Do You Have PTSD? | Men's Health News

Depressed man

Do you show symptoms of PTSD?

The phrase ?post-traumatic stress disorder,? or PTSD, usually conjures up images of combat zones and car accidents?not Frankenstorm-smashed communities.

But the truth is, any life-threatening event, including natural disasters, can trigger the mental condition. (And according to a Harvard medical school study, three out of five men have experienced at least one major trauma in their lifetimes.)?Evidence of this dates as far back as the Great London Fire in 1666. And in the wake of Hurricane Sandy?s destructive impact across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic in late October, many people, especially those who are still displaced or living without heat or electricity, may be showing symptoms of the disorder.

?Regardless of the type of traumatic event?be it a rape or a hurricane?the symptoms that follow are similar,? says Spencer Eth, M.D., a psychiatry professor at the University of Miami and associate chief of staff of mental health at the Miami Veteran Affairs Healthcare System. ?Feeling bad after a natural disaster is called being human; it?s normal to be angry, irritable, and anxious. But if you start to feel worse over a certain period of time, don?t ignore it.? (Here are six more Health Treats You Shouldn?t Ignore.)

Take Hurricane Katrina survivors, for example. ?Research shows that people who waited a long time to feel relatively safe again?meaning they had more difficulty finding refuge and taking care of their basic needs?tended to develop PTSD,? Dr. Eth says.

Your move: Keep track of how you feel for one month in the aftermath. If each day starts to feel a little better, you may be in the clear, says Robin Kerner, Ph.D., a psychologist who is trained in psychological first aid response to disasters and works at Manhattan?s St. Luke?s-Roosevelt Hospital. The likelihood of developing PTSD is not high (about 30 percent), unless you?ve experienced previous trauma in your life (i.e., child abuse, war tours) or have a history of mental illness.

There?s also a slight chance you might have a delayed reaction, not expressing symptoms until months, even years, later. Kerner?s best advice: Practice what she calls the Grandma Cure. ?Eat right, exercise, get a good night?s sleep?all those things our grandma and mother told us to do are good for our mental health,? she says. ?Also, focus on creating new traditions and new routines to help cope over the holidays,? she adds. Sandy survivors: If by late November or early December you?re experiencing any of the following symptoms as described by Dr. Eth and Dr. Kerner, talk to your doctor.

1. You can?t turn off instant replay.
It?s normal to re-hash the horrific event (such as watching your things float away in water) in nightmares or flashbacks. But when you?re constantly seeing, hearing, and smelling frightening things as if they were happening all over again, you might have a problem. It doesn?t help that your TV keeps showing devastating footage of the event. Do yourself a favor: Change the channel, both on the tube and in your mind.

2. You refuse to return to the scene of the crime.
After?9/11, lots of people stopped flying. The same reaction applies for Sandy victims: You may not want to return to where your house once stood or rebuild your home to make it inhabitable again. Sure, it?s easy to want to pick up and start fresh somewhere else and never set foot on the beach or boardwalk that reminds you of the catastrophe that changed your life. But emotional numbness and avoidance will not help you cope with the situation, or truly move on. Face the facts, and if you can?t, don?t isolate yourself?try to stay as socially connected as possible.

3. You?re ready to rip someone?s head off.
You?re not sleeping well. You can?t concentrate. You?re feeling extra jumpy and on edge. It?s normal to feel all of these things if you?re tired, hungry, have no heat or power, and can?t fill your gas tank without waiting in a ridiculous 2-hour line. But if you continue to feel bad and pessimistic about your future, talk to your doc before you dropkick your neighbor. (For more ways to cage your rage, click here for 4 Easy Anger Management Tips.)

