Sharpest ever Moon elevation map

The US space agency (Nasa) has released the sharpest ever elevation map of the Moon.

It will enable scientists to accurately portray the shape of the entire Moon at a higher resolution than ever before.

The map was produced using data sent back by the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft, which was launched in June 2009.

It reveals troughs and bumps over nearly the entire Moon with a pixel scale close to 100m (328 ft).

A single measure of elevation (one pixel) on the map is roughly the size of two football pitches placed side-by-side.

"Our new topographic view of the Moon provides the dataset that lunar scientists have waited for since the Apollo era," said Dr Mark Robinson, chief scientist on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), one of LRO's instruments.

Dr Robinson, from Arizona State University in Tempe, added: "We can now determine slopes of all major geologic terrains on the Moon at 100m scale, determine how the crust has deformed, better understand impact crater mechanics, investigate the nature of volcanic features, and better plan future robotic and human missions to the Moon."

Two instruments were involved in producing the map: the camera instrument (specifically the Wide Angle Camera) and the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (Lola) instrument.

The Nasa spacecraft was launched to lunar orbit carrying six instruments designed to collect detailed information about the lunar environment.

Actress suing IMDB for posting age is selfish, website says (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A 40-year-old actress who sued the Internet Movie Database for posting her real age is "selfish" and is trying to perpetuate a fraud to make potential employers believe she is younger than she is, the website says in a motion to dismiss her lawsuit.

The actress, who filed the suit last month under the name Jane Doe, is seeking $1 million from IMDb and its owner, Amazon.com. Her attorneys said in the suit that "youth is king" in Hollywood and that exposing her true age could cost her movie and TV jobs.

In a filing last week, the company fired back that the actress' attempts to hide her true age amount to fraud, because she is trying to mislead studios and audiences. Her original filing fueled a debate about ageism and privacy rights, and the aggressive response will only add to it.

"Truth and justice are philosophical pillars of this court," the motion reads. "The perpetuation of fraud, even for an actor's career, is inconsistent with these principles. Plaintiff's attempt to manipulate the federal court system so she can censor IMDb.com's display of her birth date and pretend to the world that she is not 40 years old is selfish, contrary to the public interest and a frivolous abuse of this court's resources."

The site also asked that the plaintiff's identity be revealed to help it defend itself in the lawsuit.

Such a revelation would no doubt embarrass the actress, as it would not only make her real age even more widely known -- and show that lengths she went to in an effort to conceal it.

(AP) ? A few classic drives. An impressive rout. Total control of the division.

Struggling no more, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots sent a clear message Sunday night: They're still the team to beat in the AFC East. Not the Buffalo Bills. And certainly not the New York Jets.

Brady threw three touchdown passes, including two to Rob Gronkowski, and the Patriots assumed sole possession of first place in the division with a convincing 37-16 victory over the Jets on Sunday night.

"It's very sweet," Brady said, "getting this win."

Especially after two consecutive losses had some wondering if the Patriots (6-3) were no longer the powerhouse they've been for years. Well, not so fast.

"Losing two straight, you have 14 days of just feeling crappy," Brady said. "Every day of practice is harder. It's hard to build on losses. It feels really good to win this one."

After the Jets got within a score at 23-16 early in the fourth quarter, Brady coolly led the Patriots down the field on an 84-yard drive that was capped by an 8-yard touchdown catch by Deion Branch.

New England linebacker Rob Ninkovich then sealed the victory ? which snapped a two-game skid ? on the Jets' next possession with a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the final quarter.

"One game won't win you much," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, "but it's a good win and we're certainly happy to have it."

The game was a showdown for the top spot in the division, but it was no contest as the Patriots took over sole possession by snapping the Jets' three-game winning streak and sweeping the regular-season series.

"It looks doubtful right now," Jets coach Rex Ryan said of his team's chances of winning the division. "Maybe I should guarantee we're out of it. The last time I did we made it.

"Yeah, we got no chance."

Buffalo entered the day tied with New England and New York, but the Bills were blown out by the Dallas Cowboys 44-7.

It was also the first home loss for the Jets (5-4) after opening 4-0, but they can't dwell on it because they play again at Denver on Thursday night.

"You're not going to beat many teams when you make the mistakes that we made," Ryan said. "We've been down this road before. I apologize to our fans."

