CHAMPAIGN, lll. There may be a few atheists in foxholes, but a new study suggests that in societies under stress, those who are religious outnumber and are happier than their nonreligious counterparts. Where peace and plenty are the norm, however, religious participation is lower and people are happier whether or not they are religious, the researchers found.

A paper describing the research appears in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The study analyzed data from the 2005-2009 Gallup World Poll, a survey of people in more than 150 countries that included questions about religious affiliation, life satisfaction, respect, social support and positive and negative feelings. The researchers also looked at 2009 Gallup polling data from the U.S.

This is the first study to analyze religion and its relationship to happiness on a global scale, said University of Illinois emeritus professor of psychology Ed Diener, who led the research and is a senior scientist with the Gallup Organization.

Previous studies, many of them focused on the U.S., suggested that religious people tend to be happier than nonreligious people, Diener said. The new findings indicate, however, that religiousness and happiness are closely linked to the characteristics of the societies in which people live, he said.

"Circumstances predict religiousness," he said. "Difficult circumstances lead more strongly to people being religious. And in religious societies and in difficult circumstances, religious people are happier than nonreligious people. But in nonreligious societies or more benign societies where many people's needs are met, religious people aren't happier everyone's happier."

Religious affiliation appears to boost happiness and well-being in societies that fail to provide adequate food, jobs, health care, security and educational opportunities, the researchers found. Religious people in religious societies are more likely to report that they feel respected, receive more social support and experience more positive and less negative feelings than their peers who are not religious.

In secular societies, which in many cases are wealthier and have more social supports, religious and nonreligious people experience higher well-being and positive feelings. Religious people in secular countries report more negative feelings than the nonreligious do, however.

The same trends can be seen in individual states of the U.S., the researchers found, with more people reporting they are religious in poorer states with fewer social supports, Diener said. Their religiousness also seems to boost their well-being and positive feelings, compared to their nonreligious compatriots.

The differences in religiousness between states is quite pronounced, the researchers found, with Mississippi reporting the highest (88) and Vermont the lowest (44) percent of people reporting that religion is an important part of their daily life.

Globally, 68 percent of people surveyed said that they were religious.

The study team included graduate student Sien Chieh (Louis) Tay, and David G. Myers, of Hope College, in Holland, Mich.

FILE - This Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 picture shows the U.S. Capitol just after the House voted to pass debt legislation on Capitol Hill in Washington. Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's says it has downgraded the United States' credit rating for the first time in the history of the ratings. The credit rating agency says that it is cutting the country's top AAA rating by one notch to AA-plus. The credit agency said late Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 that it is making the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country's debt situation. (AP) ? After the first-ever downgrade of the U.S. government's credit rating, the White House said on Saturday that President Barack Obama believes it's clear Washington "must do better" in tackling the deficit.

While Republicans and Democrats traded blame over Friday's move by Standard & Poor's to lower its AAA credit rating, a statement from White House press secretary Jay Carney was muted in tone and did not refer directly to the downgrade.

Administration officials privately called S&P's analysis flawed. But Obama himself refrained from comment as he spent the weekend at Camp David.

The move by the key credit agency reflected disappointment with Tuesday's pact hiking the U.S. borrowing limit, which called for roughly $2 trillion in deficit cuts over the next decade. It had previously called for cuts approaching $4 trillion.

In a statement Saturday, Carney called the hard-fought deal "an important step in the right direction." However, he said "the path to getting there took too long and was at times too divisive. We must do better to make clear our nation's will, capacity and commitment to work together to tackle our major fiscal and economic challenges."

Standard & Poor's cited "difficulties in bridging the gulf between political parties" as a major reason for the downgrade to AA+, a level down from AAA. The rating agency has essentially lost faith in Washington's ability to work together to address its debt.

The downgrade, hours after markets closed on Friday, is a first for the United States since it was granted an AAA rating in 1917. S&P warned about a downgrade as far back as April. S&P said Friday the planned deficit cuts did not go far enough.

Both political parties used S&P's report to buffet their policy cases and attack the other side.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner said he hoped the downgrade served as a wake-up call to the Democratic Party.

"It is my hope this wake-up call will convince Washington Democrats that they can no longer afford to tinker around the edges of our long-term debt problem," Boehner said in a statement. "As S&P noted, reforming and preserving our entitlement programs is the key to long-term fiscal sustainability."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, while not calling out Republicans by name, said S&P's action showed that Democrats' preferred policy approach ? a mix of raising taxes and budget cuts ? was the correct way to move forward.

"The action by S&P reaffirms the need for a balanced approach to deficit reduction that combines spending cuts with revenue-raising measures like closing taxpayer-funded giveaways to billionaires, oil companies and corporate jet owners," Reid said.

