Happy Days Are Here Again!

Wicksell argued that there is a ?natural rate of interest,? at which desired savings is balanced by desired investment and the economy suffers from neither inflation nor massive excess capacity. A recession occurs when the natural rate of interest falls below the actual interest rate. Instead of savings being channeled into investment and driving the economy forward, firms and households start merely hoarding and the economy stalls, leaving workers and equipment idle.

Wicksell?s work leaves open the question of why the natural rate of interest might rise or fall, so it doesn?t make for much of a causal theory of recessions. But under normal circumstances central bankers can cure recessions by cutting interest rates to bring them closer to the natural rate. This brings saving and investment back into equilibrium and ensures that resources are put to good use.

Lithium ion batteries currently power everything from laptops to electric cars, and Russia and China are gearing up to dominate the industry by launching the world?s largest Li-ion battery plant. Planned for Novobirsk, Russia, the facility will be a joint venture between Chinese firm Thunder Sky and RUSNANO (a Russian state-run corporation) and it will be able to produce up to 500,000 batteries (of all sizes) per year.

The collaborative facility, named Liotech, will have an area exceeding 40,000 square feet ? making it the largest lithium-ion battery factory in the world. It will be able to?produce big automotive and bus batteries as well as batteries for smaller gadgets and emergency power supplies.

The Russian and Chinese firms have reportedly signed multiple contacts to supply the batteries to countries around the world, and 500 people are set to get new jobs at the plant. RUSNANO Managing Director Sergey Polikarpov told?CleanTechnica: ?The new factory is an outstanding example of the local impact of transferring the foreign high technology. It has led to construction of modern production facilities. When plant capacity has been met, more than 500 individuals will be employed. In realizing a program to replace imports, we are creating an entire cluster of new high-tech production for materials and components related to the batteries and also an engineering center which is an excellent synergy?.

Liotech CEO Alexander Erokhin added, ?Implementation of public electric transport equipped with our lithium-ion batteries will significantly improve the environment in large cities in Russia. Use of the batteries in combination with alternative sources of energy will promote the development of ?green technology? and increase the energy efficiency of the Russian economy. We are already seeing interest in our storage batteries from Russian Railways, the Moscow Metro, electric power networks and power generating companies, businesses in the military industrial complex, the public utilities sector, and telecommunications companies.?

Summit purchase won't happen until 2012 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Summit Entertainment is likely to remain its own company for the rest of the year.

The studio, which had hoped to merge with another company before 2012, has not come to an agreement with potential purchaser, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

According to the Times, Summit had hoped to close a purchase deal before the end of the year in order to take advantage of tax and other financial incentives. But with two days left in the year, that's not going to happen.

Summit is in talks with Lionsgate Entertainment and with Miramax co-owner Colony Capital.

Summit is an attractive acquisition. Its "Twilight" series is extremely profitable and has one more installment to go before it ends.

The Times reports that Lionsgate and Colony each are offering in the neighborhood of $375 million -- plus assumption of about $200 million of debt -- for Summit.

A Summit spokesman was not immediately available for comment Thursday.

NBA Roundup: New Jersey falls hard in final home opener

Marvin Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds and the Atlanta Hawks opened a double-digit lead early and cruised to a 106-70 victory against the sluggish New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night in their final home opener at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Jeff Teague added 13 points, Joe Johnson had 11 and the Hawks got big games off the bench from Zaza Pachulia (13 points and 11 rebounds) and Vladimir Radmanovic (17 points) in finally opening the lockout-delayed season by embarrassing the Nets in a game in which the crowd was booing the Brooklyn-bound team by halftime.

Entering Tuesday, only Atlanta and Utah had not played a game.

Rookie MarShon Brooks had 17 points to lead the cold-shooting Nets, who looked tired coming off a season-opening win Monday in Washington.

The Hawks, who held the Nets to a dismal 31 percent shooting from the field, took command early as Williams hit two 3-pointers in a game-opening 11-2 spurt.

Atlanta led 28-11 at the end of the first quarter with Radmanovic supplying a late spark with nine points.

Atlanta, which has made the playoffs the past four seasons, was not overly impressive.

It shot 44.2 percent from the field and only showed flashes of good basketball.

The best came early in the second half when Williams and Josh Smith combined on a fastbreak in which the ball did not touch the floor and they exchanged four passes before Smith hit a layup.

The Hawks increased their lead to 22 points at halftime on a long 3-pointer by Teague with less than a second to play.

