Tribeca Film Festival announces 2013 dates

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Tribeca Film Festival has announced that next year's festival will take place from April 17 through April 28 in lower Manhattan.

The festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in April; it was launched by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal in 2002, and over the years has premiered such films as "Let the Right One In," "The Exploding Girl" and the Oscar-winning documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side."

Tribeca Enterprises also announced that the 2013 festival will add a transmedia element and award, with the Tribeca Film Institute's director of digital initiatives, Ingrid Kopp, joining the programming team to select works that use multiplatform storytelling for the festival.

Bombay Sapphire gin, which set up a venue to screen transmedia material at this year's festival, will back the new program.

Tribeca will begin accepting submissions of films and transmedia works on September 17. Other deadlines are October 19 (early deadline for features, shorts and transmedia), November 30 (official deadline) and December 28 (late deadline for feature films only).

Submission forms will be available on September 17 at TribecaFilm.com/Festival.

Clinton speaks with Indian FM after Sikh temple attack

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called her Indian counterpart after a man attacked a Sikh temple in Wisconsin killing six people before being shot dead himself, a US official said.

Clinton, who is on a visit to South Africa, spoke with Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna a day after Sunday's attack.

"Our hearts go out to the victims, the families and Sikh community," said State Department acting deputy spokesman Patrick Ventrell.

"This is a tragic incident, especially since it happened in a place of worship. Religious freedom, and religious tolerance are fundamental pillars of US society."

According to the Press Trust of India news agency, Krishna conveyed India's concern that such a "heinous crime" had occurred in a place of worship and said US President Barack Obama needed to address fears of similar attacks in the future.

"An assurance to the Indian community has to come out from the Obama administration that their interests are going to be safe," Krishna said.

Open World Conference ? LAW: Protecting your online business ...

August 8, 2012 on 6:44 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Any business that has a website or is contemplating taking its business online should take steps to protect the business? ?intellectual property? rights through trademarks, domain names and copyrights.

Obtaining those rights will also insulate the business against claims and lawsuits from others.

The foundation for any online business presence is the business name and the names of the products or services offered. These names are trademarks or service marks, and the most effective way to protect the right to use those marks is to obtain federal registration.

Federal registration of trademarks is particularly important now that companies are taking their business to the Internet. The old distinctions that could allow different companies in different regions to use the same or similar marks for the same or similar products are eroding.

Today, businesses can easily expand their advertising and customer base throughout the United States using the Internet. Federal registration gives the holder the priority to use the mark nationwide.

Federal registration of a trademark also makes it easier to stop others from using confusingly similar marks to compete with your business on the Internet. Just as important, federal registration is the best insurance against other businesses claiming you are using a mark they were using first.

Each Internet website has its own unique ?domain name? address. Many businesses like to use a catchy or recognizable domain name to increase traffic on their website. For example, ?toysrus.com? is the domain name Toys R? Us uses for its website, and the domain name functions as a trademark in this context.

The best domain name strategy for any online business is to first confirm or obtain federal registration of its trademarks and then register domain names incorporating those trademarks. A search should be conducted to determine if there are any confusingly similar trademarks or domain names already in use by other businesses. If so, business owners should quickly contact legal counsel for advice in order to preserve their rights.

Obtaining a domain name is as simple as registering the desired name with Network Solutions Inc. and paying a relatively small fee. The ease of obtaining domain names and their importance in the online world often leads to clashes between trademark and domain name holders. Any business owner who becomes involved in a dispute over rights to use a domain name can attempt to resolve it by negotiation; by arbitration through Network Solutions Inc.; or if all else fails, through litigation.

The content of any business website is (or should be) original material, and it is protected under copyright law. Competitors are not allowed to copy some or all of another business? website content without permission, and vice versa.

Business owners can register the content of your business? website with the United States Copyright Office. This provides enhanced protections in the event someone unlawfully copies some or all of the website. If the work is registered before an infringement occurs, then statutory damages and recovery of attorney fees are available if a lawsuit is brought to stop the infringement. If the infringement occurs to register, a business will have to prove it was actually damaged by an infringement and recovery of attorney fees will not be available.