At least one senator, Republican Mark Kirk, called for the president to bring Congress back from its August recess to try and address the issues raised by S&P's report.

The debt-limit deal called for a nearly $1 trillion down payment on deficit cutting, and instructed a special congressional committee to draw up a blueprint for another $1 trillion-plus by November.

On Saturday, Carney said the president intends for lawmakers "to put our common commitment to a stronger recovery and a sounder long-term fiscal path above our political and ideological differences."

Obama met with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in the Oval Office late Friday afternoon before leaving for his weekend at Camp David.

S&P's decision, though, clearly angered the Obama administration.

Officials at the Treasury Department fought the downgrade until virtually the last minute. Administration sources familiar with discussions said the S&P analysis was fundamentally flawed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

S&P had sent the administration a draft document in the early afternoon Friday and the administration, after examining the numbers, challenged the analysis.

In a statement, the Treasury Department said, "A judgment flawed by a $2 trillion error speaks for itself."

Potential opponents of the president in 2012 pounced on S&P's announcement.

Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a tea party favorite, called on Obama to fire Geithner and quickly submit a plan to balance the budget, not just reduce deficits. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said the credit downgrade was the "latest casualty" in Obama's failed economic leadership.

S&P said in its report that downgrading the U.S.'s credit rating reflected the agency's belief that the debt deal Congress pulled together was not sufficient "to stabilize the government's medium-term debt dynamics."

S&P said that in addition to the downgrade, it is issuing a negative outlook, meaning that there was a chance it will lower the rating further within the next two years.

A downgrade a notch lower, to AA, will occur if the agency sees smaller reductions in spending than Congress and the administration have agreed to make, higher interest rates or new fiscal pressures during this period.

The downgrade is a psychological blow to an economy that has struggled to recover from the financial tumult of 2008. It came hours after a rare bit of good news, when the Labor Department announced the country had added 117,000 jobs in July, exceeding analysts' expectations. Any optimism from that report was quickly outshadowed by S&P's announcement.

Whether the downgrade will have a more tangible impact on the economic outlook remains to be seen.

Though widely predicted, S&P's decision comes at a time when investors already appear spooked by U.S. economic indicators and debt troubles in Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial average fell 699 points in the past week, the most since the height of the financial crisis in October 2008.

Regulators and the Federal Reserve issued a statement designed to calm investors, saying that the downgrade shouldn't impact U.S.-guaranteed investments. The statement sought to ensure that banks understood the downgrade would not affect the amount of money that regulators require banks to hold onto against possible losses.

If this week is any indication, S&P's decision is unlikely to have an impact on how the United States finances its borrowing, through the sale of government-backed bonds, bills and notes.

"Investors have voted and are saying the U.S. is going to pay them," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics. "U.S. Treasurys are still the gold standard."

Sheriff: School shooting plot in Louisiana foiled

(AP) ? Authorities in suburban New Orleans said Friday they uncovered a plot by three teenagers for "an incredible and devastating" attack at their high school during the first day of classes, with plans for two specific targets, indiscriminate shooting and suicide.

The 15-year-old boys, who called themselves Day Zero, identified a student and a faculty member whom they planned to kill, Sheriff Jack Strain said in a conference call with reporters Friday. They also planned indiscriminate shooting, as well as firing at any sheriff's deputies or other officers they saw and taking their weapons, said Capt. George Bonnett, a spokesman for the sheriff.

"Like many other cases similar to this, they fully intended to end this episode with taking their own lives," the sheriff said.

Schools start Monday in St. Tammany Parish. Schools Superintendent Trey Folse said other students at Lakeshore High School told school officials about the plan on July 17, and the officials immediately notified him and the sheriff's office.

"These kids ... were planning to carry out an incredible and devastating attack on a school. To me, the bigger story is this office worked with school authorities to make sure this didn't occur," Strain said.

Principals talk at least once a week with sheriff's office supervisors and Folse talks at least once a week with him, Strain said.

Most schools stepped up security in the aftermath of the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School near Denver, Colorado, where two students fatally shot 13 people and themselves.

The three teenage suspects were being held at a juvenile detention center on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism and more charges were possible, the sheriff said. Conviction on the conspiracy charge could keep them in detention until they turn 21, Bonnett said.

"They made no attempt to deny their involvement with the plan and admitted their intentions," police said in a news release. "All three were cooperative with investigators."

Strain said he did not know whether the students had problems at school. He said he did not know of any prior arrest record.

Because the boys are juveniles, their names have not been released by authorities. Strain said he did not know if they had attorneys.

Judging from the amount of material confiscated and the detail of the plans, Strain said, the boys apparently had been planning the attack throughout the summer. He didn't know if the targets were chosen because of something that happened last school year.

