7 Valuable Benefits You May Not Even Know You Have ...

Originally posted on Yahoo Finance

Most of us know about Social Security, Medicare, our employer?s retirement plan and IRAs, but if you?re like many Americans, you could be eligible for other benefits worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars that you might not even be aware of. These are benefits that you?ve paid for either by working for a particular employer or through your tax dollars. Here are some of the most common:

1)?Lost Pension Benefits

Just like bank accounts are insured by the FDIC, pension plans are partly insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation or PBGC. In a recent?blog post, my colleague Linda Robertson, details how 37,000 people have claimed $ 252 million in missing pension benefits from the PBGC since 1996. However, there are still over 36,000 people with almost $ 197 million in unclaimed pension benefits, ranging from $ 1 to as high as $ 676,436! If you were you in a terminated pension plan, you may want to check out the PBGC?s Pension Search to see if you?re one of them.

2)?Retirement?Accounts from Previous Jobs

Just as there are lost pension benefits, many people have retirement plans from previous jobs that they?ve left ?out there.? A?recent survey?showed that half of Americans left a retirement plan with a previous employer and almost 20% of them left accounts worth $ 50k or more. This usually just entails neglecting to manage the investments and keep the beneficiaries updated, but sometimes it can even mean completely forgetting and essentially losing the account altogether, especially for beneficiaries who may not even know the account ever existed. To make sure this doesn?t happen, consider consolidating your previous retirement accounts into an IRA or your current employer?s plan.?Here?are some of the pros and cons of your options.

3)?Spousal Social?Security?Benefit Windfall

If you apply for Social Security before your normal retirement age, you?ll either get your benefits or a spousal benefit equal to 1/2 of your spouse?s benefits. (You can also qualify for a spousal benefit based on your ex-spouse?s benefits as long as you were married for at least 10 years and you haven?t re-married.) However, there?s also a way to get both. Here?s how it works. First, you must wait until your full retirement age and your spouse has to have filed for their own Social Security benefit. You can then apply for a spousal benefit and allow your benefit to continue to grow (about 8% per year) until age 70. At that point, you would apply to switch to your higher benefit. Using this strategy, you?re basically getting paid a bonus spousal benefit while delaying your benefit. If your full retirement age is 67 and your spouse receives the average Social Security benefit of $ 1,230 per month, that?s a windfall of over $ 22k.

4)?Social?Security?Survivor Benefits

You may think of Social Security as a retirement and maybe a disability program, but Social Security is a life insurance program as well. While the lump sum benefit is only $ 255, your family may be able to collect thousands of dollars in monthly?survivor benefits?when you pass away. It?s not just when your spouse retires either. Minor children and your spouse if they?re taking care of a child under age 16 would be eligible too. (Be aware of the family maximum amount if you have lots of kids though.) This can save you thousands of dollars in unnecessary life insurance premiums. Since Social Security is no longer mailing out annual statements, you can check out their?website?to see how much your family would be eligible for.

5)?Discounted Employee Stock Purchase Plan

While it?s generally not a good idea to have more than 5-10% of your portfolio in your employer?s stock (do you really want your job AND your retirement account tied to the same company?), you may want to see if your employer offers a program allowing you to purchase their stock at a discount (typically up to 15%). Even if the stock never appreciates, it?s like getting an automatic return on your money. You can then sell the stock and diversify the money, although there are tax benefits if you keep the stock at least 2 years past the offering date and 1 year past the purchase date. This?blog postdemonstrates how lucrative this can be. Just don?t forget to limit it to no more than 5-10% of your total portfolio and to factor in the company stock as part of the equity portion of your overall allocation.

6)?Free or Discounted Estate Planning Documents

Do you have a will, power of attorney, and health care directive? If not, don?t let the hundreds or even thousands of dollars it can cost to hire an estate planning attorney be an obstacle in getting these essential documents drafted. You can get a basic health care directive from your hospital or download a state-specific form from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization?here?at no cost. Another resource for health care decisions is the?Five Wishes, which is a popular, low-cost living will form made available from the non-profit Aging with Dignity organization. You can also draft other legal documents like a power of attorney and a simple will for free at sites likeDoYourOwnWill.com?or for a relatively low cost at sites like?LegalZoom?and?Nolo. While it?s generally advisable to have an attorney look over your will (and especially if you have or want a trust), you can reduce those fees by putting together the first draft yourself. You may be able to get legal help through your employer at discounted rates.

7)?Free or Low Cost Investment Help With Your Retirement Account

Finally, an increasing number of employers are providing employees low cost access to investment management, advice, or guidance.? According to a?study?by Hewitt Associates and Financial Engines, the median 401(k) participant who used investment help through their employer earned close to an average of 2% more per year in their accounts (net of fees) with less risk. While that may not sound like much, the study pointed out that ?a 45-year old who uses professional investment help will have saved 47 percent more by age 65 than if he or she had not used help, assuming the almost 2 percent higher median annual return is maintained over the 20-year period.?The difference becomes even more dramatic if the initial investment is made at a younger age. A 25-year-old who uses professional investment help when investing $ 10,000 could have $ 105,800 by age 65 compared to just $ 52,100 had he or she not used help?a 103 percent increase, again assuming the higher median annual return is maintained over the entire period.?

