Back-to-School Vaccinations: A How-To Guide

Back-to-school time means shopping for school or dorm room supplies, picking classes and savoring summer's waning days. But getting vaccinations is another item that should be on the to-do list.

Though people may consider vaccinations to be something only young kids need, there are vaccines that are recommended for older kids and teens, as well as adults. Keeping up with vaccinations is a healthy choice, experts say.

"Vaccinations are a victim of their own success," said Dr. Peter Wenger, an associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey?New Jersey Medical School. Because the shots have greatly reduced or eliminated so many cases of diseases, people assume they don't need them anymore.

"Just because you don't see the disease, doesn't mean that the agent isn't out there," Wenger said.

While the flu shot is the only vaccination that every person should get annually, other vaccinations are needed are on a less-often schedule. Primary care physicians can help out with monitoring, Wenger said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides complete lists of which vaccines kids and adults need, but here's a quick guide.

Kids age 6 and under

There's a reason vaccinations are thought to be a "kid thing," and that's because many shots are recommended for babies and young children.

Young children should be vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella with the MMR vaccine. The IPV vaccine protects against polio, and the DTaP vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (also known as whooping cough).

Additionally, young kids should be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, the chicken pox, rotavirus and pneumonia (the PCV vaccine).

Young children should also receive the hib vaccine, which protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b. This vaccine is only for children, because the risk of the disease disappears after age 5, Wenger said.

And children should get their flu shot on a yearly basis.

Kids ages 7 to 17

If they haven't gotten all of the vaccinations listed above, children of this age should receive "catch-up" vaccinations, with the exception of hib.

A booster shot of the DTap vaccine should be given at age 11 or 12, and children this age should also receive the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4). Flu shots should continue every year.

Additionally, in the prepubescent years, it is recommended that children be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), which the CDC recommends is done before young adults begin sexual activity, at age 11 or 12. Convincing parents of the need for this vaccine has proven tricky, however, as parents may have a difficult time understanding the need to vaccinate their children against a sexually transmitted disease before they hit sexual maturity, Wenger said.

Adults

The meningococcal conjugate vaccination, which protects against meningitis, is important for college students who may live in close quarters, and are therefore more susceptible to disease. Some colleges or universities demand proof of vaccination before allowing students to move in to dormitories. If a teen is moving into a dorm for private school or is going off to college earlier than age 18, the vaccine should be given earlier.

In adulthood, people should still update their tetanus, whooping cough and diphtheria vaccinations with a booster shot every 10 years. The CDC also recommends the HPV vaccine for young adults (ages 19 to 26) who were not previously vaccinated.

Additionally, an updated vaccine against mumps, rubella and measles is beneficial for adults, along with a yearly flu shot.

When adults reach their 60s, vaccines against shingles and pneumonia are important.?

Pass it on: Staying updated on vaccinations is important even into adulthood.

AP source: French runner Hirt tests positive

(AP) ? French runner Hassan Hirt tested positive for the blood-booster EPO, an official with knowledge of the result told The Associated Press on Friday. The IOC said he was ordered to leave the Olympics.

Hirt was tested during training in France on Aug. 3, according to the official. He said Hirt had been targeted by the French anti-doping agency for several months. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

Hirt was eliminated from the 5,000 meters on Wednesday when he finished 11th in a first-round heat. The 32-year-old Hirt was competing in his first Olympics.

International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said Friday that Hirt had been sent home by the French team but could not give details of any doping offense.

Hirt is the second French runner to test positive for EPO in the buildup to the games. Steeplechase specialist Nordine Gezzar also failed a doping test in June. The 32-year-old Gezzar served a two-year suspension for doping in 2006. He faces a life ban for a second offense.

PFT: Report that Bowe signed tender 'not true'

Panthers FootballAP

The Dolphins have promoted Dawn Aponte to Executive Vice President of Football Administration and Ryan Herman to Manager of Football Administration.

Running backs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley had big roles in the Patriots? preseason opener.

Austin Howard started at right tackle for the Jets on Friday; Wayne Hunter was out with a stiff back.

H-back Dorin Dickerson could finally be finding an NFL home, in Buffalo.

Steelers FB/TE David Johnson is believed to have a torn ACL.

Here?s a look at five Ravens who did well and five who didn?t in the preseason opener.

The Browns were the apparent victim of extortion in 2008 over the price of TVs and parking.

Bengals WR A.J. Green dropped what would have been a touchdown pass against Jets CB Darrelle Revis.

The good news?? The Colts have a new smart-phone app.? The bad news?? Phone service during home games is historically bad.

Fernando Velasco is quickly making the transition from guard to center for the Titans.

Here are five things to watch as the Texans open their preseason.? (Not on the list but surely implied?? ?Whether Matt Schaub or Andre Johnson will get injured . . . again.?)

Perhaps punctuating their position on Heath Evans? claim of a disconnect between Jaguars players and their new head coach, Mike Mularkey received the game ball after Friday night?s win over the Giants.

Each member of the Torn ACL Trio played for the Chiefs on Friday night.