They led by as many as 39 points while resting most of the their starters for the final 18 minutes.

Hawks guard Willie Green played in his 500th game.

The Hawks had lost in their previous two visits to New Jersey.

The Nets, who never led in the game, also gave up early, sitting Deron Williams and Kris Humphries most of the second half.

Deron Williams finished with 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting with six turnovers, while Humphries had 11 points and six rebounds.

The most shocking part of the night was the cheers that Humphries got.

He has been booed early in the preseason because of his embarrassing failed marriage to Kim Kardashian.

He was wildly cheered by the fans at the Prudential Center.

When he played well early, there were even cheers of "We love Humphries!"

Miami will win the 2012 NBA Season

It?s Showtime! After a 149-day lockout when the NBA season was expected to vanish, it?s back. Yes. It?s Christmas ? the most joyous time of the year! What a day to start playing ball. What?s in store for 2012?

?Heat will definitely win the East,? proclaimed Gerald Anthony ?Samsam? Gullas, the team manager of the University of Visayas Green Lancers. ?And, with his improved post game, the runaway choice for MVP is LeBron James.?

For a diehard Kobe Bryant fan, Samsam?s prediction is all-confident. ?LeBron will shine in the biggest stage and earn his first ring against anyone who comes out of the West. He will now be called Mr. Dollar because he has now 4 quarters. Last year, 3 quarters and 75 cents ra. Haha!?

In the Dec. 25 game between the Heat and the reigning champs, Mavericks, Mr. Gullas was proven right: LeBron scored 37 points. In a game that had Miami leading Dallas by 15 after the 1st quarter, 21 at halftime and 35 in the 3rd quarter, Miami won the Christmas contest. (One play ? it?s on YouTube ? was spectacular: LeBron tossing an alley-hoop pass to Dwyane Wade for a slam.)

This NBA season will be electrifying. In a Sean Gregory article entitled, ?Welcome Back, Basketball: Five NBA Stories To Watch,? a league executive, Tony Ronzone, was interviewed. Here are the five stories?

ONE, the shortened 66-game season. Instead of the usual 82 games, every single ballgame is important. ??It reminds me a little of Europe, where every game, you can?t lose,? says Ronzone. ?Lose two games, and getting to the playoffs becomes that much harder.? The schedule also included a multitude of back-to-back games for teams: the Lakers, for example, play four games in the first five days of the season. Weary legs mean more playing time for guys you?ve never heard of.?

TWO: Chris Paul joining Blake Griffin in Los Angeles. In the NBA Finals, it might be Miami vs. LA. But, no, it?s not the Lakers ? but the Clippers. ?Expectations for the morbid franchise are higher than ever,? wrote Sean Gregory. ??Showtime just went from purple and gold? ? the Lakers ? ?to red and white,? says Ronzone.?

THREE, the Heat from Miami. Like Samsam, Mr. Ronzone believes Miami will win. ??They will definitely be better,? says Ronzone. ?It will help that the media attention won?t be on them from day 1, like last year.? In a season with a tiring schedule, the young and hungry will survive. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh are veteran players, but only Wade is pushing 30 (he turns 30 on Jan. 12).?

FOUR: ?Spur of the Moment,? wrote Gregory. We seem to forget that the San Antonio Spurs, beaten in the first round by the 8th seeds, Memphis Grizzlies, finished with the best regular season record in the West, 61-21.

?You get the sense this is the last year for the Spurs to muster something,? says Ronzone. ?They seem to be saying, ?OK, let?s give it all we can.??

Tim Duncan is 35. Manu Ginobili will turn 35 this summer. Will this be their last hurrah? ?A condensed schedule could hurt older teams ? their legs tire out more than others,? wrote Gregory. ?However, the shortened training camp may favor teams with an established chemistry, like San Antonio. And remember: in 1999, the last lockout-shortened season, the Spurs won it all.?

Samsam Gullas comments: ?Whomever wins the West solely depends on how good the Clippers are or how improved the Thunder are.?

FIVE, watch for Ricky Rubio. This Spanish star is the rookie to watch. Only 21, he was the fifth overall pick in 2009. He postponed his jump from Espa?a to Estados Unidos but now he?s with the Minnesota Timberwolves. (His resume includes being the youngest ever to play in the Spanish ACB League ? at 14 years old.)

?He?s the kind of player you?re going to want to watch,? says Ronzone. ?Players want to play with him. He makes guys around him better. He has that soccer mentality, where the assist is just as important as scoring the goal.?