The simplest method of help is through asset allocation funds like balanced and target date funds. These funds are designed to be fully diversified ?one stop shops.? The latter also automatically adjust your asset allocation to be more conservative as you approach retirement. The problem is that very few employees actually use them as intended and instead treat them as just another fund to be added to the rest of their portfolio.

In addition, asset allocation funds aren?t for everyone. You may not like the way they are managed or you may want your retirement account to complement outside holdings. For that purpose, many employers offer some form of managed advice service either online or over the phone, like Financial Engines or Schwab GuidedChoice?. These programs can recommend a more customized portfolio for you and even provide basic retirement planning on whether you?re on track and how much you need to save, often at no additional cost to you.

Finally, there?s a growing trend of employers offering on-site financial education and planning. You can talk to a financial professional and get your financial questions answered, covering not just investments but possibly a broader range of financial issues like budgeting and taxes. But make sure that the financial planner isn?t just there to sell you something.

In these tough economic times, it?s easy to focus on what we don?t have. Who doesn?t feel that your portfolio could be bigger and your home could be worth more these days? But with a little investigation, you may find that you?re a little better off than you thought.

After all the promises and finger-pointing, the presidential campaign is nearly over. But since the race has shed more heat than light on how each of the candidates would govern, I thought it would be useful to describe exactly what Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have?pledged to do on tax policy?if elected on Nov. 6. ?I?ll describe Romney?s agenda next week but to start, here is?Obama?s:

The elevator speech:?Obama would retain the current individual income tax system, but raise taxes on high-income households to help reduce the budget deficit. ?He?d lower corporate tax rates but make it harder for multinationals to avoid U.S. tax on their foreign income.

Obama has had relatively little new to say on taxes through the campaign, with nearly all of his agenda described in the 2013 budget he released last February.

Emanuel Steward, famed boxing trainer, dies at 68 - Idaho Statesman

? Emanuel Steward, earnest yet easygoing, proved rough and tough wasn't the only way to win in boxing.

With a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and a soothing voice, Steward developed unique bonds in and out of the ring with a long line of champions that included Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Wladimir Klitschko.

Steward, owner of the Kronk Gym in Detroit and an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, died Thursday. He was 68. His executive assistant, Victoria Kirton, said Steward died Thursday at a Chicago hospital. She didn't disclose the cause of death.

"It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade," Klitschko said Thursday. "I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship."

Steward, whose father was a coal miner and mother was a seamstress, was born in West Virginia. He got boxing gloves as a Christmas present at the age of 8, the start of what would become a long career in the sweet science.

He moved to the Motor City just before becoming a teenager and trained as an amateur boxer at Brewster Recreation Center, which once was the home gym of Joe Louis.

Steward, at the age of 18, won the national Golden Gloves tournament as a bantamweight. Instead of trying to make it as a professional boxer, he went to work for the Detroit Edison Co. and in 1971 accepted a part-time position as head coach - for $35 per week - of the boxing program at the Kronk Recreation Center.

A dynasty was born.

The Kronk's first professional champion was Hilmer Kenty, a lightweight from Columbus, Ohio, who started training there in 1978 and won the WBA title two years later.

But It was Hearns who really put Kronk - and the trainer known as Manny - on the map. The boxer known as Hitman was the first man to win titles in four divisions - he won five overall - and topped his 155-8 amateur record by going 61-5-1 with 48 knockouts as a pro.

Even though Steward had a lot of success with Hearns, some of his setbacks from his corner were among the most memorable in the sport. Hearns was knocked out in the 14th round by Sugar Ray Leonard in 1981 - Steward said that was the most painful experience of his life - and Hearns was on the short end of a three-round fight with Marvin Hagler in 1985 that is considered one of the best bouts in boxing history.

"He brought the very, very best out of me," Hearns once said of Steward.

Hearns wasn't alone.

Steward trained, helped train or managed some of the greatest fighters - and some kids who just needed to get off the streets - of the past 40 years out of Kronk and in other facilities across the globe, putting fighters from many countries in red and gold trunks.

"Lennox used to say when fighting as an amateur that everyone was afraid of the Kronk guys," Steward once said. "He saw the respect when they saw the colors."

The gym for years was seen as a way to keep kids out of trouble in southwestern Detroit.

"A lot of these kids would be in the streets," Steward once said. "They live for this."

And, Steward lived for it, too.

He loved boxing - and boxers - but like the Motor City, the gym he adored fell on hard times.

