxiety comes from so that you can begin to take action and have the wedding and marriage you want.

    1. The wedding day. Sometimes it is the wedding day itself that is the cause of anxiety. Having one's entire family together for a day or weekend can cause a great deal of anxiety especially when there are divorces, step-parents, estranged family members or just one particularly difficult family member. For other brides or grooms, wedding-day stress is about being in the spotlight.

One bride I know, who was anxious about being the center of attention, decided to get rid of the aisle at her wedding. She and her fianc? walked together into the middle of the cocktail reception and said their vows surrounded by friends and family. Your wedding does not have to be conventional -- you can set it up so that it works for you.

In all instances, I believe that getting support for your wedding day is essential. A counselor or wedding planner can help you create a plan for dealing with difficult family members and organize your day so that you feel safe and connected with your spouse.

    2. Becoming a "wife" or "husband." Our parents' marriage is our blueprint for our own marriage. We learn from them how to argue, how to ask for our needs and how to negotiate power in an intimate relationship. Some of us did not get an ideal blueprint to follow; we come from broken homes, homes filled with anger, violence, shame or neglect or homes where there is little or no emotional intimacy.

Sometimes, when we become engaged, the fear that we will become just like our mom or dad is overwhelming. It is important to remember that you do not have to mirror your blueprint. You can choose any type of relationship you want. But, if you do not actively choose a different way of connecting or expressing anger, you will go on autopilot and fall back on familiar behaviors.

If this sounds like what you are feeling then what you need is to gain an understanding of your past so you can clearly define your future. Get support around understanding your own blueprint so you can then decide what you want to keep and what pieces of your parents' marriage you want to get rid of. Once you have this, you and your fianc? can openly discuss your plan, goals and dreams for the marriage.

    3. What is the plan? Have you talked through the BIG items with your intended? A few of these big items include: do we want kids and when; where do we want to live; how much money do we plan to make; how will we budget; how much time will we spend with our extended families; who is staying home with the kids; how ambitious are we individually and how are we going to make room in the relationship for this ambition.

When you talk through all of these questions, a picture or plan for your marriage emerges. Many couples don't discuss their overall plan before they get married because they either don't know how to or because they already know there is a conflict and they don't know how to find a resolution.

If you have not discussed the big questions with your fianc? this may be a source of your wedding jitters. There can be the illusion that these conflicts will all "work themselves out." I will tell you from personal as well as professional experience that they don't. But I do know that your anxiety will be greatly relieved by beginning this conversation. Consider finding a workbook or a couples counselor who can guide you through this discussion, help you set goals for yourselves and teach you the communication skills you need to negotiate when your desires or needs differ.

    4. Violence or the threat of violence. Violence is never OK. It is never, ever, ever, ever OK. If there has been violence, threats of violence or shaming or controlling behavior in your relationship, you need to seek the support of a therapist to better understand the dynamics of the abuse and why you choose to stay.

If you are questioning the relationship because there has been abusive behavior in the past, please listen to your instincts. Slow things down and find some support. Abuse rarely only occurs once. It is a pattern of behavior that cycles through wonderful times and then abusive or controlling times. It will happen again unless there is an intervention.

    5. Addiction. Addiction is not just about alcohol or drugs. We can become addicted to food, shopping, sex, pornography and even to a relationship. Addictions wreak havoc in a relationship, especially with trust. In some ways, the addiction becomes a third person in the relationship.

If your partner has an addiction, there is also the possibility that you feel like you are what holds this person together. Without you, you feel they would fall apart or perhaps become depressed or suicidal which may leave you feeling trapped. This is a very difficult way to begin a marriage.

If you are having doubts about getting married because there is an addiction or addictive behavior, then information is your most important intervention. AA and Smart Recovery are two wonderful organizations that provide information, literature, meetings and support groups. You will begin to understand what an addiction is, how to live with an addiction and how to be in a healthy relationship with an addict.

Many people who struggle with addictions are in rewarding, supportive and wonderful marriages. It does not mean that your relationship is doomed but it does mean that your relationship will have unique challenges. You need to be able to make an informed decision about the relationship. A psychotherapist or counselor who specializes in addiction is another great place to get information and support.

    6. Difficult family relationships. When you get married you are creating a new family. In order for there to be room for this new family, you must first separate from your family of origin (your parents). This sounds easy as I type it but I have seen many couples where this step gets messy. Family dynamics and politics are complicated and unique.

If you are having doubts about your relationship because of messy, complicated family dynamics you need to make sure that you and your fianc? have strong communication skills. You cannot change anyone else's behavior, expectations or feelings but you can make sure that you and your spouse are a team. You need to be unified in your expectations, boundaries and message to others. A couples counselor is the best place to learn these skills and to come up with a plan of action to cope with the wedding day and every day after.

Problems will arise if your partner is not willing or able to do this very important step of individuating and creating a new family. It can be very lonely in a marriage where you don't feel that you are a central player; resentment and anger can build up quickly. Consider individual counseling so you can learn how to best ask for your needs from your partner and then couples counseling to help you both understand the need for boundaries and how to create them for yourselves.

    7. Cheating. Is there a history of cheating in your relationship? It is devastating to have your trust betrayed and forgiveness and healing each take a long time. But trust can be rebuilt and relationships can be stronger after a betrayal. It makes sense for there to be anxiety about entering into a commitment when there has been an affair. The fear is that "once a cheater, always a cheater."

I don't believe this sentiment. But I do believe that you both need to understand what caused the opening in your relationship for this third person; was it something in your dynamic together or was it something solely within the person who cheated? A psychotherapist or couples counselor can help greatly with this process.