A word of caution: Internet law is developing and it is still not clear whether ?linking? and ?framing? websites of others businesses may constitute copyright infringement. If a link on a business website ?frames? content of another site ? leaving a home page as a surrounding border and bringing another?s content in without giving them credit ? this could be infringement.

On the other hand, simply posting a link to another website and identifying the other website?s domain name should not constitute infringement. The prudent business, however, will want to consider obtaining a linking agreement with any website being linked to in order to avoid any potential problems.

Are Skills in Auto Racing Transferrable to Other Human Endeavors ...

Almost every skill that humans learn is transferable and can be used somewhere else. Especially if it involves thinking or mental processing, there is always some other activity that can use that part of the brain which has been reformatted to work at processing certain types of information flow. The other day, I was talking to an individual who had some racing experience, as I have. His being in the racing of automobiles, and my way-back-when past experience has been in motorcycles.

Nevertheless I have done some less-than-legal auto racing in my day as well, and I very much believe that my skills were honed in motorcycle racing, which allowed me to compete and do better while racing cars. Anyway we got to talking about this, and I had mentioned that my dad was a fighter pilot, and perhaps I just got lucky with the genes necessary to do racing. I?m not bragging or anything but I could hold my own. The individual I was talking to was a highly skilled auto racing driver, and he had done quite well for himself and was now semi pro, much more than I?d ever achieved.

As we got to talking more and more we were talking about the concept of ?Slow-Mo? when your mind slows everything down, as your adrenaline is flowing, and your heart rate is up ? it?s as if everything stands still, and everything is in vivid detail in microseconds. If you?ve ever done any racing, or played sports at a high-level you know what I?m talking about, now then, are skills in auto racing transferable to other human endeavors? That is the question of the day ? and what we were trying to figure out, seriously, it makes sense that they have to be.

Mental processing at high rates of speed when it counts most might be used for self defense, or other types of sports. It might be a skill which could help in playing a musical instrument or doing something which requires a lot of skill in a proper sequence in a very short amount of time. Does that make sense? Now realize this is only theory based on observations and experiences, and each of us has different types of experiences in our lives. However you can understand why this is an important question.

Okay so, what I?d like you to do is please consider all this, and if you?ve had similar experiences and other types of events in your life, I?d sure like to hear about them. In fact, I?m interested in your comments, questions, and thoughts on this matter. Indeed I hope you will please think on it, and shoot me an e-mail.

Google Chrome 21

By Michael Muchmore

Last time around there wasn't much to talk in terms of new features, but Google Chrome 21 adds a few enticing new capabilities. For those well-heeled enough to have purchased Retina MacBook, the browser now supports their laptop's ultra-high-resolution display. For the rest of us, Chrome 21 supports an HTML5 feature (on the heels of similar support in Opera 12) that allows webpages to access your webcam and mic. Chrome 21 also brings more support for gamepads and more printing capabilities. All of this falls into the category of icing on the cake: Chrome remains the Web browser of choice, thanks to blazing speed, and ground-breaking features and technology support.?

Hurtling the Google browser over the crowd are unique features like Chrome Instant, built-in Flash and PDF display, leading Web standards support, and a minimalist application window that lets Web pages shine unimpeded. The competition?Firefox 14 (Free, 4 stars), Internet Explorer 9 (Free, 4 stars), Safari 5.1 (Free, 4 stars), and Opera 12 (Free, 4 stars), and Maxthon 3.4?still struggles to equal Chrome's Spartan user interface, speedy operation, and emerging standards support.

Chrome's speed is now boosted by hardware acceleration, the use of your PC's graphics processor to speed up operations, a first introduced by IE9. To this Chrome's adds support for 3D WebGL graphics that even works on older computers, such as those running Windows XP?something IE9 can't boast. Chrome is also the fastest browser to start up, as my testing shows.