Rome Review: Anthology Film 'Centro Historico' Is Decent, Wearying, Excellent And Slight, In That Order

Reviewing omnibus films, in which the component parts came from different directors, can be a tricky job because the decision needs to be made whether to review those contributions separately, or to take a helicopter view and treat a film which is being packaged as a feature, as a feature. "Centro Historico," which opened Out of Competition in the XXI sidebar of the Rome Film Festival, poses no such dilemma: the four films it contains are almost as different from one another as it possible to be, and so attempting any kind of synergistic look at the whole would be kind of a nonsense. Indeed, to the unprepared (or those without handy press notes), aside from language (Portuguese), the common thread may be difficult to discern: in fact all four films are set in Guimaraes, the founding city of Portugal, with the project's producers asking four distinctive filmmakers "What stories does it have to tell us?" and then sending them on their way. The results are, to say the least, mixed.?

"Tavern Man" - Aki Kaurismaki
Sweet enough, but distinctly studenty, Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki's contribution is an amiable, almost wordless tragicomedy featuring a waiter (Kaurismaki go-to guy Ilkka Koivula) in a downtrodden cafe in the town's old centre. He opens the bar, serves drinks to a couple of equally uncommunicative regulars and puts on the "soup," i.e. he throws some dusty-looking leaves into a pot of boiling water. Outside, he scrawls "soup" on the chalkboard and waits, while customers file into the popular-looking restaurant down the road with its long menu of daily specials. He chucks some salted fish into the pot too. Still no one comes. Later he goes to meet a bus with an armful of red roses, but whoever he's waiting for doesn't arrive. He either goes ballroom dancing, or thinks about it, and at the end of the day, nothing has changed. The lead actor's expressively hangdog face is sufficiently craggy and careworn to justify the long periods we spend looking at it, but really this says very little about Guimaraes to us, and feels very safe -- Kaurismaki on bittersweet, quirky autopilot. [B-]

"Sweet Exorcist" - Pedro Costa
As safe and unambitious as Kaurismaki's contribution may have been, but oh, how we longed for its unpretentious embrace after about ten minutes of this segment from Pedro Costa. Though it starts promisingly, actually beautifully, with a series of pictorially staged and lit tableaux of people running through the woods at night, crying out to each other, it inexplicably then moves to a single, tiny location, the inside of an elevator, in which an old man, Ventura (a regular Costa collaborator), in striped pajamas, shares with a statue-like guard whose skin is sprayed with metallic paint. And for what seems roughly twenty minutes longer than forever, they stay there, seldom moving, mouths closed but apparently having a conversation of sorts in voiceover, or are those whispered voices in one or the other's mind? Don't worry, you will very quickly cease to care, as the half-remembered memories and fragments of revolutionary philosophy quickly become meaningless in their enigmatic monotony. In some moments it does evoke Beckett, as have previous Costa films, but it's an endurance test for even the most dedicated of fans. [D+]

"Broken Windows" - Victor Erice
Almost quaking with relief at being released from the last segment, we go into the film's most successful, by quite some distance. Victor Erice takes a semi-documentary approach to his short, but finds beautiful, evocative shots and insightful portraits nonetheless. The story here is of a huge factory, once the biggest textile factory in Europe that was in continuous operation for over a century before competition from Asia forced its closure and abandonment (the broken windows of the title). But on the wall hangs a huge photograph of the cavernous canteen, filled with workers on their lunch break many decades ago. It forms the literal and figurative backdrop against which a series of people recount to the camera their stories of working in the factory -- many stories are of hardship, but always tempered with a kind of acceptance, and a sorrow that the place, no matter how much misery it represented, had to close. The portraits he draws of these people are tremendously human, and the whole film stands as one of the most eloquent comments on the effects of industrial shutdown that we've seen. [A-]

"The Conquered Conqueror" - Manoel de Oliveira
A slight, and rather silly piece to close with, "The Conquered Conqueror" is the kind of short film that actually feels like it has too little story for its brief running time, but then, the director is 103 years old, so perhaps we need to cut it some slack. A tour group visits a monument atop which sits a statue of a conquistador. They take pictures. I guess we should have included a spoiler alert somewhere there, because really, that's all that happens, though the voiceover does try to convince us that there's something profound going on. Frankly, we didn't get it -- the point being made seemed pretty cliche -- and the only thing that saves this segment from a lower grade is that it is mercifully short. [C]

India may go for further reforms on airline investment

No carrier has publicly expressed an interest in buying a stake in Kingfisher or any other airline in India

INDIA is open to further reforms to lure overseas investors into its airlines, a government source said, after a dearth of interest following changes to investment rules left Kingfisher and others still short of much-needed funds.