Ryan insisted his team was greatly improved since a 30-21 loss at New England on Oct. 9 and declared it a must-win if New York wanted to get some home playoff games. Turns out, the Jets still have plenty of work to do if they expect to dethrone the Patriots.

"It just wasn't our night," Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said. "We earned what we got tonight."

New England was coming off consecutive losses to Pittsburgh and the Giants, but said there was no concern in its locker room. It certainly showed as the Patriots avoided their first three-game losing streak since 2002.

Brady finished 26 of 39 for 329 yards, the 40th time he reached the 300-yard mark in a regular-season game, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Joe Montana for eighth on the NFL's list. He also joined New Orleans' Drew Brees as the only players to throw for 3,000 yards in their team's first nine games. Brees also accomplished the feat this season.

Brady and Belichick broke a tie with Miami's Dan Marino and Don Shula as the winningest quarterback-coach duo since 1966 with 117 victories.

"The good teams keep getting better this time of year," Brady said. "That's what we need to do."

Gronkowski finished with eight catches for 113 yards and the two scores, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals. Andre Carter had a team-record 4? sacks as the Patriots' defense ? ranked last in the league coming in ? harassed Sanchez all night.

Sanchez was 20 of 39 for 306 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted twice and sacked five times.

LaDainian Tomlinson passed Hall of Famer Barry Sanders for fifth place on the NFL's career list for yards from scrimmage, but left the game with an injured left leg which was tightly wrapped in the locker room. He said he would have "some tests" on Monday.

The Jets appeared to get back in it when Plaxico Burress caught a 7-yard fade pass over Antwaun Molden in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, making it 23-16.

But Brady went right back to work, leading the Patriots on a typically efficient drive, going 84 yards on 13 plays using a no-huddle offense that kept the Jets' defense off balance. Mixing in some solid runs by Danny Woodhead, Brady calmly spread the ball around to his receivers before connecting with Branch with 8:04 remaining.

The score sent many in the crowd at MetLife Stadium heading for the exits. Many of those who remained didn't stick around much longer once Ninkovich returned an errant pass by Sanchez 12 yards to make it 37-16 with 7:45 left.

"Bill challenged us last week," nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. "We took his challenge and it showed tonight."

Three Jets bobbled a muffed punt by Joe McKnight to set up Gostkowski's short field goal for a 16-9 lead.

A few minutes later, Ninkovich returned a twice-tipped interception as Sanchez's throw went off the hands of running back Shonn Greene, then was deflected by linebacker Jerod Mayo to Ninkovich.

The Jets got on the scoreboard when they got some rare pressure on Brady. Jamaal Westerman got to the Patriots quarterback in the end zone, and Brady threw the ball away left-handed and was called for intentional grounding and a safety.

New York took the free kick and moved 65 yards on seven plays, and Sanchez ran in from the 2 on a quarterback draw for a 9-6 lead. But the Jets quarterback made a mistake on the play right before his score, calling a timeout with 1:24 left in the half. Ryan was so angry, he told NBC at halftime that the timeout was the "stupidest play in NFL history."

Adding to the frustration was New York not opting to try a pooch kickoff following a 15-yard penalty on New England's Wilfork, and Nick Folk kicked the ball through the end zone. Brady hit five passes on an 80-yard drive, with Gronkowski getting open over the middle for the 18-yard score with 9 seconds left in the half that made it 13-9.

NOTES: The Patriots lost CB Devin McCourty to an injured right shoulder midway through the second quarter after he collided with teammate Sterling Moore. ... Jets WR Patrick Turner had his first catch of the season, but later left with what the team called "a kidney injury." ... Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco had two catches for 65 yards, his first receptions since the last time these teams played, on Oct. 9.

ANALYSIS: GOP searches for voice in foreign policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? After years of Republicans dominating the politics of national security, this year's GOP presidential candidates are struggling to find a coherent national security argument against President Barack Obama.

In the first debate dedicated to security and foreign policy, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney took issue with Obama's plan for drawing down troops in Afghanistan but the dispute amounted to whether some forces should stay an extra few months. Texas Gov. Rick Perry called for sanctions against the Iranian central bank. Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman debated whether the World Trade Organization should investigate Chinese currency practices.