But speed involves more than pure performance results on tests. Speed also comes with new standards support, in Chrome's case, for Google's SPDY initiative, which rewrites the basic transport protocol of the Web?HTTP. SPDY eliminates redundant interactions and compresses some sent data to speed up browsing. Only sites that support the standard, like some of Google's own, will benefit from the speedup, however.

Another speeder-upper comes in the form of Chrome's many "instant" features. First, there was Google Instant, by which Web search results start appearing as soon as you start typing in the Google search box. Then came Instant Pages, in which Chrome tries to guess which link you're likely to click on next, and preload that page in the background. Another "instant" feature, pre-loads the first-proposed autocomplete site in the background when you start typing in the browser's address bar, so that it springs into view instantly when you click on the auto suggestion's entry.

As it increases in popularity, Google Chrome is becoming more and more a conduit for Google's Web services, and the services themselves in turn are being honed for Chrome. The browser's new tab page is tweaked to give more prominence to the Chrome Web app store.

Chrome boasts all the Web browser tools we've come to expect: bookmark syncing, a built-in PDF reader, and extensions. The browser's fine design, compatibility, and especially the speed have impressed the Web community enough to make Chrome the fastest growing browser in terms of market share. On this measure, it's got anywhere from 19 to 34 percent, depending on whose numbers you believe. Let's take a look at what makes this browser so special.

Swift Setup
Even the setup process shows Chrome's commitment to speed: Just click the Install button on the Chrome Web page, and you'll have the browser up and running in less than a minute, with no wizard to go through and no system restart. The browser's available for Mac OS X and Linux, as well as Windows. It also updates itself automatically in the background.

Starting with version 17, a change in the first-run appearance of the browser occurred. You still saw a generous dialog box giving you the option to use Bing, Google, or Yahoo as your search engine, but the first view of the browser window asks you to sign into a Google account. This doesn?t change the behavior of the browser, but it does show Google?s increasingly solipsistic view of the Web, and raises concerns about browser tracking. On the plus side, it does give you the benefit of being able to sync your different browser settings and bookmarks on different computers (more on this later).

Chrome Instant Pages
Not to be confused with Chrome Instant (see below) or Google Instant (which works on all browser to load Google search results as you type), Chrome Instant Pages requires both Chrome and a site that supports the feature. Of the latter, there is now just one important one: Google Search. The idea is that when you perform a search in Google, the browser will pre-load the page for the result link you're most likely to click on.

In several tests on a slower Wi-Fi connection, however, I only noticed an occasional improvement for simple pages. It seemed only to work for the first result link. Heavy multimedia sites still took their time to load. On a very fast wired connection, some page result were extremely fast, but in that case, you don't really benefit from pre-loading. I saw a definitely faster load for grainger.com than in Opera on the same connection. The idea makes a lot of sense though, particularly for multipage articles, where it's most likely that the next link you'll hit is the one labeled "Next."

The only drawback: If the site guesses your next click wrong, page load could be slower than without Instant Pages, and you'll have wasted bandwidth loading a page you never visited. But this is a technique that's been done using JavaScript or HTML and CSS for years, so I'm not sure why we need a browser-specific solution to preloading pages, but Instant Pages does have the ability to load outside sites, rather than just pages of your own. If you don't like the idea of your browser loading pages before you click on a link, you can turn off the feature in the Under the Hood section of Options (accessible from the wrench icon), and uncheck "Predict network actions to improve page load performance."

Built-in Flash and PDF Support
Chrome is the only browser to come with Adobe Flash built in, rather than requiring a separate (and annoying) installation. And not having to perform the frequent required updates of the Flash plugin separately is another boon?it updates automatically with the browser. With version 10, many of the security issues with Flash (famously bemoaned by Apple's Steve Jobs) went away, thanks to running the plugin in an isolated sandbox so that it doesn't have access to critical system areas.

Chrome boasts a PDF reader as well, so you don't have to worry about installing any Adobe plugins for viewing specialized Web content. When you load a PDF, an intuitive toolbar shows when your mouse cursor is in the southeast vicinity of the browser window. From this, you can have the document fill the width of the window, show a full page, or zoom in and out. By default, you can select text for cutting and pasting, but I couldn't copy and paste images. You can print the PDF as you would any Web page.