?

The aviation ministry will meet local carriers soon to ask what changes were needed in the policy, added the source, with direct knowledge of policy developments.

?

India changed its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy in September to allow foreign carriers to buy stakes of up to 49 per cent in domestic airlines, a move seen as a potential boon especially for debt-laden Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.

?

All three listed Indian carriers - Jet Airways and SpiceJet as well as Kingfisher - are said by some analysts to be on the lookout for investment from a foreign carrier, providing a new source of funding for the industry.

?

The fiercely competitive Indian aviation industry lost a combined $2bn (?1.25bn) last year. All but unlisted IndiGo lost money, hurt by high state taxes on jet fuel, expensive airports and regulatory uncertainty.

?

But since FDI rules were changed, no carrier has publicly expressed an interest in buying a stake in Kingfisher or any other airline in India, one of the fastest growing markets in the world.

?

?We are also surprised why there is no activity. It?s a fact that no foreign airline has approached us yet,? the source told reporters speaking on condition of anonymity.

?

?We will ask these (local) airlines why FDI failed to pick up. What are the issues they are facing, if they are talking to someone,? the source added.

?

India?s high tax on aviation fuel was the biggest issue discouraging foreign carriers wanting to invest in Indian airlines, the source said. State taxes make jet fuel in India about 50 per cent costlier than the global average.

?

India is talking to states to cut taxes on jet fuel, the source added.

?

?(The) crux is that you need to bring growth to the sector. We have to create the environment to attract investments.?

Congo PM says U.N. must impose sanctions on Rwandan officials

PARIS (Reuters) - The prime minister of Democratic Republic of Congo urged the United Nations on Friday to impose sanctions on senior Rwandan officials linked to a bloody insurgency in eastern Congo, or risk losing its credibility.

Augustin Matata Ponyo said the U.N. Security Council must take firm action after a confidential report by a U.N. panel of experts accused Rwandan officials, including Defence Minister James Kabarebe, of arming and supporting the M23 rebel group.

In some of the worst fighting in months, the Congolese army repulsed a second day of attacks by M23 fighters on Friday 30 km (20 miles) north of Goma, the capital of the mineral-rich North Kivu province, scarred by nearly two decades of bloodshed.

Matata Ponyo said the army was determined to resist the rebel onslaught, which he said was aimed at capturing Goma and had already caused large numbers of civilians to flee.

"The involvement of Rwandan officials with these rebels is an open secret," Matata Ponyo said in an interview during a visit to Paris.

"If United Nations singles out Rwanda as a subversive influence in east Congo but it makes no effort to sanction those named in its own report, then it will have a problem of credibility."

U.N. diplomats had earlier told Reuters that the expert panel had urged the U.N. Security Council's Congo sanctions committee at a closed door meeting on Friday to impose sanctions on Kabarebe and other Rwandan officials.

Kigali denies backing Congo's rebels but some Security Council diplomats say its denials are not credible. Rwanda twice invaded its larger neighbor in the 1990s, sparking a lingering humanitarian crisis which has claimed 5.4 million lives.

The diplomats said it was unlikely the Council would agree to add Rwandans to a U.N. blacklist on Congo - subjecting them to an international travel ban and asset freeze - but even proposing such sanctions would send a strong message to Rwanda.

"ATTACK BY A FOREIGN POWER"

Ahead of a meeting with his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault, Matata Ponyo said he wanted to use his visit to convince France - a permanent member of the Security Council - that Rwanda was backing the M23 rebels to gain control over eastern Congo's vast mineral wealth.

"This is not an internal Congolese conflict. It is an attack by a foreign country," he said. "Until the international community understands that, a solution will be slow in coming."

Eastern Congo, ravaged by decades of on-off conflict, was once against plunged into violence at the beginning of the year when hundreds of soldiers defected and launched M23, which says it wants to overthrow President Joseph Kabila.