He would not say whether they already had guns or where they planned to get them, nor would he comment about a possible motive. But Bonnet said it wasn't race, because the arrested boys are of different races.

Strain also didn't know whether Day Zero might have had more than three members, adding, "But from every shred of evidence we have collected and every shred of intelligence we have been able to garner, we don't believe there were any other participants" in the alleged plot.

The boys turned themselves in this week. A bond hearing Monday will decide if they can leave the detention center.

Strain said extra deputies are always posted around schools on the first day of classes, and Monday will be "all of that and then some ... Steps most parents will readily notice, and steps that not even students will see."

He quickly added of the enhanced security, "I don't want anyone to think this will happen one day and then it will be over."

He wouldn't give details.

One of the boys is from the Mandeville area, an affluent bedroom community about 25 miles north of New Orleans where the school is located. The other two were from nearby Lacombe, a slightly less affluent and rural area.

Folse said he did not know how many students reported the threat or how worried they were. "It alerted them enough to turn it over to authorities, with trust that the people they alerted would look into it and take it seriously."

"I'm very proud of them for stepping up and doing the right thing," Folse said.

Shane Victorino Suspended 3 Games For Brawl: Phillies Outfielder Appeals

LOS ANGELES ? Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino is appealing a three-game suspension imposed for his part in a weekend brawl at San Francisco.

Major League Baseball also fined Victorino an undisclosed amount on Monday. Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco and Giants pitcher Ramon Ramirez and catcher Eli Whiteside were fined in addition.

Victorino can continue to play until the appeal process is complete. The NL East-leading Phillies open a series Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

The trouble broke out Friday night in the sixth inning after Ramirez hit Victorino in the lower back with a pitch. Victorino began walking toward the mound as the benches cleared. Victorino later pushed plate umpire Mike Muchlinski trying to get back into the fracas.

How SMS Works

SMS, or Short Message Service, is the technology powering what we often refer to as ?text messages? or ?SMSes?, in addition to what allows for information alerts on mobile phones. ?Lately SMS has ballooned to over a 50 billion dollar industry and it is quickly taking the communications world by storm.

Short Message Service actually refers to a framework that uniquely allows computer systems, or within this situation phones, to talk with each other with out the need of the central hub. ?With SMS, phones can discover one another, deliver brief packets of information back and forth, and do it all without any central computer to guide them. ?But because the system doesn?t rely upon fixed lines like a land based telephone system does, the amount of info that can be sent at one time is limited in size. ?This is dependent on the language spoken, but for English letters this typically means around 150 characters (Chinese and Japanese letters are restricted to 70).

Quite recently, however, new advancements in the technology have allowed for even longer messages to be sent. ?Long or Concatenated SMS is a development that allows numerous messages to be combined to form a single message. ?In effect, what happens is that your phone actually sends out a few smaller messages and then the receiving phone merely compiles these messages so that for users on both ends, it appears as if the message had been cohesive. While there are a few limitations, the brilliance powering SMS is that because there isn?t any need for central hubs, and thus the system can be expanded indefinitely with out any concerns of it slowing down or becoming more costly.

The most typical form of SMS is ?texting?. ?This usually takes place with a mobile phone in which individuals utilize the letters behind the number pad on their phone to spell out words and phrases after which send them out. ?Because numerous companies charge by the phrase, individuals have come up having a sort of ?texting slang? to cut down around the quantity of words required to convey a specific message. ?For instance, ?gr8? and ?BTW? mean ?great? and ?by the way?. ?In addition, other words have just been shortened, like as ?lata? to mean ?later?. ?Most customers merely pick up the lingo through regular use, and although some slang is broadly understood and used, other shortcuts are developed within circles of family and friends.

send smsThe major benefit of SMS is its price. ?The cost is usually $0.05 per message, a substantial reduce beneath that of traditional telephony and cell phone per-minute charges. ?The savings of SMS has its roots in the nature of the technology. Brief Message Service, like SIP, is modeled on the peer to peer model rather than a cog and wheel like conventional communication techniques. ?This implies that rather of having to route a message through a central hub, your text goes straight from you to its destination. ?This has radically reduce down around the price of SMS implementation and led to its overpowering popularity all through the world.

Short Message Service (SMS) has radically changed the face of the communications industry. ?While the practice is now quite common all throughout the world, it?s only recently become well-liked here in the United Stats, a growth partly predicated upon, surprisingly enough, its featured role in the show American Idol. ?The fact that ?texting? is quickly gaining both in popularity and recognition in the USA isn?t surprising however, due to its ability to offer customers a cheap, quick, and often fun method to communicate with family and friends.
