Can a person on the autistic spectrum have relationships?

Michael
It?s entirely possible for autistic people to have relationships, romantic or otherwise. The problem is not emotional, as with some disorders, it?s that they have trouble making the connections socially. If you have significant social problems, then that?s going to make it hard to find friendship or a romantic relationship, but it?s not impossible, and many autistic people are happily married.

SASA
Of course you can, you only just found out right? Don?t let it get to you. I have bi polar, and I?m cool with it. It makes me feel different but I?m not hurting any one and I can have a good relation ship with a man and good friendships.

It?s mind over meter, pretend the doctor said you were fine and get on with your life. Take the medication if it was given to you, but just think of them as vitamins. Have you had a relation ship before? If yes, then don?t think twice about your future with friends and girlfriends. Someone out there will see you as perfect, and every one has issues, some stronger then others.

Yes, people with Aspergers have relationships all the time.
The world is at your feet.

There is no reason you can?t have a meaningful relationship. You may have to adjust your social skills a bit but that?s doable. You will have to date a variety of girls to find the one who will be right for you but that?s true for all of us. The short temper may be your biggest handicap here. You will need to control it as that can destroy a relationship quickly.
So, try to date and see what happens. Good luck,

Alionara Nolastname
ok first of all YES you can have relationships.. everyone is messed up a little bit these days so dont worry too much.. the key is atleast you KNOW your problems and can work on them.

Heidi
Many people are on the autistic spectrum and don?t even realise it ? they live normal lives. Don?t let a label lower your expectations for life. Nobody is the perfect friend or partner ? we all have to work at our relationships. The fact that you have taken the trouble to write such a well thought-out question poves that you can communicate with people and so you have the most essential relationship skill. Many people are still single in their mid-30?s ? don?t rule anything out yet ? well, don?t ever rule it out.

nmnf_43
I?m 21 with Aspergers and I?ve held down a good serious relationship. Autism isn?t a dead end, just an obstacle. We?re delayed at social/communication skills as we grow up, but we can catch on by working with the right resources.

Newly diagnosed diabetic ? am I type 1 or 2? | Health and Fitness ...

Question by Peener: Newly diagnosed diabetic ? am I type 1 or 2?
I am a 26 year old male and have lost about 20 pounds in the past six months (am now at about 175). My fasting BG was 340 mg/dl, A1C was 10.9%, and high ketones in my urine. I was told by a walk-in clinic internist I was type 2 and started on Metformin (1000 mg twice a day), only ate greens, egg whites, and turkey, and exercised for about 15-20 minutes after each meal. My fasting BG was down to about 95 and postprandial under 150 after 4 days. I saw a new internist who confirmed the type 2 diagnosis and treatment, but gave no advice on diet, except for fat intake.

Five days after the initial diagnosis and start of treatment, I was able to see an endocrinologist who told me I was type 1 due to lack of family history (with the exception of a grandmother who developed diabetes in her sixties after becoming very overweight), age, body type, and ketone levels.

As far as I understand, there is no definitive test to determine if someone is type 1 or 2. The type 1 antibodies are not necessarily present in all type 1 patients, and the c-peptide test is not always reliable.

Additionally, the endocrinologist I saw prescribed 16 units per day of Lantus and a sliding scale of Novolog before each meal starting at 5 units, and going much higher depending on my preprandial BG. I have decreased the Lantus dosage to 14 units due to low fasting BG levels and am now eating 2-4 servings of carbohydrate per day. I have yet to take one unit of Novolog since my fasting and postprandial BG levels have been in the 70-105 and 95-130 range, respectively. Given the ?500 Rule? (500/16), I should only need 1 unit to cover 31 G of carbohydrate assuming I produce no insulin at all, which the endocrinologist did not believe to be the case. Would that 5+ units have put me into a dangerously severe hypoglycemic state? Should I look for a new doctor, or are my fears unfounded?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Let me expand a bit on the weight issue. I had lost the 20 lbs before being diagnosed, which is one of the factors the endocrinologist used in his type 1 diagnosis. I am 6?1?, meaning I was probably 5-10 pounds overweight six months ago. I have gained (or stopped losing weight at least) since I began treatment.

