Dave Grohl says Foo Fighters are taking a break

NEW YORK (AP) ? Dave Grohl says his band Foo Fighters is officially taking a break.

Grohl sent an open letter Tuesday, calling the band "my life," but noting "it's a good thing for all of us to go away for a while."

Grohl told fans Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival he didn't know when the band would play together again, and affirmed that in the letter.

He created Foo Fighters in 1994 after his time as the drummer in Nirvana, recording the band's self-titled debut before inviting other members to join. The band has been one of rock 'n' roll's most enduring critical and commercial successes, winning 11 Grammys, including five earlier this year.

Grohl says he's now focused on his forthcoming Sound City documentary and album.

Official: Man's NYC arrest in Lohan dispute voided

(AP) ? A 25-year-old man initially arrested Sunday on an assault charge after Lindsay Lohan claimed he grabbed her in her New York hotel room in an argument over cellphone images was freed hours later and his arrest voided when the charge could not be substantiated, law enforcement officials said.

Instead, Christian LaBella of Valley Village, Calif., and Lohan filed harassment complaints with police against each other after they were interviewed by police about their run-in, law enforcement officials said.

Afterward, Lohan publicist Steve Honig expressed outrage that police did not charge LaBella.

"We think it's both distressing and outrageous," he said in a telephone interview. "Lindsey was assaulted and there needs to be a consequence for that."

LaBella could not be reached for comment.

LaBella was taken into custody about 6 a.m. after a 911 call came from the swank W Hotel in Manhattan's Union Square where Lohan apparently pulled the fire alarm, the two officials said. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

A former congressional aide, LaBella was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge but released later Sunday. The charge could not be substantiated so the arrest will be voided, the officials said.

The paperwork was being completed on cross-harassment complaints, which are considered a violation, and no other legal action would be taken, the officials said.

Lohan and LaBella met hours earlier at a night club, though it was unclear whether they previously knew each other, the officials said. They went back to her room, when she noticed the cellphone photos of her on his phone and grabbed the device, the officials said.

She claimed LaBella grabbed her and threw her, but later he said she had forcefully taken his phone, the officials said. Lohan was injured but not hospitalized, Honig said in a statement.

"Lindsay has spoken with police and is fully cooperating with the investigation," he said after LaBella's arrest.

This is Lohan's second run-in with law enforcement in as many weeks in New York City. The 26-year-old was accused last week of clipping a pedestrian with her car outside a nightclub and driving away. She was given a ticket and was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 23. Honig has said he expects those allegations to be proven false.

The actress was also involved in a car accident in California this summer that sent her and an assistant to a hospital, but didn't result in serious injuries for anyone. The accident remains under investigation.

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

Lohan recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

Steve Tomaszewski, a spokesman for Illinois Rep. John Shimkus, confirmed Sunday afternoon that LaBella has worked for the congressman in his Washington office. Tomaszewski said no one from the Republican's office had been contacted by LaBella.

Matt Reeves Confirmed for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

It was only a few weeks ago news hit that Fox was in search of a new director for?its sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes after director Rupert Wyatt left the project. The studio's short list for his replacement was reportedly limited to?Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders) and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy). And while there are some big names on that list, reportedly there was only one front-runner all along and he's just signed on the dotted line.

Matt Reeves will direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Since Fox is full-steam ahead on the property, presumably this is pushing aside several of the other high-profile films Reeves was attached to, like The Twilight Zone and This Dark Endeavor. And that's fine with us. Reeves has already proven that he can innovate as a director (Cloverfield) and that he can honor original source material (Let Me In), so we certainly share the studio's confidence that he's the right pick to deliver a worthy follow-up to the surprisingly great Rise when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on May 23, 2014.

But what say you? Will Reeves help or hurt the franchise? Or more importantly, do you even want a sequel?

UK plan to merge Antarctic, ocean research stirs science row

LONDON (Reuters) - A British government plan to merge its Antarctic research division with a centre studying the oceans has triggered protests from scientists who said it would cut studies of polar climate change and rising sea levels.

They said the British Antarctic Survey had a strong history of discovery including, in 1985, of a hole in the ozone layer that protects the planet from harmful solar rays. That helped spur a 1987 United Nations treaty on damaging chemicals.

"We should be increasing our research in Antarctica, not cutting back," said Bob Ward, policy director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and Environment at the London School of Economics.

"In times of recession, it does not pay to be less knowledgeable," he told Reuters. Antarctica, which holds enough water to raise world sea levels 60 metres if it all melted, should be a higher priority for research, he said.

The government, facing deep spending cuts, announced a proposal in June to merge BAS with the National Oceanography Centre into a new group, the Centre for Ocean and Polar Science. A final decision is due in December.

