American Cancer Society seeking Road to Recovery volunteer drivers

TOLEDO, OH (PRESS RELEASE) - Everyone knows that with a cancer diagnosis comes with many hardships and barriers for a cancer patient.? One of the greatest barriers to a cancer patient is simply getting to and from cancer appointments and treatments; cancer patients often cannot afford to drive to appointments or are physically unable to drive themselves.? That is why the American Cancer Society needs help.

The American Cancer Society?s Road to Recovery program needs volunteers who are willing to give a few hours of their time to provide free transportation for cancer patients to and from their treatments.?? Volunteers only need to have a reliable vehicle, current driver?s license, proof of auto insurance, and attend a free Road to Recovery training. ?Training for this program is simple, easy, and only requires a couple hours of time.? Volunteer drivers make a big difference in a cancer patient?s life by providing them with access to life saving procedures and treatments.

Anyone interested in volunteering to become a driver should attend the next Road to Recovery Training.? The next training is on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 5:00 ? 7:00 p.m. at the American Cancer Society Northwest Ohio Regional Office in Perrysburg.? There is no fee to attend, but registration is required. To register, call Andrew Mariani at 1-888-227-6446 ex. 5103.? For information about the program, call Andrew Mariani, Health Initiatives Representative for Lucas County, at 1-888-227-6446 extension 5103 or email to andrew.mariani@cancer.org.

U.S. extradites woman suspected of Bosnia war crimes (Reuters)

SARAJEVO (Reuters) ? The United States on Tuesday extradited to Bosnia a Bosnian female ex-soldier suspected of murdering six Croatians in 1993 during a war that ripped the region apart, the prosecutor's office in Sarajevo said.

Rasema Handanovic, a 39-year-old Muslim, was detained upon her arrival in Bosnia.

She is suspected of taking part in the mass murder of Croatian civilians in Bosnia-Herzegovina in April 1993, when she was a member of the Bosnian army special unit known as "Zulfikar," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

More than 100,000 people were killed during the Bosnian war of 1992-95. Muslims and Croatians fought each other in 1993-94 even though they had entered the conflict as allies against the Bosnian Serbs.

"Rasema Handanovic is suspected of personally taking part in executing by firing squad three soldiers of the Croatian Defence Council who had surrendered and three civilians ... in the hamlet of Gaj, (in) the Trusina village," the statement said.

The attack on the Croatian village resulted in the deaths of 18 civilians and four soldiers. Several people were wounded, including two children.

Last week, a U.S. naturalized citizen, Edin Dzeko, was deported to Bosnia over his alleged participation in the crime.

The Bosnian war crimes court is currently trying six members of the "Zulfikar" unit for war crimes in Trusina, including the unit's commander, Zulfikar Alispago.

Handanovic is one of only a few females wanted for war crimes committed during the Bosnian conflict. One suspect, Azra Basic, is being detained in the United States awaiting extradition over war crimes against Serb detainees.

So far, the only woman to have been convicted over Bosnian war crimes is Biljana Plavsic, the former Bosnian Serb president who had been a member of the Bosnian Serb wartime leadership.

The Hague-based war crimes tribunal sentenced Plavsic to 11 years in jail in 2003 for persecution of Bosnian Muslims and Croatians and crimes against humanity. She was released after serving two-thirds of her sentence and now lives in Belgrade.

OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- It's not the kind-of secret one would expect from a candidate.? Scott Dudley waited until after he was elected mayor of Oak Harbor to admit he was donating his kidney to a stranger.

"We were?not doing this for votes or any political reason," Dudley said.

His reasons were much more personal: his family has a history of polycystic kidney disease.? It claimed his grandmother's life when Dudley was an infant.? His aunt Myrna also died, despite receiving a kidney from another relative.? His uncle also had the disease and lived a longer life thanks to a donated kidney.?

"I've seen it firsthand," Dudley said.? "I've seen the impact it has had on others' lives."

While attending a Rotary meeting in Canada, he heard from Keesha Rosario, whose 37-year-old husband Philip was battling the same disease and needed of a kidney.

"I took her aside after the meeting and said, 'OK, how do we make this happen?'" Dudley said.

Dudley has made trips to Vancouver for tests to make sure he is a good match.? He has yet to meet Philip Rosario, but the two recently exchanged messages online.?

"He thinks I'm a hero," Dudley said.? "In this case?I'm just in the right place at the right time."