All of the candidates offered only incremental criticism of the Democrat who has racked up a string of security successes, a stark contrast to the with-us-or-against-us politics Republicans have used since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. If the debate made anything clear, it's that Republicans have lost-their go-to national security talking points, with Osama bin Laden's body somewhere in the Indian Ocean, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq drawing to a close and Obama expanding the use of unmanned spy planes to hunt terrorists.

"I don't think there's a very strong narrative," said Tony Fratto, who served as a White House and Treasury Department spokesman during the Bush administration. "Is it a significant issue for a majority of Republican voters? No. It's not."

And it's not hard to understand why.

The sluggish economy is at the top of voters' concerns and, thus, dominating the campaign conversation. National security and foreign policy issues have been all but absent from the Republican primary contest and, given that the 9 percent unemployment rate is showing no sign of significant improvement, it no doubt will shape the general election, as well.

Unlike four and eight years ago, a GOP heavily influenced by the tea party this year has found more traction criticizing Obama for spending at home and it turns to that line of attack any chance it gets.

Even Saturday during a debate, one of the lengthier exchanges was over foreign aid, which makes up about 1 percent of the federal budget but is a popular target for criticism among fiscal conservatives, particularly in the tea party movement.

"I don't believe any of them have spent much time trying to think through and understand foreign assistance," much of which involves providing weapons, training and equipment to countries that protect our interests, Fratto said.

The candidates also veered into more familiar territory, criticizing the president's health care program and spending on public broadcasting and the arts.

Flashback to 2002 and 2004 when President George W. Bush led the party.

White House political adviser Karl Rove urged Republicans to make the war on terrorism central to congressional elections, saying: "We can go to the country on this issue."

Then, Bush made security the centerpiece of his re-election campaign. Domestic issues took a backseat to all else. His nominating convention was in New York City not far from where the World Trade Center towers once stood. And Bush's team ran an advertisement against Democrat John Kerry showing a pack of wolves in the forest, with a narrator saying, "weakness attracts those who are waiting to do America harm."

In contrast, Obama is letting his actions ? and his successes ? on that front speak for itself and is focusing primarily on economic issues.

Barring a terrorist attack against the United States, Obama will go into the general election with the upper hand on an issue matrix where Republicans used to have a strong advantage.

"No matter what you criticize him on, he can say, `I got bin Laden,' `' said Marc Thiessen, a former Bush speechwriter. "In the world of 30-second sound bites, there is a very good case to be made against Obama's foreign policy, but he has a very good talking point."

"It's kind of pathetic that CBS had this debate on Saturday night between two football games," Thiessen added. "If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about how the world values a foreign policy discussion, I don't know what does."

Despite compiling a lengthy terrorist body count, Obama still has not laid out a clear policy on detention, interrogation and how the government will prosecute terrorists. The prison in Guantanamo Bay will remain open and there's no indication that there will be a plan for dealing with the prisoners, many of whom have been cleared for release since the Bush administration.

Part of the challenge for Republicans is that the president has an advantage on national security issues by virtue of his daily interaction with world leaders and his access to the nation's most sensitive intelligence. During the 2004 presidential debate, when Kerry criticized Bush's collaboration with other world leaders, Bush countered, portraying Kerry as an armchair quarterback.

"I know how these people think," Bush said. "I deal with them all the time. I sit down with the world leaders frequently and talk to them on the phone frequently."

Today, that advantage goes to Obama.

At the same time, the GOP field ? made up primarily of current and former governors ? starts from a position of disadvantage, collectively having little foreign policy experience.

Voters also have grown tired of the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, making it harder for any other foreign policy message to resonate.

"It's really reflective of where the voters are more than anything else," said Fratto.

Still, in the end, whoever is president in 2013 will face a number of foreign policy challenges, such as how to respond to Chinese cyber attacks and how to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons ? issues that were touched on only briefly Saturday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The first Academy Awards of the season will be presented Saturday night, capping a tumultuous week that saw the abrupt departure and rapid replacement of the Oscar show producer and host.

James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will receive honorary Oscars for their long film careers, and Oprah Winfrey will accept the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' third annual Governors Awards.

Presentation of the honorary Oscars at a black-tie dinner at the Kodak Theatre complex, where the Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26, follows this week's replacement of Oscar show producer Brett Ratner and host Eddie Murphy with Hollywood veterans Brian Grazer and Billy Crystal.