I suppose my real question is whether I should be going to see a different endocrinologist to re-evaluate both the diagnosis (1, 2, or LADL all seem like possibilities) and treatment (I honestly think if I had taken the 5+ units of Novolog, it would?ve sent me to the hospital unless I had eaten something equivalent to a loaf of bread).

Answer by NAP BQ
You can test for type 1 vs type 2 by checking your endogenous insulin levels. That is, if you are producing insulin as in type 2, you can measure it. Type 1 you have no insulin. Looks like you were doing well with metformin, so I don?t understand why the endocrinologist was convinced you had type 1. Getting on insulin has its risks! not only can insulin cause hypoglycemic affects that can kill you, but too much insulin causes atherosclerosis and heart disease.

Age is not a reason to say you are type1, since many kids now are diagnosed with type 2. Bottom line is, you need to find out if you have endogenous (from/in your body) insulin production. You can test for antibodies too.

'The Bachelor' Winner Revealed: Courtney Robertson And Ben Flajnik Get Engaged In Season 16 Finale

Considering Courtney Robertson has been the only person making "The Bachelor" worth watching in Season 16, it's only fitting that she took home the title of winner of this season after Ben Flajnik proposed, and she accepted.

And after weeks of boring dates and Ben's hair flipping, the 29-year-old California winemaker chose Courtney over Lindzi Cox, the southern belle who was the other contestant in "The Bachelor's" final two.

In the two-hour finale (which aired Mon., March 12 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC), Ben took Courtney on a helicopter ride above The Matterhorn in Switzerland, which he called one of the "top 10 coolest things I've ever done in my life." In a picturesque wintry scene, they made snow angels and went tobogganing before Ben confessed: "With Courtney, I'm completely and utterly myself. I'm so happy to be around her. She makes me feel like a kid ... I've always wanted to feel this comfortable around a woman."

In the climactic final minutes, it appeared Ben might not propose when he hinted he didn't want to have his heart broken again. "But I promised myself that I wouldn't get down on one knee again unless I was certain it was forever,' he said. "And I want to tell you that you are my forever. You're my forever, and I have waited a really, really long time to tell you that I am in love with you, more than you'll ever know. And that this experience and journey has been worth it every step of the way."

When he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him, she said, "Yes, of course I will. I love you so much ... I will love you forever."

Courtney, a model who shocked audiences and her fellow contestants alike with her penchant for nudity and incredibly high-pitched voice, won over Ben in the end, even though the other ladies of "The Bachelor" weren't fans of her inability to keep her clothes on or follow the rules.

But in December 2011, rumors started popping up that Courtney was the winner, with Ben proposing to her in the end.

And the two have already walked down the aisle ... kind of. On the Feb. 20 episode, Courtney and Ben had a mock wedding ceremony in her hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. "This is the best way I can think of to show Ben how I feel about him," she said. "We're at this place where I've always wanted to get married and I've got a little wedding planned."

In his vows, Ben told Courtney: "From the moment I saw you, you took my breath away. What I asked myself after our first date was, 'Was this too good to be true?' The answer to that I found in Belize is 'No' -- you're incredible."

Later, despite the awkward date-turned-faux wedding, Ben said standing at the altar with Courtney "felt pretty natural."

She added: "We are not Mr. and Mrs. Flajnik yet, but it feels pretty good to try it on for size."

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? John Jenkins lay on the court with his hands over his face as Vanderbilt teammates celebrated all around, exuberant after beating No. 1 Kentucky 71-64 for the program's first Southeastern Conference tournament title in more than 60 years.

The Wildcats might not really care about the SEC tournament. The Commodores did.