After having to pull up on the passer in training camp, Raiders S Mike Mitchell is looking forward to being able to hit the quarterback on Monday night.

Broken clavicle notwithstanding, RB Ryan Mathews is still on track for a great season, according to his head coach.

Broncos camp-arm Adam Weber is drawing praise for his preseason performance against the Bears.

Rookie RB Alfred Morris may be forcing his way into the Redskins? warm-body rotation at running back.

Before rookie QB Nick Foles can become the starter in Philly, he needs to move to No. 2 . . . and he could be.

Injuries on the offensive line are making Cowboys owner Jerry Jones worry about the ability of QB Tony Romo to ?feel good about his protection.?? (There?s a ?glory hole? joke in there, somewhere.)

The new wife of former Giants RB Tiki Barber apparently is flabbergasted by the reaction she has received; ?The people who keep saying all these negative things about me don?t know me at all,? Mrs. Barber II said.? ?They just hate their life more, so it?s easy for them to hate me instead of dealing with their own problems.?

The new-look Bears offensive line is producing the same-old results so far.

The Packers played the Chargers on Thursday night with 18 players scratched.

The Lions faced the Browns on Friday night with 10 men out.

Former Vikings RB Caleb King officially has been charged with assault, for allegedly beating up someone who made fun of the fact that King looks like a celebrity and I can?t recall who the celebrity is and I?m too lazy to look it up.

Falcons rookie FB Bradie Ewing is done for the season with a knee injury suffered in the preseason opener.

FOX 8, owned by Saints owner Tom Benson, has announced a new partnership with the Times-Picayune.

Ongoing fumbling issues could cause WR Preston Parker to lose his spot as a kick/punt returner.

Panthers QB Cam Newton says that Saturday?s preseason opener provides the ?first pop quiz? on the team?s improvement in 2012.

Rams CB Janoris Jenkins assesses his performance with humility:? ?I play like a ninja, an assassin.?

Seahawks G John Moffitt is expected to have elbow surgery, which will knock him out for two-to-three weeks.

49ers CB Perrish Cox made a diving interception late in Friday night?s game, but the team was under orders not to return any late-game turnovers.? ?I?m kind of low-key mad,? Cox said. ?They came in the huddle and said on that play, if we get a pick or a fumble to stay down.? I saw the end zone but I had to stay down.?

Cardinals RB Ryan Williams and Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli have developed an unlikely friendship.

Green Living 101: How to reduce your homes carbon footprint | The ...

The following is a guest post by Megan Mostyn-Brown, a writer for the home improvement helper, EiEiHome.com. The site allows users to search for contractors, service providers and companies for your home improvement needs. They also happen to have a very informative blog that you can check out here.

Being environmentally conscious has become a daily part of modern life. From eating organic to recycling, there are myriad of ways you can reduce your carbon footprint ??or the negative impact your daily activities have on the environment. ?

One of the biggest ways to shrink your carbon shoe size ? and save money ? is to reduce the amount of energy you use at home. This doesn?t mean installing solar panels or opting for a wood-burning stove. Nobody expects you to live like a pioneer.

Instead, there are several easy, cost-effective adjustments that make a surprisingly big impact on the environment.

1. Switch Your Light Bulbs. Everyone knows that shutting off the lights is a big energy saver. But what?s a homeowner to do when the lights are on? Trading standard light bulbs for?energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs or LED lights not only saves you money on your electricity bill, but helps reduce the amount of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere.

2. Insulate. Heat loss is a huge contributor to the size of your home?s carbon footprint. Do-it-yourself or contact a contractor to insulate the attic and basement to keep from heating the great outdoors. Seal up any holes or cracks in your walls and make sure your windows close tightly.

3. Unplug. Your home is filled with vampires. Not the sparkly, blood-sucking kind you see in movies, but the kind that secretly siphons energy. This includes appliances, laptops and phone and computer chargers. Even when not in use, these items draw out energy. Unplug them and the problem is solved.

4. Switch to Vacation?Mode. If you?re heading out on vacation, give your home a break as well. Close all of the windows, unplug everything and switch big energy producing items like your water heater to ?vacation? mode. This mode makes the water heater pump out warm water instead of the piping hot kind.

5. Change Filters.?Old filters make items like air conditioners and furnaces work twice as hard. Switch the filters regularly and you?ll get better quality air at half the price.

6. Get an Energy Audit. After an energy audit, your home will receive an energy efficiency rating and areas of improvement will be identified. It?s a great way to pinpoint exactly how much energy your home consumes and you could get a financial leg up on making improvements (be sure to check with your Federal and Municipal governments for rebates).

Implementing these changes to your home routine may take a little getting used to. However, your lower energy bill and a healthier environment make it all worth it.

Product Review: Austere Attire ? Tales of a Muslim Fashionista

I received this hijab from Austere Attire called Demesne to do a review of.? Austere Attire was started in 2010 by two friends?Nilab Abdurahman and Marya Ayloush who made hijabs with chains, ruffles, and lace for family and friends.? Since then it has grown to a wider audience and an online store. You can also find them on Facebook?