More than 760,000 people have fled their homes since.

The U.N. experts' report on Rwanda's involvement in the rebellion prompted Belgium to halt all new military aid to its former colony this month, joining a list of donors including the European Union and Washington applying pressure to Kigali.

"The publication of this report should prompt other Security Council members and European countries to take measures in the same direction," Matata Ponyo said.

Petraeus evades cameras, testifies before Congress

(AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Ex-CIA Director David Petraeus was whisked clandestinely into a secure room beneath the Capitol, escaping waiting crowds of photographers and television cameras, to meet privately on Friday with members of Congress for the first time since he resigned over an extramarital affair with his biographer.

The retired four-star general, who until last week was one of America's most respected military leaders, discussed with the House and Senate intelligence committees the Sept. 11 attack against the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead. He did not discuss his affair with Paula Broadwell, except to say his departure was not tied to the Libya attack. The scandal ended his career and has damaged others, and has led to a new CIA internal investigation.

The surreptitious entrance in the morning attested to the circus-like atmosphere of the scandal that has preoccupied Washington, even as the possibility of war loomed in Israel and the U.S. government faced a market-rattling "fiscal cliff" that could imperil a still-fragile economy. The tangled web has so far enveloped Petraeus; the top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen; two Florida socialites and a decorated FBI counterterrorism agent.

Lawmakers said the affair came up only briefly at the top of Petraeus' 90-minute appearance before the House committee.

"He did express deep regret to the committee for the circumstances for his departure" and reassured Congress that the Libya attack had nothing to do with his resignation, said Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I.

Petraeus also addressed his affair at the opening of the Senate hearing.

"He was very clear his resignation was tied solely to his personal behavior. He was apologetic and regretful but still Gen. Petraeus," Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., said as he left the hearing early to catch a flight.

Unlike previous appearances at the Capitol, when Petraeus has walked through the front door and greeted reporters, he was sneaked inside the secure hearing room for the morning testimony in a manner more suited to a covert operative, through a network of underground hallways. Police closed down entire corridors in the Capitol.

Congress sets its own security and protective police presence for witnesses. It's not unusual for those asked to testify to negotiate with lawmakers the details of how they will be admitted. Executives and celebrities are sometimes also allowed to make a private entrance.

Petraeus, 60, acknowledged last week publicly that he had cheated on his wife of 38 years with Broadwell, who is 40.

The FBI began investigating the matter last summer but didn't notify the White House or Congress until after the election.

In the investigation, the FBI uncovered flirtatious emails between Allen and Florida socialite Jill Kelley, both of them married. President Barack Obama has put a promotion nomination for Allen on hold.

Petraeus, in his first media interview since he resigned, told CNN this week that he had never given classified information to Broadwell. She has said she didn't receive such material from Petraeus.

But the FBI found a substantial number of classified documents on Broadwell's computer and in her home, according to a law enforcement official, and is investigating how she got them. That official spoke only on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case. The Army has now suspended her security clearance.

The CIA on Thursday opened an exploratory investigation into Petraeus' conduct. The inquiry "doesn't presuppose any particular outcome," said CIA spokesman Preston Golson. At the same time, Army officials say that, at this point, there is no appetite for recalling Petraeus to active duty to pursue any adultery charges against him.

Petraeus says no classified info shared in affair, probe continues

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In his first public remarks since resigning as CIA director last Friday over an extramarital affair, retired General David Petraeus said he did not share any classified documents with his mistress and biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Petraeus also told a reporter for the HLN television network that it was the affair, not any questions over the CIA's role during the September 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that prompted him to step down.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that investigators found substantial classified information on a computer used by Broadwell. According to law enforcement and national security sources, investigators are examining whether the information should have been stored under more secure conditions.

Despite Petraeus' comments to the network, investigators on Thursday said they had not ruled out the possibility that Petraeus passed on classified material to Broadwell. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing law enforcement investigation.

Broadwell, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing, has made no public comment since the scandal erupted last week.