If all goes as planned, the transplant will take place?in Vancouver next?June.? Dudley will miss a?few weeks?at his new job but plans to?do as much work as possible on his laptop and phone.? ?

2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Preview from the Sports Mac

These must be interesting times for the folks who run the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.? In the past, this matchup usually had paired two of the top teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 and it was one of the bowls to watch in between Christmas and New Year?s Day.?

But then a couple of years ago, a lot of the BCS conferences started to shift when their respective teams would end the season and, unfortunately, the Holiday Bowl was one of the bowls that got the short straw.? While they still have teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 participating, the teams are further down each conference?s pecking order.? For this year, the Holiday Bowl features two teams that had up and down seasons.

California certainly got 2011 off to a great start winning their first three games, including a three-point overtime win in their Pac-12 opener on the road at Colorado.? Then the rough patch came and the Golden Bears lost four of their next five with blowout conference losses at Pac-12 champion Oregon, home against USC and at Pac-12 South champion UCLA.? But California was able to right the ship and finish strong, winning three of their last four games with the only loss being on the road at rival Stanford.? That finish allowed the Golden Bears to finish the season with seven wins and participate in the Holiday Bowl for the third time and the first time since 2006.

It?s been a rough couple of years for the University of Texas.? After playing in the 2010 BCS Championship Game, the Longhorns had a big letdown the following season, winning only five games and missing bowl eligibility.?

This season got off to a fine start as they won their first four games.? Then came the Red River Shootout with Oklahoma.? It turned into a nightmare as the Sooners ran all over the Cotton Bowl and destroyed Texas by 38 points.? As the Longhorns were reeling from that loss, red hot Oklahoma State came to Austin and walked out with a 12-point victory.? That set the tone for the second half of the season as Texas was a mediocre 3-3 and capped the regular season by getting blown out again, this time at Baylor.?

Regardless, the Longhorns won seven games and are back in the postseason.? This will be the Longhorns fifth Holiday Bowl and first visit here since 2007.

So, who will win their eighth game of the season and carry momentum into 2012?? Read on for the preview of the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

?

California Offense vs. Texas Defense

California?s offense has been fairly good all season long.? They have been able to move the ball and score points, averaging almost 420 yards and just under 30 points per game this season.? But they did struggle in that bad stretch in the middle of the year mentioned above, when they scored just 38 points in those three defeats.? Zach Maynard is the man under center and he has been fairly effective, accounting for 245 yards of total offense per game, which was 41st nationally.? He has help from RB Isi Sofele, who ran for over 105 yards per game, and WR Keenan Allen, who had 105 receiving yards per game.? They?ll be facing a Texas defense that has been very good all season.? They finished in the top 15 in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense and scoring defense.? They have had bad outings this year, including the regular season finale.? They?ll be looking for redemption and will want to prove that this is one of the better defenses in the country.

Edge: Texas

?

Texas Offense vs. California Defense

The Longhorns have been well balanced all season, but that can be deceiving.? They averaged just over 400 yards per game and while they ran for over 210 yards per game, they were only able to throw for 194 yards per contest, which was only 85th nationally.? David Ash and Case McCoy have both had shots at quarterback and McCoy seems to have become the man to lead the offense and there have been growing pains.? The Longhorns have had a running back by committee this season led by Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron.? Jaxon Shipley is the leading receiver, but he has under five receptions per game.? California?s defense has been fairly good finishing just outside the top 25 in total defense.? But they have had a tendency to give up points, as the Golden Bears have given up more the 30 points seven times this season.? This matchup is too close to call as both units have been OK and nothing more.

Who will win the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl?

Who will win the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl?

  • California

  • Texas

Edge: Even

?

Special Teams

Each team has an area of strength here that they?ll be looking to exploit in San Diego.? For California, they have had one of the stronger kicking games in the nation this year.? P Bryan Anger averaged over 44 yards per kick and K Giorgio Tavecchio finished tied for 11th in FG per game.? For Texas, they finished eighth in the nation in punt returns and 18th in kickoff returns.? Either unit has a chance to make a big impact in what should be a tight contest.

Edge: Even

?

Coaching

Jeff Tedford has California back to his winning ways after a down year in 2010 and he has now guided the Golden Bears to their eighth bowl game in his 10 seasons, winning five of them.? Mack Brown has got Texas back to a winning season after suffering his first losing one in his 13 seasons as the head Longhorn.? He is still 100 games over .500 in Austin and has won two-thirds of the games in his career.

Edge: Texas

?