Winfrey's Hersholt award honors her philanthropic and humanitarian contributions, including her own namesake foundations and Academy for Girls in South Africa. The 57-year-old media mogul was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for 1985's "The Color Purple."

Jones and Smith will receive honorary Oscars for their outstanding careers.

Jones, 80, has worked in more than 50 films, including the voice of Darth Vader, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1971 for "The Great White Hope." His other credits include "Field of Dreams," ''Patriot Games" and "The Hunt for Red October."

Smith was NBC's first makeup man when he started his career in 1945. He won an Oscar in 1984 for his work on "Amadeus" and was nominated again in 1989 for "Dad." Known as the "godfather of makeup," he also worked on "The Godfather," ''The Exorcist" and "Taxi Driver." Smith also helped train many of today's top movie makeup artists.

The film academy launched its Governors Awards three years ago to pay tribute to winners of honorary Oscars ? prizes previously presented during the Academy Awards telecast. Governors from its 15 branches chose Saturday's winners.

Highlights from the untelevised event will be available online at Oscars.org and included in the Academy Awards telecast in February.

Magazine's 1st MAD men get a rare reunion

Think of them as the senior class of the "usual gang of idiots." Or the original MAD men perhaps.

There's Al Jaffee, who at 90 still draws the optical illusion fold-in gags for MAD magazine's back page. And Sergio Aragones, still whipping out eye-straining and gut-busting miniature cartoons in the magazine's margins after 48 years. And Jack Davis, who was there at the beginning, drawing the horror spoof "Hoohah!" that appeared in MAD's debut issue in 1952.

They're among the cartoonists who put MAD on the map in the 1950s. Over the next six decades, they blended celebrity caricature, pop-culture parody and political satire in a way that would influence American comedy from Saturday Night Live to The Onion and more. And some of them are still churning out gags for MAD, in defiance of the ever-expanding generation gap with the magazine's young audience.

"I have kids come to me at conventions saying, 'My grandfather grew up with your work,'" said Aragones, 74, whose recent features include "A MAD Look at Lady Gaga." "Older people think the older MADs were funnier. But not really. You grew up. Your sense of humor has changed."

Aragones, Jaffee and Davis were among eight veteran MAD contributors gathering Saturday for a rare reunion on the Georgia coast. With their homes and studios spread across the U.S., the artists who put their work side by side in hundreds of MAD issues don't often meet face to face.

This weekend, the cartoonists are being honored and humored by their hosts, the Savannah College of Art and Design and the National Cartoonists Society. Their art is hanging in a gallery, while their schedule includes workshops with the college's art students and a panel discussion on MAD's history and their work.

John Lowe, the Savannah art college's dean of communication arts, said the MAD reunion represents "roughly 400 years' worth of comic book experience collected in one place."

"MAD, to me, was really the first print publication to satire popular culture and American political culture," said Lowe, 44. "It is still very edgy. I can see parents wanting to keep it out of the hands of their children. And children wanting to get it in their hands."

Launched in 1952 by comics publisher William M. Gaines and editor-writer Harvey Kurtzman, MAD evolved from stories spoofing its owners' stable of horror comics to a broader range of send-ups lampooning American culture, celebrities and politics. By 1956 the magazine had a gap-toothed mascot, Alfred E. Newman, who soon became a cartoon icon.

    5. First Read: Wide open road for Romney
    6. 11-11-11 spiritualists denied entry to Egypt's Great Pyramid
    7. How your car could testify against you

The artists worked on a freelance basis, but Gaines rewarded their loyalty with annual group trips overseas for decades, beginning with a trip to Haiti in 1960. Davis recalled being cajoled by Aragones into fighting a bull ? a very young one without horns, he admits ? in Spain. Jaffee still laughs at how a MAD writer, during a tour of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, shattered the hushed reverence by remarking aloud that Michelangelo's painted ceiling was so priceless that God couldn't afford the rent.

MAD's stable of artists and writers embraced the group moniker "the usual gang of idiots." Now published by DC Comics, MAD similarly downplays its own influence. On its website, MAD touts its success as "the best-selling magazine in the world with that title."

Jaffee, who first contributed in 1955, recalls how Time magazine initially dubbed MAD a "short-lived fad."

"They didn't think this crappy little magazine would last this long," Jaffee said from New York. "However, I think MAD is challenging Time for longevity."