    8. Sex. Sex is a complicated topic. It is central to an intimate relationship but it can feel almost impossible to talk about. Sex becomes an issue in a relationship when it is either too intense or there is no intensity at all. For some, it can be overwhelming to look at their current sex life and think that it might remain the same for the rest of their lives. Without open lines of communication and the skills to devise a plan, you begin to doubt whether you can stay committed forever.

Again, communication and knowledge that are the keys to alleviating this stress. You need to know what "married sex" is and how it differs from "new couple" sex. Don't walk away until you can learn and discover more about your own and your partner's sensuality. A couples counselor or sex therapist is a good place to begin. I also recommend the "Better Sex Video Series -- Sexplorations" by the Sinclair Institute to almost every couple I work with as a teaching tool about how to talk about sex.

    9. Illness. It can be terrifying when you find out that someone you love dearly has an illness. You may be flooded with so many difficult questions: How long will we have? How bad will it get? Will I have to be the caretaker and if so what happens to my needs, dreams and desires? Will my children inherit this illness?

If you or your fianc? has an illness and you are questioning if the relationship can work, you need more information. A joint visit to the doctor's office can give you both a chance to ask questions and gather important information. Then a visit with a couples counselor can help you both fully express your fears and feelings and help you to listen empathically to the the other's feelings.

We all want to know how our stories will end and we want to know now. We want to know before the wedding if our marriage will last 50+ years. It is very scary to make any decision about the rest of our lives when we don't feel we have all the answers. And when we feel jittery or anxious about a big decision we usually ask family members for reassurance. We ask if these feeling are "normal" and if they had these before they married. They will usually tell us this is all normal, to go ahead with the wedding and reassure us that everything will be OK. This rarely gets rid of wedding jitters.

The very best thing that you can do to alleviate the jitters is to get more information and open the lines of communication with your fianc?. Beginning this conversation may not remove all the jitters but solutions and paths forward will emerge. Also, consider using a couples counselor or individual psychotherapist to help. The best outcome would be that you gain:

    • The vision to know your needs.
    • The ability to ask for your needs bluntly.
    • The skills to express your feelings openly and be heard without judgment.
    • The perspective to be able to see the truth of your relationship and not just the fantasy of its potential alone.

With these you will be able to choose your partner with confidence, plan your wedding with excitement and joy and have the marriage you want and need. If you have any questions please contact me at www.DCCouplesCounseling.com or through my YourTango Experts page.

Liverpool through to Europa League knockout stage

    By DANIELLA MATAR

    updated 4:54 p.m. ET Dec. 6, 2012

Liverpool is through to the knockout stage of the Europa League after exacting winning 1-0 at already eliminated Udinese on Thursday.

Jordan Henderson scored midway through the first half to help avenge the 3-2 loss to the Italian side at Anfield in October.

When Young Boys of Switzerland beat already-qualified Anzhi Makhachkala of RussIa 3-1, Liverpool won Group A. All three teams finished with 10 points, but Liverpool had the best head-to-head record, followed by Anzhi.

Stuttgart also advanced despite an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at home to Molde. It was runner-up to Group E winner Steaua Bucharest after the Romanian side drew 1-1 at Copenhagen. Stuttgart edged Copenhagen on head-to-head.

Udinese had a couple of decent chances before Liverpool took the lead in the 23rd minute with its first real opportunity. Luis Suarez headed on a corner and Suso passed it back for Henderson to rifle in through a crowd.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Daniele Padelli pulled off several fantastic saves - denying Henderson and Suarez - to keep qualification still in question for Liverpool, which knew it had to at least match Young Boys' result.

Udinese's Giovanni Pasquale was sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

It almost went badly wrong for Liverpool in stoppage time as Antonio Di Natale sent a shot skimming over the crossbar with the last kick of the game.

In Switzerland, Gonzalo Zarate gave Young Boys the lead in the 38th when his initial shot ricocheted around the area and back to him to slot home from a tight angle.

Anzhi Makhachkala leveled in first-half stoppage time with a controversial equalizer. Young Boys called loudly for offside but Odil Ahmedov appeared to be level as he received the ball, turned and fired in.

Moreno Costanzo doubled Young Boys' lead eight minutes after the break after Anzhi failed to deal with a cross.

Anzhi striker Lacina Traore was sent off 20 minutes from time for a second bookable offence before Alexander Gonzalez added a third for the home side in stoppage time.

In the tight Group E, Steaua only needed a point to advance and was reduced to 10 men at the start of the second half when Cristian Tanase was sent off for a second yellow card.

Raul Rusescu gave it the lead with a stunning shot from outside the area which took a slight deflection as it curled into the right side of the goal.

Copenhagen leveled three minutes from time through Igor Vetokele, but it was too little too late.

At Stuttgart, Davy Claude Angan ran from inside his own half to score the only goal in first-half stoppage time for Norway's Molde.

Only two other berths were open to make the last 32. In the late games, Tottenham and Panathinaikos played for a spot in Group J, and FC Basel and Videoton fought for the last spot in Group G.

Elsewhere, competition top-scorer Edinson Cavani scored his seventh in Napoli's 3-2 loss at home to PSV Eindhoven. Tim Matavz netted a hat trick to inflict Napoli's first home defeat in European competition in 18 years.

Also, defending champion Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 at Plzen.

In other results, it was; Dnipro 4, AIK Solna 1; Hapoel Tel-Aviv 2, Academica 0; Limassol 3, Marseille 0; Fenerbahce 0, Borussia Moenchengladbach 3; Bordeaux 2, Newcastle 0; and Maritimo 2, Club Bruges 1.