Imagine a soccer-loving Spaniard wearing hi-cut sneakers?

This Christmas, here?s one more reason to celebrate: The NBA is back.

Avastin for ovarian cancer slows tumors but fails to prolong life

Even these modest results energized patient advocates, who point to the lack of new treatments for ovarian cancer, which causes some 15,000 annual deaths in the United States as the eighth most common cancer among women.

?While we are looking for that silver bullet, this is a gift that shouldn?t be overlooked,? said Karen Orloff Kaplan, chief executive of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.

Data on survival are still being collected, but the results are probably too disappointing for the drug?s maker, Genentech, to seek Food and Drug Administration approval of Avastin for ovarian cancer, said company spokeswoman Charlotte Arnold. The company, however, did receive approval this month from European drug authorities to market Avastin for ovarian cancer treatment.

Both of the studies hinted that patients with advanced ovarian cancer may benefit more than patients with earlier stages.

?There are likely to be subsets of patients with very advanced ovarian cancer who will experience a survival benefit as long as they?re being treated with Avastin,? said Robert A. Burger, an oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia who helped lead the second study published Thursday.

But sorting out patients who might benefit from those who won?t is impossible at present. ?We desperately need to figure out a way to predict the folks who are going to respond to the drug versus the folks who will only get side effects of the drug,? said Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. Studies searching for such a test are ongoing.

Some hail small benefits

In a disease in which fewer than half of patients survive their diagnosis for five years, even the small benefit seen in the studies pushed researchers to herald the results as significant. ?We have to consider it as a potential new treatment,? Oza said.

Other experts immediately pushed back on that assertion, saying the absence of a survival benefit disqualifies Avastin as a treatment except in very advanced cases.

?Our practice does not use Avastin in newly diagnosed [ovarian cancer] patients,? said Ursula A. Matulonis, director of gynecologic oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. ?My opinion is not changing.?

The smaller of the two studies published Thursday, dubbed ICON7, followed 1,500 women in 11 countries. All received standard chemotherapy, and half received Avastin for up to 10 months after chemotherapy. In the Avastin patients, the drug halted the growth of their tumors for an extra month and a half.

Upcoming Space Missions for 2012 (ContributorNetwork)

As 2011 draws to a close, the year ahead, 2012, promises to be a year when some greatly anticipated space missions are scheduled to take place. They can be divided into unmanned, commercial, and international.

Unmanned Missions for 2012

The twin NASA GRAIL probes will arrive in lunar orbit on New Year's Day for a three month mission to examine the moon's gravity, as well as its interior and formation. The two satellites will create a map of the moon's variable gravity field by measuring the changes in distance between them due to gravitational variations.

The Dawn spacecraft, currently in orbit around the asteroid Vesta, will complete that phase of its mission in July. It will blast out of orbit and head toward the largest known asteroid, Ceres, where it is due to arrive in Feb 2015.

Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity is scheduled to land on the Martian surface on August 6. The SUV sized Mars rover will touch down with that will use a crane to gentler lower it to the ground after having its descent slowed by retro rockets and a parachute. If it successfully touches down, it will provide the most sophisticated and extensive unmanned examination of Mars yet.

Commercial Missions for 2012

If all goes well, the first cargo version of SpaceX's Dragon will launch on Feb 7 on board a Falcon 9 rocket. A few days later the cargo Dragon will rendezvous with the International Space Station. The crew of the ISS will take hold of the Dragon with a remote manipulator arm and berth it to an airlock. If all is successful, a new era of commercial cargo space missions will have been born, presaging crewed flights scheduled to take place in 2017.

Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo has so far been engaged in glide tests, after having been dropped by its carrier plane, WhiteKnightTwo. It is hoped that powered flights of the SpaceShipTwo will commence sometime in 2012, bringing closer that era of paid passenger space flights to low Earth orbit.

International Space Missions for 2012

While NASA astronauts are compelled to pay for rides on the Russian Soyuz, due to the end of the space shuttle program, the Chinese space program will quicken its pace with two missions to its space station module prototype, the Tiangong-1. These missions will be the Shenzhou 9 and the Shenzhou 10. It is anticipated, pending an analysis of the unmanned mission of the Shenzhou 8, that one or both of these flights will carry a crew. That being the case, the crew of each mission will spend about two weeks docked to the Tiangong-1, according to Space Daily. One of the members of the Shenzhou 10 may well be China's first female astronaut.