Chrome's PDF viewer not only does what its name implies, but also serves as a print preview feature. Unlike IE's print preview, Chrome's shows up in a tab rather than its own window. But you have to go through it to print: In IE, I can just click the printer icon to send a page to the printer if I don't want to fuss with settings. I could choose between color and B&W, portrait and landscape, and choose the target printer, or print to PDF.

An Advanced button got me into the printer's own settings dialog, but this dismissed the print preview, making me have to choose Print from the menu again. But Chrome didn't let me choose a zoom percentage for the printout as Firefox and IE did, nor did it let me turn page headers on and off or choose margin sizes in a Page Setup dialog as those two did. So Chrome's print preview is a decent start, but it's still a bit behind the competition.

On the topic of printing, Chrome 21 adds more support for Google Cloud Print, which is starting to garner more support among printer manufacturers. Now your printers are listed in Chrome?s print dialog. You can also now print to Google Drive, Chrome on your mobile device, or a nearby FedEx office.

Interface
Minimalism has been a hallmark of Chrome since its first beta release. Tabs are above everything, and the only row below them holds the combined search/address bar, or "Omnibox." Here you can type any part of an address or page title, and the most likely site candidates will be presented in a dropdown. Optionally you can display bookmark links in a row below this. And the control buttons on the top-right of the browser window have been reduced to the absolute minimum?just one.

Google has removed the Page icon and placed some of its functions under the wrench button. Some of the Page options have been combined into buttons on one line in the menu, such as Cut, Copy, and Paste. I like what Google's done with the Zoom choice on the menu, adding plus and minus buttons that save you from having to fly out another submenu.

Another theme in the Chrome interface is that everything looks like a Web page, displaying in the main browser window, rather than in separate dialog boxes. This includes the interfaces for History, Extensions, Bookmarks, and even Options.

Mac users haven't been overlooked in the interface department, either. The browser supports OS X Lion's full screen view, along with overlay scrollbars that only appear when you're scrolling. Other more minor characteristics of the OS X "Aqua" style give Chrome on the Mac a more Mac-y appearance. And with Chrome 21, the new MacBooks with Retina display get native high-res support.

Egypt hunts down militants as slain soldiers buried

Egyptian forces on Tuesday raided homes in search of suspects in an attack that killed 16 soldiers on the border with Israel and prepared to close smuggling tunnels to Gaza, security officials said.

The crackdown was launched as the military held a funeral for the soldiers killed when more than 30 militants attacked a border guard post under the cover of mortar fire and commandeered a military vehicle into Israel.

Officials said soldiers and police raided several homes near the north Sinai town of El-Arish in search of known Islamist extremists who might be linked to Sunday's attack, the deadliest of its kind decades.

Israel handed over to Egypt six "completely charred" bodies that were in the armoured personnel carrier that was driven into Israel where it was destroyed in a helicopter strike, said a medical official in El-Arish.

The source said one of the bodies was "probably that of the soldier who was forced to drive the vehicle." The militants had also used an explosives-laden truck that blew up at a border post.

Meanwhile, an AFP correspondent saw large trucks loaded with bulldozers headed to Rafah, the town on the border with the Gaza Strip that sits atop a honeycomb of smuggling tunnels.

"There are preparations to close the tunnels," a security official said.

At the military funeral in Cairo, attended by Defence Minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and senior government officials, only 15 caskets, wrapped in the military flag, could be seen.

"Every Egyptian feels this attack was directed against them. They all want vengeance, and there must be blood for blood," a presenter said during a live broadcast of the funeral on state television.

Sunday's attack highlighted the government's tenuous grip on the Sinai Peninsula, from where Islamist militants have launched several rocket attacks on Israel and a deadly cross border raid last year.

The most recent attack presents a challenge to Egypt's new Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood has good relations with the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip.

Morsi did not attend the funeral, where some protesters chanted slogans against the Muslim Brotherhood, and according to witnesses, tried to assault the Islamist Prime Minister Hisham Qandil.