The hijab I received: Demesne. Image taken from Austere Attire?s Facebook page.

This particular hijab is a wrap style featuring a zip.? I believe it?s not in stock anymore but they have other styles that have a zip feature.? First off I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how pretty the fabric is!? The picture doesn?t do it justice, as there is a slight gold shimmer in the fabric! :)

Pros:

  • unique design with the zip.
  • lightweight fabric that doesn?t slide around much and is good for hot summer days.
  • versatile piece that can be paired with many different looks (the gold shimmer makes it formal enough for evening wear while the zip feature keeps it edgy to be casual).
  • generous size that provides ample coverage and different ways to style it.
  • good quality workmanship with surged edges in matching thread.

Con:

Overall, I love this scarf!? It?s so me!? I?d rate it an 8 out of 10.? My suggestion for improvement would be to use a higher quality zipper that glides smoother.

If you?re looking for a special Eid gift, then this unique hijab fits the bill (or any of the other styles from Austere Attire).? Head on over to Austere Attire to browse their selection of hijabs!?Based on my contact with them via email, I can say their customer service was great, with quick replies to my emails. They have a Ramadan sale on now with all their printed wraps for $10 and their signature Amour hijabs for $20. I just think I might be doing a bit of hijab shopping myself as well as I?ve been ogling their signature Amour hijabs? :D

Sports Massage an Integral Part of The Olympics | New Jersey - NJ ...

The Olympic Games offer a unique opportunity for skilled massage therapists to blend their passion for healing with a love of sports. Considered to be the pinnacle of competition, the internationally studded Olympic stage is the ultimate event for sport lovers. For practitioners of sports massage, there is no greater honor than helping Olympic athletes bring their A game. Its prominence at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games is testament to the value elite athletes place on massage therapy.

Massage for Olympians
Massaging muscles in preparation for their being stressed to the maximum is not a new idea. In the first Olympic games of 776 BC, athletes received massage before an event. Afterwards, the competitors would take a dip in a hot bath, receive massage and then dip in a cold bath to prepare their muscles for the next event. However, massage therapy did not become an official component of the Olympics until Athens in 2004 where it was categorized under recreation, sharing a building with social lounges and computer labs.

The worth of sports massage during the biggest global sporting competition has finally been acknowledged this year. Because it is crucial to the well-being and performance of the athletes, the 2012 Games in London have included massage therapy under the medical category. After applying to be an Olympic games massage therapist and enduring interviews and trainings, those lucky enough to be among the chosen to be a volunteer at London?s Summer Olympic Games are able to make a legendary contribution to the world of sports.

Sports Massage
A growing specialty for massage therapists, sports massage is a necessity for many professional athletes. Boosting an individual?s competitive edge, the performance and wellness advantages afforded by sports massage is highly sought after. There are three main goals of sports massage:

1. Assist the athlete in achieving his or her peak performance
2. Prevent or reduce the risk of injury
3. Help with injury recovery when needed

Sports massage can occur in a variety of different settings and administered at different times with different goals. In general, there are four times to administer sports massage:

1. Pre-event Massage ? Pre-event massage typically occurs at the sports event, 20 to 30 minutes before the event. Encompassing techniques such as friction to help warm muscles up, compression to increase circulation in specific muscles and range of motion to assist in joint mobility, pre-event massage focuses on the muscles that will be stressed most during competition.

2. Post-event Massage ? Also administered at the event site, post-event massage is aimed at helping the athlete recover from muscle soreness or cramping while reestablishing range of motion and circulation. Post-event massage might consist of compressive effleurage for calming the nervous system and pushing fluid, stretching and petrissage to relieve muscular tension, compression for spreading muscle fibers and restoring blood flow, broadening strokes to lengthen tight muscles, and reciprocal inhibition to relieve muscle cramps.

3. Maintenance Massage ? Administered in between competitive events, a sports maintenance massage is part of an optimal wellness program that targets an athlete?s strength, flexibility, coordination, biomechanics, posture, stress patterns, scar tissue and existing injuries.

4. Rehabilitation Massage ? Because muscles worked to their limit cramp, tear, bruise and ache, even the most cautious athlete could benefit from rehabilitation massage. While sports massage should only be administered in unison with proper medical care, rehabilitative work can dramatically speed healing and ease pain. Rehabilitation sports massage techniques could include effleurage, neuromuscular therapy, compression, cross-fiber friction, lymphatic drainage and trigger point massage.

Sports massage is a satisfying and growing field, as professional athletes are grateful for the service. Since their bodies are in top physical condition, injury recovery time is dramatically reduced. Professional athletes? careers depend on their body?s ability to function optimally. Especially because the benefits of sports massage are recognized immediately, professional athletes have a very high likelihood of treatment compliance.

Particularly for therapists who enjoy being a part of the excitement of a sports game, tournament or competition, investing time and energy into the specialty of sports massage can be a great career move. Although certainly not for an initial foray into sports massage, those practitioners already flourishing in this field can experience the ultimate professional high by sharing their skills at the next Olympic Games.