Jeffery Taylor scored 18 points, Jenkins added 17 and Vanderbilt rallied with a 16-2 run over the final 5 minutes to end the Wildcats' 24-game winning streak that lasted more than three months.

"Their 24 game winning streak. Their name on the front of their jersey doesn't matter to us," Vanderbilt's Lance Goulbourne said. "Whoever was in our way, we were going to play as hard as we could to try to win that championship."

Festus Ezeli also had 17 points for Vanderbilt (24-10), which was playing in its first SEC tournament final since 1951, the year of its only other championship. The Commodores pushed ahead in the final minutes with a few timely shots, but mostly with suffocating defense.

Kentucky (32-2) didn't score a field goal over the final 8:04 and shot just 35.9 percent from the field (23 of 64).

"We played really solid defense all game," Taylor said. "The coaches came up with a great game plan and we followed that for the most part. Also, you have to be a little lucky. They missed some open looks."

The Wildcats might still win a championship this season, but it wasn't in the SEC tournament. Even with the loss, Kentucky will almost certainly earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament when the brackets are announced later Sunday.

Kentucky coach John Calipari said the loss didn't dampen his enthusiasm for this team, but it did serve as a wake-up call.

"Maybe now everybody realizes we're not invincible," Calipari said. "We're like everybody else out there. We're going to have to execute, play hard and with some aggressiveness and intensity or we will get beat."

Darius Miller scored 16 points in a surprise start for Kentucky while Terrence Jones and Anthony Davis both added 12. Davis had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, but he got into some rare early foul trouble that limited his effectiveness.

Calipari has repeatedly told anyone who will listen that he doesn't care about conference tournaments, viewing them as a nuisance before the NCAA tournament because of the three-games-in-three-days grind.

"I wish this would have happened yesterday so we got home a day earlier," Calipari said.

And while Kentucky had bouts of good play, it was Vanderbilt that put together a much more consistent performance, one that left Commodores coach Kevin Stallings sitting alone on the bench, his face buried in a towel.

Vanderbilt had already played Kentucky close twice this season, and the Commodores were up to the challenge once again. Taylor scored 13 first-half points and Jenkins hit three 3-pointers as the Commodores pushed out to a 26-18 but had to settle for a 37-37 tie at halftime.

As is their custom, Kentucky's fans completely took over the SEC tournament and turned New Orleans Arena into a home venue, roaring when Miller was announced as a surprise starter. But even with that emotional lift, Vanderbilt had more energy in the first half and the Wildcats were constantly battling from behind.

Miller's eight first-half points and a couple of timely 3-pointers by Kyle Wiltjer helped Kentucky keep things from getting out of hand.

There wasn't much separation in the second half until about halfway through, when Jones had two powerful dunks to put Kentucky up 54-49 and get the crowd into it.

It looked like Kentucky might pull away, but then the entire team's shooting touch suddenly went frigid. After a dunk by Miller with 8:04 left, the Wildcats missed 14 consecutive shots from the field to lose for the first time since Dec. 10.

"We missed every single shot down the stretch," Calipari said. "And when I say every shot, I mean every shot."

Vanderbilt worked its way back from a seven-point deficit with 5:25 remaining, tying the game at 62-all on Ezeli's tip-in with 1:56 left and taking the lead for good when freshman Kedren Johnson converted a three-point play.

The loss spoiled the Wildcats' perfect season against SEC competition. Kentucky is 18-1 against SEC opponents.

Vanderbilt has won four of five games heading into the NCAA tournament and is certainly confident after beating the No. 1 team in the country.

"It's unbelievable. I'm so happy right now," said Vanderbilt's Steve Tchiengang, who was wearing a basketball net and Mardi Gras beads around his neck in the aftermath. "I feel so blessed to be around these guys and this coaching staff. It's just an awesome feeling. I really can't explain it. It's unbelievable."