And perhaps, in an offbeat way, challenging Time in stature?

Jaffee's MAD fold-ins ? which have jabbed at everything from the Beatles and the Vietnam War to TMZ and "The Jersey Shore" ? recently received the kind of star treatment normally reserved for major literary works. In September, Jaffee's entire 36-year run of some 400 fold-ins was collected in a hefty, $125 set of four hardbound books, a package he called "hernia-inducing."

While Jaffee and Aragones still work to keep pace with MAD's younger audience. Davis, 86, chose to end his more than half-century affiliation with the magazine more than two years ago.

"I'm an old stodgy man and pretty conservative," Davis said. "I like all the guys up there a lot, but I felt like it kind of got a little raunchy."

For those who remain, Aragones says, decades at the drawing board honing the razor edge of humor has kept the cartoonists feeling young ? an energetically meeting deadlines.

Known as "the world's fastest cartoonist," Aragones reckons he's drawn 12,000 cartoons for the margins of MAD magazine since 1963. When he travels to Savannah, Aragones said, the deadlines won't stop as he writes on the flight from Los Angeles and draws at his hotel.

"It's not stressful," Aragones said. "Being a cartoonist is taking out all your frustrations on paper. You don't have to get road rage. You just draw a cartoon."

Veterans Day 2011: LGBT Veterans And Families Honored After 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal (VIDEO)

This year's Veterans Day was a special one for many -- marking the first time the national holiday was observed since the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy went into effect in September.

As CNN is reporting, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) veterans were honored across the country with heartfelt tributes. Among those paying tribute to vets was New York's LGBT Community Center, which co-sponsored a reception for U.S. service members, their partners and their families to "highlight the journey traveled by our community, which led to the eventual and groundbreaking repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell," according to a statement.

"It's been almost two decades since these service members have had to hide who they were," executive director Glennda Testone told CNN. "Thankfully, those days are over." Veteran Antonio Breton felt similarly, telling NY1: "It was very hectic because I myself had to keep quiet. I had my own personal demons. I'm also a recovering alcoholic, and that was also probably part of the reason why I had to keep my mouth shut. Because during my recovery, I almost let it slip, and I could have been thrown out of the military right then and there."

Iraq war veteran Dan Choi, who was discharged from the Army for acknowledging that he is gay but now plans to re-enlist, was also vocal about the holiday on Twitter:

Dan Choi

One day we'll have a gay veterans monument here, memorializing our sacrifice for America, our fight for equality, and our battle for love.

LGBT service members based in San Diego, where, for the first time, openly gay and lesbian service members would be able to march proudly in the city's annual Veteran's Day parade, expressed similar sentiments. "I never thought in my lifetime, I would participate in [the parade] as an openly gay veteran and selected as a Grand Marshall," Evelyn Thomas, U.S. Marine Corps and National Guard veteran, is quoted by San Diego Gay & Lesbian News as saying.

Dad charged after infant son chokes on baby wipe (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? A Cleveland man was arraigned on child endangerment charges on Saturday after emergency room doctors had to surgically remove a diaper wipe from the throat of his choking eight-week-old son.

Joshua Rains, 25, was arrested Wednesday at the MetroHealth Medical Center after investigators interviewed him about the circumstances surrounding his son's injuries, Cleveland Police Sgt. Joseph Rini told Reuters.

The child was rushed to MetroHealth on Monday with a baby wipe lodged in his throat, blocking his airway.

According to the police report "the father stated while changing the child's diaper he wiped the child's mouth with the baby wipe, and then he noticed the baby wipe had disappeared."

Once he noticed the baby swallowed the wipe he tried to pull it out, "but only jammed it further down the child's throat."

But police said the claim was inconsistent with the baby's injuries.

"He is admitting to putting the wipe in the child's mouth," Sgt. Rini said on Saturday. "Whether it was an accident or done intentionally is what needs to be investigated."

Sgt. Rini also confirmed the infant had previously been hospitalized. At just five-days-old the baby was treated for a detached eye lens, but the incident was not reported, according to the police report.

Rains was arraigned on Saturday on one count of felony endangering children, according to court records. There is no word on the baby's condition from the hospital.

The police report stated the infant was on life support, though on Saturday, the baby's condition was unknown.