His spokesman said in a statement that Morsi did not attend because the security measures needed to guard the president would have impinged on the "popular character" of the ceremony.

On Tuesday, Morsi visited soldiers wounded in the attack and hospitalised in Cairo, the official MENA news agency reported.

Morsi has received both Hamas's chief and its prime minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniya, in visits, along with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, and his government has eased border restrictions on Gaza.

Egypt closed until further notice its Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory's only access to the outside world that is not controlled by Israel.

The enclave has been under a semi-blockade by Israel since Hamas seized it in 2007.

After president Hosni Mubarak's ouster in February 2011, militants stepped up attacks in Sinai, prompting the military, then in charge of the country, to send reinforcements to the peninsula.

The Israeli army said in a statement that the Kerem Shalom crossing, which lies on the border of Israel, Egypt and Gaza and where the gunmen breached the fence, had been reopened on Tuesday morning.

Samsung Galaxy S3 getting Jelly Bean in Q3, Galaxy S2 and Note in Q4 [Rumors]

According to a new report from?SamMobile Samsung Galaxy S3 owners shouldn?t have to wait too long for the arrival of Android 4.1 on their devices. According to intel coming from within Samsung, the update has already made it through the early rounds of testing as ?public? builds are being assembled for further evaluation. A rollout of Jelly Bean for the S3 seems likely for late Q3/early Q4.

Jelly Bean should follow for a few other devices by the end of the year, including the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Samsung Galaxy Note, but initial testing is still taking place. There is a chance that Samsung will opt to deliver a ?value pack? update rather than the full Android 4.1 software, but Q4 is the optimistic delivery estimate either way. ?Finally, rumors put a Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Note 2 towards the end of the year, which suggests that the handset will launch with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung has yet to confirm dates and devices for the upgrade to Jelly Bean, so don?t go writing it down on the calendar just yet. If you do, be sure to use a pencil with a good eraser, because things are likely to change.

MGM posts loss, but revenue leaps on hotel, casino

NEW YORK (AP) ? MGM Resorts International on Tuesday posted a second-quarter loss double what Wall Street forecast, but that didn't rattle investors. They focused on the casino and resort operator's surging revenue, driven by better-than-expected results in China and higher rates for hotel rooms.

Shares jumped as much as 10 percent in morning trading, before falling back.

Results for the Las Vegas company, which runs the MGM Grand, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay among others, have been a story in contradictions for the last several years. While its revenue has steadily improved, it has posted losses in all but a handful of quarters as it dealt with a mountain of debt and declining values of some of its properties.

As of June 30, it had about $13.4 billion in debt, but it said it's trying to refinance much of that at lower interest rates, which will enable it to save money.

Between April and June, MGM lost $145.5 million, or 30 cents per share, compared with a year-ago profit of $3.44 billion, or $6.22 per share.

Last year's second quarter included a $6.30 per share gain on consolidation of MGM China. That unit runs a casino in Macau, the only spot in China where gambling is legal. It went public in Hong Kong last June.

Revenue shot up 29 percent, to $2.32 billion, from $1.81 billion last year.

Analysts, on average, forecast a loss of 15 cents per share, on revenue of $2.35 billion, according to FactSet.

Casino revenue in the domestic resorts MGM owns fell 1 percent. Slots revenue was flat, while revenue from hotel rooms rose 3 percent on higher rates.

MGM China revenue rose 6 percent, driven by higher traffic at its main floor table games and slots.

MGM still has much of its business in Sin City, unlike its major counterparts Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts International.

Las Vegas Sands Corp., which operates The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, said last month that its second-quarter profit tumbled by 35 percent, mostly due to lower table winnings in Asia and at home. Wynn Resorts Ltd. said its second-quarter earnings rose from the same quarter last year, which was weighed down by a hefty charge. But revenue fell at its operations in both Las Vegas and Macau.

MGM shares added 50 cents, or 5.3 percent, to $9.88. The stock has traded between $7.40 and $14.94 in the past 52 weeks.