The sun rises over Mount Hood Thursday, March 8, 2012, in Portland, Ore. The largest solar storm in five years has engulfed Earth, but scientists say the planet has lucked out so far. The storm arrived more peacefully Thursday morning than it could have. Scientists say that could change as the storm spends the day shaking the planet's magnetic field. It could disrupt technology but also spread colorful Northern Lights. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

(AP) ? A solar storm shook the Earth's magnetic field early Friday, but scientists said they had no reports of any problems with electrical systems.

After reports Thursday of the storm fizzling out, a surge of activity prompted space weather forecasters to issue alerts about changes in the magnetic field.

"We really haven't had any reports from power system operators yet," Rob Steenburgh, a space weather forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo., said early Friday. "But sometimes they don't come in until after the storm."

He said the storm reached a moderate level late Thursday, before going to a strong level early Friday. For most of Thursday, it was rated as minor.

Scientists say such storms don't pose a threat to people, just technology.

The space weather center's website says a storm rated as strong could force corrections to voltage systems and trigger false alarms on some protection devices, as well as increase drag on satellites and affect their orientation.

The forecasters weren't aware of any significant impact to electrical or technological systems, but said there was a two-hour blackout of high frequency radio communications ? affecting mainly ham radio operations ? stretching from eastern Africa to eastern Australia.

Steenburgh also said that there was another solar flare late Thursday, similar to the one a few days ago that set off the current storm.

"Right now we're still analyzing when it will arrive" and how strong it could be, he said.

The space weather center had reports of Northern Lights across Canada and dipping into the northern tier of U.S. states, Steenburgh said.

While some experts thought the threat from the solar storm passed by earlier Thursday, the space weather center maintained the storm's effects could continue through Friday morning.

The current storm, which started with a solar flare Tuesday evening, caused a stir Wednesday because forecasts were for a strong storm with the potential to knock electrical grids offline, mess with GPS and harm satellites. It even forced airlines to reroute a few flights on Thursday.

It was never seen as a threat to people, just technology, and teased skywatchers with the prospect of colorful Northern Lights dipping further south.

But when the storm finally arrived around 6 a.m. EST Thursday, after traveling at 2.7 million mph, it was more a magnetic breeze than a gale. The power stayed on. So did GPS and satellites. And the promise of auroras seemed to be more of a mirage.

Scientists initially figured the storm would be the worst since 2006, but now seems only as bad as ones a few months ago, said Joe Kunches, a scientist at the NOAA center. The strongest storm in recorded history was probably in 1859, he said.

"It's not a terribly strong event. It's a very interesting event," Kunches said.

Forecasters can predict the speed a solar storm travels and its strength, but the north-south orientation is the wild card. This time it was a northern orientation, which is "pretty benign," Kunches said. Southern would have caused the most damaging technological disruption and biggest auroras.

On Thursday, North American utilities didn't report any problems, said Kimberly Mielcarek, spokeswoman for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, a consortium of electricity grid operators. Her office didn't respond to a phone call early Friday.

Astronomers say the sun has been relatively quiet for some time. And this storm, forecast to be strong and ending up minor, still may seem fiercer because Earth has been lulled by several years of weak solar activity.

The storm is part of the sun's normal 11-year cycle, which is supposed to reach a peak next year. Storms as large as the latest one will probably happen several more times as the cycle ramps up to that peak, scientists said.

The region of the sun that erupted can still send more blasts our way, Kunches said. Another set of active sunspots is ready to aim at Earth.

"This is a big sun spot group, particularly nasty," NASA's Hathaway said. "Things are really twisted up and mixed up. It keeps flaring."

Storms like this start with sun spots. First, there's an initial solar flare of subatomic particles that resembles a filament coming out of the sun. That part usually reaches Earth only minutes after the initial burst, bringing radio and radiation disturbances. Next is the coronal mass ejection, which looks like a growing bubble and takes a couple days to reach Earth.

Solar storms have three ways they can disrupt technology on Earth: with magnetic, radio and radiation emissions. In 1989, a strong solar storm knocked out the power grid in Quebec, causing 6 million people to lose power.