Professor Duncan Wingham, head of the Natural Environment Research Council, said there would be some cuts among BAS's 400 employees. BAS's funding had been kept up, shielded from deeper cuts in NERC's budget, he said.

NO CLOSURE

"Far from seeking to damage polar science, we are continuing to sustain our polar activity in spite of the difficult times we find ourselves in," Wingham said. "There are no plans to close BAS."

annual funding for BAS, based in Cambridge, is about 37 million pounds ($60 million). The new centre would be in Southampton, where the National Oceanography Centre is based.

Wingham said the plan for the merger was "to provide a single institute that can take on the largest challenges of polar science, north and south". It would also allow the two groups to share the cost of ships.

British spending on research and development fell to 1.78 percent of gross domestic product in 2010 from 1.84 percent in 2009, official data showed.

A scientist at BAS said there was still time to overturn the proposal, noting the final decision was still two months off.

BAS said it had no formal position on the merger.

Greene celebrates all things apple in weekend festival

GREENE ? Greene?s Apple Fest has arrived and once again the Ball Flats will overflow with apple goodness. This Saturday marks the 26th year that Greene has hosted the Apple Fest, and a crowd of 10,000 is expected. It is a non-for-profit event and admission is free. Bands such as the Ben Rounds Band will be playing throughout Apple Fest, which will run as usual from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

David and Leslie Gorsline have taken the lead organizing this year?s Apple Fest after Greg Cobb stepped down as chairman last year.

?We started planning for this year?s Apple Fest right after the last one,? said David Gorsline. Even though this is the couple?s first year leading the organization of Apple Fest, they have both been involved in the event for over a decade ? Leslie her entire life. They, along with most of the usual organizers from the United Methodist Church in Greene, will be returning this year.

Public health messages can influence infectious disease stigmas ...

? Infections ? Oct 01, 2012

Crafting public health messages about a disease may create stigmas that influence how likely people are to endorse certain interventions, such as isolating infected persons, forcing treatment on them and mapping their location, according to a Penn State researcher. Rachel Smith, associate professor of communication arts and sciences and investigator with the University?s Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, used a hypothetical disease - a virus carried by rodents - to develop 16 different health alerts describing the virus and those who were infected. The alerts, based on an existing alert developed by the Centers for Disease Control, indicated whether or not infected people were labeled by the disease. The alerts also indicated the disease was transmissible or not transmissible between humans; had visible symptoms (open sores on arms and a wet, loud cough) or no visible symptoms; and was fatal, painful, and caused paranoid delusions, or was mild and easy to cure.

The disease symptoms, labels associated with infected persons, perceptions of dangerousness, and responsibility comprise the four content cues in Smith?s Model of Stigma Communication.

?These content cues can elicit responses such as disgust and anger,? Smith said. ?They can also shape the development of stigma and influence the likelihood that people will share a stigma message with others or endorse isolating and removing stigmatized people from community.? The results, to be published in a forthcoming issue of Communication Monographs and available online now, showed that those communication choices, and how they made people think and feel, predicted how likely people were to endorse interventions.?

In addition, people were more likely to want to share the stigma message with others if the disease had visible symptoms rather than no visible symptoms.

?The visible symptom might suggest that infected persons are different,? Smith said, ?and this could facilitate social bonding among people spreading the rumor, even if infected persons are not considered a group in and of themselves.?

According to Smith, understanding how message choices influence the formation of stigma beliefs is critical.

?When stigmas form with infectious diseases, they can be barriers to health care access and provision in the short and long term,? she said. ?Understanding how communication choice in health messages influences the stigmatization process can give us the tools to write health alerts without creating or bolstering stigmas around infectious diseases. Once the stigmas are in place, we have few reliable ways to remove them.?

###

The Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics is a unit of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. Smith?s research was supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Robert Pattinson: World?s Sexiest Man?Again!

Sigh. Robert Pattinson was voted (or should I say elected) the world’s sexiest man for the fourth freakin’ time, and I think he’s only shaved maybe ten times throughout the process! I understand that he is super handsome, but I really think that it’s just people’s obsession with the romantic side of Twilight that gets them going. I mean, is he really that out of the ordinary? I think I saw an equally handsome guy at the museum today…seriously. Anyway, according to the 40,000 people who voted in Glamour magazine’s poll, he’s the one. Forget Brad Pitt, forget Johnny Depp, forget John Mayor… it’s R-Patz once again. The only really cool thing about him is ANYTHING he has done other than Twilight. Water for Elephants was nice, Remember Me was awesome…but Twilight? Not so much. Also, you may have read that he and Kristen Stewart might be getting back together. That’s very noble of him, but I am suspicious. I think maybe this the ENTIRE thing is a conspiracy by Summit. Interest was seriously falling in the franchise…until of course the cheating scandal hit. The actual list makes me feel a little better, but I just don’t know who half [...]