The city closed the original Kronk Recreation Center - a hot, sweaty basement gym - after vandals stole its copper piping in 2006. It was allowed to remain open, but it put Steward in a difficult financial situation and he later rented space at a gym in Dearborn so his young fighters could train.

"With the loss of Emanuel Steward, we have lost a true Detroit icon," Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said. "Emanuel Steward embodied our city's toughness, our competitive spirit, and our determination to always answer the bell.

"We are grateful for Emanuel Steward's many contributions to our city and his impact on generations of young people."

In the early years at Kronk, most of his fighters were black. In recent years, his melting pot of boxers included a Ukrainian heavyweight, an Irish middleweight and scores of young men from Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Steward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1966. He worked closely with Lewis during his title run, and with current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko as recently as July when the boxer led 22,000 fans in singing "Happy Birthday," to the beloved trainer.

Klitschko had to trained recently without Steward for his fight against Mariusz Wach next month in Germany

"His spirit is always here," Klitschko said. "I can hear his voice in sparring while doing things, whispering in my ear. As the famous saying goes, 'The show must go on,' and that's exactly the case."

Steward also trained actor Wesley Snipes for his role as a boxer in "Undisputed" and appeared briefly with Lewis in "Ocean's Eleven

Steward worked since 2001 as a boxing analyst for HBO, sharing his rich knowledge of the sport and an adorable personality with a younger generation of fans.

"Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty," HBO Sports President Ken Hershman said. "His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing."

HBO Sports commentator Jim Lampley - a friend of Steward's since the early 1980s and broadcast partner for more than a decade - said Steward's wisdom and common touch made him special.

"He was the most loyal, generous, positive spirited, broadly accepting man I've ever known," Lampley said. "He had a positive impact on everyone he encountered."

HTC seeks to reverse sliding smartphone sales

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? Taiwan's HTC Corp. enjoyed three golden years as the first company to make smartphones based on Google's Android software. Now, it is struggling to halt a slide in sales and keep its status as a global brand in a market increasingly divided between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.

An early maker of smartphones sold under brands like HP and Compaq, HTC started stamping its own brand on phones in 2006. Taiwanese company surged into the fast lane two years later with its Android smartphones that appealed to consumers because of competitive prices on the free operating system and their strong design.

But its sales faltered from the second half of 2011, partly because its limited financial resources put it at a strong disadvantage to aggressive marketing drives by Samsung and Apple. And unlike its American competitor, it lacked a distinctive flagship phone that captured the hearts of consumers as a must-have product. Instead it produced many phones, trying to cater to a wide range of consumers.

HTC on Friday reported a 79 percent drop in third quarter profit to 3.9 billion New Taiwan dollars ($99 million) on revenue of NT$70 billion. It was HTC's fourth consecutive fall in quarterly profit.

Worse may be to come. It predicted revenue will drop to NT$60 billion in the fourth quarter despite traditional pre-Christmas buying and its introduction of two new models running on Microsoft's Windows 8 software.

"HTC is undergoing a difficult period of trial and error," said Stephen Su, market analyst at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute.

"Its technology is good and its design capability is Taiwan's best," he said. "But like other Taiwanese makers, HTC falls behind in the area of practical application."

Su said HTC's unfamiliarity with Western markets puts it at a disadvantage in developing products for Western consumers ? in contrast to Apple, which always seems to be one step ahead of consumer sentiment, not only in the West, but all around the world.

HTC was founded in 1997 as a contract electronics manufacturer. Under its chief executive Peter Chou, the company focused decisively on smartphones in 2006, collaborating with U.S. carriers in marketing efforts.

HTC's performance reached its peak in the April-June period of 2011, when it shipped 12 million phones and its revenue totaled NT$125 billion.

The company's salvation may lie in pursuing alliances with tablet computer and TV makers so HTC phones can share entertainment and other programs with multiple devices just like iPhones do. The Taiwan maker has not publically addressed the question of a prospective alliance.

China's vast market could also offer HTC very good growth prospects. Economic ties and trade between China and Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province, have blossomed in recent years, providing new avenues of growth for many Taiwanese companies.

"The greater China market may be HTC's opportunity if they can make phones with features desired by the Chinese and possibly extend that experience to design products for Western consumers," said Su.

In China's fast growing smartphone market, HTC is expected to sell 6 million phones this year, ranking 10th, according to Taiwan's Topology Research Institute.

That would put it well behind Samsung's projected 32 million, Apple's 15 million and even Nokia's 11 million, the organization said. Total Chinese smartphone sales in 2013 will likely hit 256 million, up 36 percent on 2012, it said.

Dennis Chan, an analyst with Taiwan's Yuanta Core Pacific Securities, said that despite its current troubles, HTC can bounce back if it can come up with a new phone that resonates with consumers.

"The company is now rolling out only a few models instead of multiple phones to meet every taste as it used to," Chan said. "It will remain a recognized brand for high- and middle-end phones. But it needs to launch a flagship model with distinctive features to really turn things around."