For North America, the good part of a solar storm ? the one that creates more noticeable auroras or Northern Lights ? was likely to peak Thursday evening. Auroras were likely to dip only as far south as the northern edges of the United States, Kunches said, but a full moon would make them harder to see.

Solar storms can bring additional radiation around the north and south poles ? a risk that sometimes forces airlines to reroute flights. On Thursday, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines sent 11 flights to Asia on a more southern route rather than their more common path over the Arctic. Three American Airlines flights flew lower than normal over the northernmost parts of their routes to Japan and China.

Analysis: Spec Comparison: New iPad vs. Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs. Kindle Fire

The release of Apple?s new iPad mode, which was announced on Wednesday, means that it?s time once again to compare specs for the most popular tablets on the market. In today?s comparison, we?re looking at the new iPad, Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Amazon?s popular Kindle Fire.

In many ways, comparing either the new iPad or Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Amazon?s Kindle Fire is an apples and oranges kind of thing. Both of the larger devices pack considerably more horsepower, a better screen, and all kinds of other specs, than the 7? Kindle Fire, while neither can touch the price of Amazon?s sell-it-at-a-loss-and-make-it-up-on-volume Android tablet.

Our point, however, is to allow our readers to be able to choose which device offers the combination of features and price that works for them. Check below the table for our analysis of the specs.

The Specs
(Product images are intended to be close to scale, but may be off by a pixel or two)

Display

That said, Apple has really pulled ahead in the race for offering bang-for-the-buck with the new iPad. Offering more than 3X the number of pixels (2048 x 1535 compared to 1280 x 800) than the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and more than 5X the pixels of the Kindle Fire (1024 x 600), the Retina Display on the new iPad has the best display on the market. Hands down. In fact, it?s not even a contest.

There?s a big ?but? with that, however. Samsung has likely been waiting to see what Apple did with the new iPad before bringing out a new Galaxy Tab device. While several analysts have said that Apple?s competition will have a hard time matching Apple?s specs and price, we expect Samsung to do something to counter the new iPad in the next few months.

The Amazon Kindle Fire, on the other hand, isn?t trying to compete on the high end. With the lower resolution comes a far lower price. At the same time, the new iPad so dramatically raises the bar in terms of resolution, even some cost-conscious consumers will have a harder decision on their hands.

OS

Samsung needs to move its Galaxy Tab product line to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) as soon as it can. Apple is shipping iOS 5.1 with the new iPad, and users can update to future versions of iOS very easily thanks to Apple?s whole widget model. As of this time, Galaxy Tab users are stuck with Android 3.2, and our opinion is that it takes an affinity for Google?s Android approach to prefer it over iOS 5.x.

The Kindle Fire runs a customized version of Android 2.3 that is centered around accessing Amazon content and Amazon shopping. In our opinion that leaves both the new iPad and the Galaxy Tab head and shoulders above the Kindle Fire, but there are plenty of folks who like the simplicity of choices offered by Amazon.

Horsepower

Apple claims that its A5X processor offers much higher graphics performance than competing devices, but the jury?s out until it ships and the nerds get a chance to play with it, measure it, and argue about it.

Right now, there is a fierce debate over Apple?s claims, but the reality is that whether or not Apple was cherry-picking results when it claimed up to 4X graphics performance, the new iPad will likely offer the better performance until the next generation devices come out from Samsung or other competitors. Amazon?s Kindle Fire is never going to be competitive on this front.

As far as the CPU goes, we don?t know the clock speed of the A5X processor yet, but it is likely to be at least as fast as the Nvidia processor in the Samsung device, and the Kindle Fire has been called sluggish from the get-go.

Other Stuff

Apple?s new iPad weighs more than the other two. We can most likely blame that on the battery. On the other hand, the new iPad has a better battery life than either of the other two devices, even though it?s pushing that Retina Display. Accordingly, choose your trade-off. The new iPad weighs 1.4 pounds, while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 weighs 1.24 pounds. The smaller Kindle Fire, at 0.91 pounds, weighs the least by a lot.