This and That

Both teams should be motivated as they are back in the postseason after missing out last year.? While California fans have the shorter trip, the Longhorns might have the crowd advantage as Texas fans will show up in droves no matter where the team plays.? Texas might also have motivation because with a good performance here, they could end the season in the final Top 25, something they could not say last season.

Edge: Texas

?

So, What Will Happen in the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl

While California won three of its last four and Texas lost three of its last four, the Longhorns are the better team here this night.? While it won?t be an easy victory, Texas will continue its climb back toward the top of the Big 12 and use this game as a springboard for 2012.

Line: Texas by 3

Texas police: Man in Santa suit killed 6 relatives

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) - Police in a quiet Fort Worth suburb worked Monday to piece together a family history after a man dressed in a Santa Claus suit apparently shot six relatives and himself on Christmas.

Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling said the shooter showed up in the Santa outfit shortly before gunfire erupted and that the family appeared to have been opening Christmas presents. Police responding to a 911 call found four women and three men dead, along with two handguns.

"We think he was just inside there celebrating Christmas with the rest of them and decided for whatever reason that's how he's going to end things," Eberling told The Associated Press.

Investigators worked through Sunday night and into Monday morning, meticulously searching the apartment where the bodies were found, along with vehicles parked outside. Police said they believe the victims were related, though some were visiting and didn't live in the apartment.

Eberling said investigators are piecing together a "family history," but he declined to get into specifics. Autopsies of the shooter and the victims were being done Monday by the Tarrant County medical examiner, but it would probably be Tuesday before their identities were released, he said.

"We're getting a clearer picture, but we're not ready to go on the record with anything until we find out from the medical examiner absolute confirmation of identities and the manner of death," Eberling said.

Roger Metcalf, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office, said the victims have been tentatively identified, but the office couldn't confirm the names because the state driver's license fingerprint database wasn't available on the holiday.

"In addition, we need to locate next of kin before information can be released, and our investigators are working on that as well," Metcalf wrote in an e-mail to the AP.

Late Sunday evening, police intently searched a sport utility vehicle parked outside the apartment. The vehicle is registered to a man who listed his residence as a home two miles away in the neighboring suburb of Colleyville.

Thomas Ehrlich, who lives near the home in Colleyville, told the AP he heard from neighbors that police went to the house Sunday. He said it was his understanding that the man and women who once lived there were estranged.

Records show the couple had financial problems and that their home, most recently valued on the county tax rolls at $336,200, had been sold in 2010 at a foreclosure auction.

Police and firefighters rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex about 11:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call in which no one was on the other end of the line. Because no one responded on the phone, police went into the apartment, located at the back of the complex.

They found the seven, aged 18 to 60, dead.

Many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

The apparent murder-suicide involved the first homicides in Grapevine in more than a year and a half.

PFT: Rodgers' finishing touches on MVP year

Raheem MorrisAP

Raheem Morris? ?Youngry? defense is officially the worst in the league. No group has given up more points.

Tampa has lost nine straight games. They have lost the last four games by an average of 23 points-per-game.

Morris is clearly feeling the heat, and it?s starting to show up in his press conferences. He was asked Monday why he should be retained.

?I will never fire myself,? Morris said via Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times. ?We go out, man, and you don?t go from being a Coach of the Year candidate to being the worst coach in the league to get fired within a year. It?s about us. It?s a little bit of everything.?

My wife happens to be sitting next to me. She doesn?t know a lot of about football, but she read that statement from Morris:

?I?d fire him just for that quote. It?s immature,? she said.

Whether Morris stays or not, he?s going to have to look in the mirror of how he handled his team?s struggles publicly and privately. There has been a lot of excuse-making instead of taking responsibility. His team collapsed when things went wrong, rather than responding to adversity. The Bucs need to examine the underlying reasons for that collapse.

Morris wants to stay the course.

?I believe in my guys. I believe in the system. I believe in the program. I believe in what we do and everybody in this building, so it?s a buying-in factor. Either you buy any or you don?t. And we want to building this thing young and we want to develop a team that goes out and wins ? and wins consistently.?

Bucs ownership has three options. They can fire Morris, bring Morris back as a ?lame duck? coach, or extend Morris? contract.

The young coach has started to publicly make the case for staying by pointing out how young this team is.

?We made a collective agreement to go young when we took over this program,? Morris said. ?That?s something we wanted to do. In order to upgrade in certain positions, sometimes you got to get worse before you get better.?