The developments underscored a central question hanging over a scandal that has led to the downfall of one of the United States' most respected public figures: whether a private indiscretion put national security at risk.

President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that there was no indication so far that any classified information had been disclosed as a result of the affair.

Sources who have been briefed on the investigation said on Thursday that none of the classified material found on Broadwell's computer came from the CIA. The material, they said, appeared dated and pre-dates the start of Petraeus' tenure at the spy agency in September 2011.

As an Army reserve officer involved in military intelligence, Broadwell had a security clearance that allowed her to handle sensitive documents. With Broadwell's consent, the FBI searched her Charlotte, North Carolina, house on Monday evening.

Broadwell's security clearance has now been suspended, and she could have it revoked and face harsher penalties if it's found she mishandled classified data.

Law enforcement officials have said that they believe the investigation is likely to end without criminal charges.

The scandal this week also ensnared the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Marine General John Allen.

Allen has pledged to resolve questions surrounding what officials have called his inappropriate email communications with Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, who is also at the center of the Petraeus case.

Last spring, Kelley informed the FBI of harassing emails that were ultimately determined to have come from Broadwell. A subsequent FBI investigation uncovered Broadwell's affair with Petraeus.

Traveling in Bangkok, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he knew of no other military officials who have been drawn into the investigation. He acknowledged that further revelations were possible.

Petraeus is due to face lawmakers on Friday who are examining the September attacks in Benghazi that caused the death of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. The attack has turned into a flash point between Obama and Republicans who accuse his administration of misleading the public in the days following the attack.

Samantha Daniels: Is This Your Definition of ... - Huffington Post

Cheating is always an interesting relationship topic. Most people will publicly say that it's despicable, they would never do it, and they fully don't approve, but what do they really think about it? And how many of those "I would never do it" people have actually done it? I spent some time talking to people around town and here are the top 10 things people really think about cheating (besides the obvious):

1. They would overlook cheating if it was sex without intimacy, meaning no oral sex, no french kissing, no verbal interaction and no romance.

2. If they cheat with a stranger and it is just sex with no attachment, it is not really cheating.

3. If they have discussed the definition of cheating with their spouse beforehand and both people adhere to "the rules," then it is not really cheating.

4. As long as it's just one time with the same person and never again, then there will be no lingering connections or feelings and then this is not really cheating.

5. If each spouse gave the other a "hall pass" to go do it and they both take advantage of that hall pass, it's not really cheating.

6. If it's with a prostitute or call-girl so it's more like a business transaction, then it's not really cheating.

7. Only emotional cheating is real cheating because there is an emotional connection with the other person, hence a real relationship.

8. A threesome is not cheating as long as their significant other is participating.

9. Oral sex isn't really cheating and only intercourse really counts.

10. Swinging is not cheating because they keep it "in the family" and only bring others in as a fun distraction.

I know, I know... some of these definitions are out there, right? Whatever happened to just thinking that cheating is wrong; plain and simple, regardless of all the rationalizations?

What do you think?

French Troops Won?t Go to Mali,

President Fran?ois Hollande has categorically ruled out a French military intervention in Mali on Tuesday. France will not intervene ?under any pretext? in the north of the country, currently under the control of Islamist militias.

?

At a press conference held to mark his first six months in office, Hollande pledged that Paris would only provide ?logistical support? to the African nations that are set to intervene in Islamist-controlled northern Mali.

?

Last weekend the Ecowas grouping of west African nations agreed to send a military force to the troubled country.

?

Hollande described the decision as ?very important?.

?

Pointing out that countries such as Mauritania, Algeria, and Chad, who are not Ecowas

?

Presidential election 2012 members, took part in the meeting, Hollande insisted that Europe will leave the military action to Africans.

?

?France and Europe will provide logistical support and training,? he said. ?But France will not, under any pretext, intervene in Mali.?

?

But, with six French citizens among the nine Europeans held hostage by Al Qaeda in the Ismamic Maghreb (Aqim), Hollande said that the presence of ?terrorist groups? there is cause for concern.