The camera on the new iPad is the highest resolution, at 5 Megapixels, but we still think that taking photos with a tablet is a niche demand in the first place. This is, however, one area where competitors can try and outspec Apple by offering a higher resolution camera in future devices.

Apple?s support for Bluetooth 4.0 puts the new iPad ahead of the competing devices, but this is yet another thing we expect to change in a future device from Samsung.

Conclusion

If you want cheap and small, go with Kindle Fire. Some people like the small form factor, especially for reading. If you want the best overall device, go with the new iPad. Resolution, battery life, iOS 5.1, and the new A5X processor make it the best device device on the market.

Indeed, we think there is no compelling reason to buy Samsung?s current Galaxy Tab devices unless you simply prefer Android or hate Apple?s iOS ecosystem. At the same price as Apple?s new iPad, you get a worse display, poorer battery performance, and only a few thousand tablet-specific apps compared to more than 200,000 iPad-specific apps.

It?s no contest, and it won?t be a contest until Samsung releases a new tablet.

When that happens, we?ll be sure and compare the specs!

Drug-Free Organ Transplants From Unrelated Donors

It remains unclear whether the secret to Ildstad?s recipe is the facilitating cells or the timing of a certain chemotherapy drug, called cyclophosphamide, that is used to prevent graft rejection and GvHD. ?The facilitating cell adds an extra level of complexity that might not be necessary,? Tisdale says. The question is difficult to answer ? all of the study subjects received the facilitating cells.

Moreover, much about the cells themselves and the method used to isolate them remain shrouded in a veil of secrecy ? Ildstad is seeking a way to commercialize the approach through a company she founded called Regenerex, based in Louisville. ?It?s difficult to assess something that doesn?t provide the key methodology,? says Megan Sykes, director of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology at Columbia University in New York. ?Nobody is quite sure what these cells are.?

So the good news is that this will likely be funded right through the trials phase. The bad news is that it'll come out the other end wrapped in IP restrictions and not widely available to the public as a standard procedure.

National Restaurant Association and LivingSocial Partner to ...

The National Restaurant Association and LivingSocial have announced a new partnership through which both organizations will work to educate and inform restaurant operators on all available marketing channels to build restaurant brand awareness and increase sales. The partnership?s focus will be on a major research project to study restaurant marketing efforts and consumer attitudes.

?We?re excited to be working with LivingSocial to better understand how restaurant operators can market themselves locally and nationwide,? said James Balda, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer of the National Restaurant Association. ?Restaurant industry sales are expected to reach $632 billion in 2012, underscoring the industry?s importance as a driver of national economic recovery and solid employment growth. To continue to grow sales and create jobs, restaurant operators must closely follow consumer trends and leverage that knowledge to meet guest expectations.?

As part of the research effort, LivingSocial has provided an unrestricted grant for the National Restaurant Association to conduct a study examining the effectiveness of a wide array of marketing channels for the restaurant industry. Insights gained from the survey will be used to create resources National Restaurant Association members can leverage when selecting the best marketing approach to help strengthen their business.

?Restaurants make up a large portion of LivingSocial?s merchant base and our mission is to help them attract and retain valuable new customers,? said Mandy Cole, Senior Vice President of Sales at LivingSocial. ?We couldn?t be happier to work with the National Restaurant Association, and we look forward to applying the information shared through this relationship to better serve our merchants.?

The restaurant and foodservice industry not only feeds Americans, but the nation?s economy. It is the nation?s second largest private sector employer, providing jobs to more than 12.9 million people in 970,000 locations across the United States. However, despite positive signs of economic recovery, restaurateurs still cite ?building and maintaining sales volume? as one of their top challenges this year, according to the National Restaurant Association?s 2012 Restaurant Industry Forecast.

Results of the joint research on restaurant marketing will be released at the 2012 National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show in Chicago, Ill. (held at its new dates May 5-8).
